Quoting a reply I got on the Debian Users Mailing List:

--- BEGIN ---
You need the FreeType perl module. Go to http://packages.debian.org,
use the search form at the bottom of the page, and enter "Freetype.pm".
The result will tell you which package to install.

After installing the package you need to rerun defoma-hints (redirect
the output to your hints file in /etc/defoma/hints). Check the
resulting file. If everything looks okay, run defoma-reconfigure to
apply the new configuration file.

just do a
 apt-get install ttf-indic-fonts
or for only hindi fonts just
 apt-get install ttf-devanagari-fonts

for anyother fonts , copy under /usr/share/fonts for systemwide usage
or ~/.fonts for local usage.

Won't i have to issue a ttmkdir (or something similar) command after
copying the fonts to /usr/share/fonts?

suppose you just copied the fonts to /usr/share/fonts or whatever the
debian equivalent is?

Hmm...

How come all the fonts installed on my system appear as symlinks in
/var/lib/defoma/fontconfig.d ?

Btw - if you feel Defoma is not the correct way, do you know any
other way to install fonts 'system-wide'?

I wonder why that is.

http://packages.debian.org/unstable/admin/defoma says:

«Defoma, which stands for DEbian FOnt MAnager, provides a framework
for automatic font configuration. An application whose configuration
of fonts usually requires manual intervention can automate the
process through Defoma, by installing a Defoma-configuration script.
The script gets called whenever a font is installed and removed, so
that the script may update the application configuration.»

In short, that doesn't sound *AT ALL* like what you should be using to
install a TrueType font.

Perhaps you should follow the instructions on the web page instead.

No idea, but it belongs to the Font::FreeType Perl module, which you can
get from the CPAN.

> And, why should this file suddenly disappear?

No idea.

It seems somewhat strange to need Font::FreeType to install a TTF, but I
can't begin to guess how Debian does it. I've always just used mkfontdir
(or ttmkfdir or something).

Say, did you know that the first result on Google for "XFree86 TrueType
fonts" is a page titled "TrueType Fonts on Debian XFree86 4.x Systems"?

I had installed the msttcorefonts package which is a collection of
truetype fonts. All of them have installed correctly, apparently
without FreeType.pm

[ilugd] Help with Defoma (Installing Hindi fonts in Debian)

2005-09-20 Thread Saurabh Nanda
Hi,

I've downloaded Akshar.ttf (unicode hindi font) and want to install it
'system-wide', i.e. all applications installed on the system should be
able to use it.

I tried using 'defoma' (DEbian FOnt MAnager) to install the font, but
have not been successful. Here's what I did:

# mkdir /usr/share/fonts/truetype/indian
# cp Akshar.ttf /usr/share/fonts/truetype/indian
# defoma-font register truetype Akshar.ttf

Then I looked in /var/lib/defoma/fontconfig.d/A but the symlink for
Akshar.ttf was not there.

I read through the manpage of defoma-font and figured out that a 'font
hint' was required. This is what I did:

#defoma-hints truetype Akshar.ttf
Wait for second...
defoma-hints Can't locate FreeType.pm in @INC (@INC contains:
/etc/perl /usr/local/lib/perl/5.8.4 /usr/local/share/perl/5.8.4
/usr/lib/perl5 /usr/share/perl5 /usr/lib/perl/5.8 /usr/share/perl/5.8
/usr/local/lib/site_perl .) at (eval 3) line 2.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] tmp]$locate FreeType.pm

Can anyone help me out?
