AFAIK on the laptops under question the switch was Fn+F4 key
combination but this works for Compaq V2000 model (and other
Presarios) but not on V3000.

My F5 key has a rectangle, depicting a monitor, drawn on it. Pressing
Fn+F5 switches the display from TFT to external monitor. Do you have
any such key? This works without i855crt.

No the port is there but external monitor switching does not work. In
earlier laptops this would work right from BIOS display onwards.

Will check link and report back.

Are you saying that the laptop does not have the hardware port to
connect to an external monitor?

Maybe you can try http://sourceforge.net/projects/i855crt

Karan, the problem is that they do not offer to load FreeDos/MsDos
(whatever) on all models. Only specific models have them. I am just
about getting ready to sue HP IAC since the last laptop brought with
freedos refuses to give feed to external mointor. The V3000 series of
laptop based on Intel Express chipset can only do this vis an OS
driver and guess what? Only win has such a driver!!

not sure about how this works in India ( shame on me ! ) but here in the
UK, the MS club/ bsa managed to get a fairly potent legal regime in
place where requires all h/w vendors to ship an assembled machine _with_
an OS.

FreeDos is an OS, and Dell + HP are in most cases, quite happy to ship
most server / custom workstation equipment with FreeDOS. Laptops, since
they are more of a commodity, tend to not have that option though.

Would this work here?
http://www.itworld.com/Comp/1214/061215frenchhp/

Every time we buy a laptop (and I am again going to buy one soon) I
find that most of the offerings comes with WIndows bundled and we also
end up paying for something we do not want.
