Interesting... let me check...

Right you are, sko...@skoost.com was subscribed, probably when the
mailing list had to be resurrected from its ashes. Unsubscribed as we
speak.

And thanks for the implicit list admin pester. If enough people make a
noise things happen, otherwise it's too easy to let them slide. Not
that list admin is my job anyway!

The original headers (esp. the 'Sender' header) of the original email are
wiped-off/replaced by mailman, so I'm not sure, but to be able to post to a
member-only GNU Mailman managed list, the address listed in the 'Sender'
header OR 'From' header must be the member of the list.

I would have expected very amusing emails to wind up on the mailing
list in that case.

Hadn't noticed the sender's address in this case. It is curious. The
ones I had examined earlier had the email id of the 'victim' as the
sender.

The frequency and variation of these invites (esp. from well-known
sites like linkedin) suggests that that's not what this is. Much more
likely is people who've added people to their addressbooks with the
mailing list address as contact info.

I'm actually genuinely interested in understanding how this works. How
do the invites get through to the mailing list? Are all the sender
addresses (sko...@skoost.com in this case) subscribed?

I do not know about this site, but I suspect that more often than not,
it comes under 'social engineering'.

A 'social networking' site has it easy if the password used for
registering is the same as the one used for the mail account!

Hence, 'feeblemindedness' is a bit too strong. A friend, who is quite
well known in IT and Computer Engineering fell victim to such an error
a couple of year ago.
