Hi Dudes and Dudettes,

Had a fruitful meeting with the volunteer and speaker crowd for LA2005
as well as Alolita and Bob, organisers of LA2005. We should be able
to put up a rather nice show, so do turn up.

Please register yourself at the LA2005 web site if you wish to visit
any part of the Expo (on any of the 3 days of the event) or attend the
free ILUG-Delhi talks (on the 11th). The URL is:

  http://linuxasia2005.com/attendee/expo_pass.php

Registration for the Expo and ILUG-Delhi talks is completely free.

Of course, you can also register yourself as a delegate to the
conference and attend the mainstream talk sessions, and for the
workshops. The URL for registration is:

  http://linuxasia2005.com/attendee/reg_att_c.php

Look forward to seeing you there.

[ilugd] Linux Asia 2005 - Call For Volunteers

2005-01-26 Thread Raj Mathur
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

If you read my previous message you'd have noted that we have nearly
20 volunteers at the moment. However, that is really not enough.

So if you enjoy working hard, getting no thanks, and mingling with
like-minded people, please volunteer to help out at the ILUG-Delhi
stall at LA2005.

What you have to do:

1. Send a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] stating that you're
volunteering for LA2005. Please do give your full name and contact
information.

2. Attend the 2 pre-event meetings. They will probably be on 6th and
8th of February. 8th February would be at the venue (IHC) itself.

3. Be prepared for jumping like a frog from one task to the other.
Organising and setting up a stall is no trivial matter, and if you're
willing to take responsibility, don't say so -- you will get all the
responsibility you could handle! :)

4. If you have special interest in helping out in one of the demos
(listed in my previous message), please state that up front.

5. You may be asked to do all sorts of tasks, from going and getting
samosas for people at a swamped stall to demonstrating an application
to the President of India to lugging equipment between the car and the
stall. Can you cope? Are you flexible?

6. Your meals and, if necessary, your transport will be provided for
by LA and the LUG. Try to fix up with other volunteers in your area
and organise a carpool if you can.

7. At the end you get a T-shirt (if you're lucky!), a group photo and
the satisfaction of a job well done.

You can also volunteer for one or two days if you can't make it for
all three. Remember, the event is from February 9 to 11.

[ilugd] Linux Asia 2005: Call for Equipment

Hi,

We desperately need computers and 17 monitors for our stall at Linux
Asia 2005. If you can spare your computer and/or your monitor for 4
days please let [EMAIL PROTECTED] know immediately.

It would be ideal if you can allow your hard disk to be erased.
However if that is a problem, we can leave your disk as it is and
jugaadofy a netboot on your system.

Your equipment will be needed from February 8th to 11th.

[ilugd] Linux Asia 2005

2005-01-13 Thread Raj Mathur
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

As time grows short, we finally move our dragging feet and decide we
ought to do something about Linux Asia 2005 (LA2005). What do we
have? What can we do?

What is it
- --

The Linux Asia conference, February 9 to 11, 2005.
http://linuxasia2005.com/

What do we have
- ---

We are getting the following from the organisers:

- - A stall at a decent place (not tucked away in the back like last
time) with enough space.

- - A hall on the last day for holding our own talk sessions.

What can we do
- --

This is tentative and subject to change...

First of all, we must make the stall a success just like last time.
If you have an idea and equipment for a running demo, please speak
now. State exactly what additional equipment (down to the last 3-pin
5-amp socket) you will need. Rope in at least one more friend to help
you run the demo. Prepare a spiel for attracting visitors. Make sure
the demo doesn't use any proprietary software. Specify what you will
need on placards above your demo station. And do the demo!

Apart from the demos we will have, like last time, CD sales. Mary has
kindly volunteered to get CDs burnt and printed in advance, let's make
up a list of the CDs that sell well along with quantities.

We are also planning to have t-shirts printed for the event.
Volunteers MAY get one free on the last day. Others are for sale @
Rs. 250 or so each.

We need at least 3 people to handle billing -- making receipts and
storing the cash. Hey, we're almost a society now, better get
organised some time or the other!

Apart from that we can have 4-5 talks on the last day. I strongly
feel that at least one should be about software patents, the burning
issue of the day. Others are yet to be decided, though one little
birdie in South India is trying very hard to book a slot -- you know
who you are :)

LA2005 has also asked us to provide us with volunteers for their help
desk, who would answer basic inquiries on Linux from visitors and
redirect them to the ILUGD stall for complex queries. Volunteers for
the help desk will be. uh, ``volunteered'' from the stall volunteers.

What you can do
- ---

If you can spend 3 or even 2 days at the stall please sign up as a
volunteer. As before, being a volunteer means the following:

- - Hard work
- - Being screamed at
- - Carrot of a free t-shirt which you never get
- - Interacting with all sorts of people
- - Another carrot of being able to get into talks for free, which also
  never happens
- - Meeting with all the members of the LUG
- - Hanging around with luminaries of the FLOSS world
- - A third carrot of joining up for the post-event booze and dinners,
  which you never...
- - Another carrot of free connectivity to download tons of software
- - Loads of fun

If you have a talk or presentation please polish it up and prepare to
give it at the last day. At least 2 talks will be kept as backup, so
please don't be upset if you're called at the last minute to give a
talk. You MUST make the slides of the talk available by February 1.

If you have a demo idea, sit down and work it out in detail. Then
make a list of:

- - Equipment you will need
- - Connectivity you will need
- - Equipment you have
- - The objective of the demo
- - The target audience
- - The length of each complete demo

The mailing list for posting specific demo, volunteer and presentation
stuff to is:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED] (anyone can subscribe)

Suggestions, flames, etc should be posted to this list.

Let's meet up on Sunday if that suits everyone, or 90% of everyone and
thrash things out in detail. Venue can be decided later today
(Friday) -- Munirka if no other place.
