Before it. Hence my concerns about it not being an X
related problem at all.

Its not a server :) Its a machine for high end
graphics rendering and stuff - So X is a requirement.
Plus, as mentioned above.. the "Welcome" part doesn't
turn up either..

Hi,

Just a passing thought.. do the "slanting lines" come after it
says "Welcome to PCQLinux" or before it??

If its before the Welcome line. then init seems to be facing a problem..

Hi

Since your installation went fine, all you want
to do is boot with a floppy or CD and change
initdefault in /etc/inittab to 3 and then fix your X
if you need graphics. Usually, servers don't need any
graphics anyway.

[ilugd] FC3 (PCQLinux) boot problem, >1GB RAM

2005-03-16 Thread Viksit Gaur
Hello all,

After having installed PCQLinux on a machine with 4GB
of RAM, and a SCSI hdd, I'm having trouble booting.
The Kernel starts off well enough, and init seems to
come up - but as soon as that happens, all i see is a
bunch of slanting lines on a black background.

After checking it out on the internet, I came to the
conclusion that the problems may lie in one of the
following areas (*Possibly):

1)ACPI - I tried passing acpi=off without any results
2)SCSI issues - i tried hda=ide-scsi without any
results
3)The possiblity of a Direct Memory Access problem
which Linux seems to face with more than 1GB of memory
(Why/How does this happen?).

There was something mentioned about CONFIG_HIGHMEM on
a bunch of forums, but I'm assuming thats somewhere in
the X config - device drivers section? Or is it
something to do with other kernel parameters to be set
from somewhere else?

TIA,
Cheers!
