Now connect the mouse and run "redhat-config-mouse" to configure. It is possible that during installation anaconda in unable to detect the correct mouse type. You still > unconvinced? :-) > > Cheers! > viksit > that set me thinking. anyone has figures/pointers, to what could be the population of gnulinux users in the world? my working definition of a gnulinux user: 1) end-user desktop user, whether at runlevel 3 or runlevel 5, 2) whether with gnulinux installed on local hardisk or via diskless terminals, 3) whether with root access or just an account which is used for 'mainstream personal computing (email, surfing, wordprocessing, etc)' or even if for a repetitive job like transaction-entry such as at a bpo. 4) whether an active user or an occassional user who boots into and uses gnulinux atleast once a month for a minimum of 15 minutes. this whether on a dual-boot or even a live cd. 5) does not include 'users' who would use gnulinux running on an atm as they don't have a uid. 6) would include users who surf the internet using gnulinux at a cybercafe. maybe they are logged in as guest, or the cyber-owner gives them an account, but they are using the browser and possibly other applications on a gnulinux pc, hence they count in my perception. 7) does not include endusers of embedded devices such as consumer electronics, onboard entertainment video such as on planes, as gnulinux is perhaps invisible to them, or they do not even know that this is running on it. 8) would include endusers of embedded devices such as cellphones and pdas, as they have to directly interact and know how to use gnulinux. 9) would include users who run gnulinux over another os, through emulation software-layers such as softPC. [the linux kernel is being used] 10) if gnulinux is used on a server, which is accessed by windows-endusers transparantly, these endusers are not counted. 11) any language interface would do. so we can count those millions of users sun microsystems are inculcating in china 12) any desktop gnulinux distro, whether community-versions or commercial. [linux kernel is being used by an end-user] whew! what a task to define a gnulinux end-user. strange no one ever asks that question for a windows or a mac user. shows the complexity and flexibility of gnulinux. if you wish, you could improve my working definition of a gnulinux user. however, please try to keep it to the spirit and focus of what i have in mind. what do you think are the numbers of such users? worldwide? in india? fyi, we have about 10 million pcs in india. i forget how many pcs we have in the world. :-) LL ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/
Re: [ilugd] Mouse problem during installation of redhat
Greetings, > I was installing redhat 9.0 Why? :-) Contact the LUG's CD list, and get yourself a copy of the latest version of Fedora, which is the latest in the redhat series of distributions. It solves a lot of hardware issues such as the one you seem to be having. Alternatively, buy this month's PCQuest magazine - it has Fedora Core 3 (PCQLinux) on it, which IMHO is a pretty decent distro to install. > The screen is full of text and last line reads like > 'ehci-hcd ' also USB was > written in the last line. Yes, it looks like you're having some kind of an issue with the USB module and your mouse. Which mouse is it? You might want to install the system using your PS/2 mouse, and once the system is installed, attach your USB mouse and then approach the list - you have quite a lot of options once you have linux installed on your hard disk. > installing Linux is a risk to Hard Disk , is it > true ... The system already has Windows XP and Win 98 > installed.. Lol, Linux is definitely less of a risk when compared to the other two extremely virus prone OSs which you have installed! Seriously, Linux is run by more than a million people world wide for applications ranging from Rocket launches to making simulations for nuclear devices - no one uses windows there. [ilugd] Mouse problem during installation of redhat
Hi Friends, I was installing redhat 9.0 into one of mine system but during installation the system hangs(about 5 secs after i click enter from the installation menu). The screen is full of text and last line reads like 'ehci-hcd ' also USB was written in the last line. I then tried to rerun the instalation after removing the mouse (which is in USB port). The installation runs successfully then. But i aborted the installation as i does not want to run the system without mouse. Please friends guide me how to install the Linux on the system . I have installed the Linux from the same CD to another PC but with PS/2 mouse and intel PIII. Also i have another question one of mine friends once said to me that installing Linux is a risk to Hard Disk , is it true.(However i did not believed him). I am running the system with the following configuration: 1)AMD 2800 processor. (Does redhat 9.0 supports AMD) 2)RAM 512 MB 3)LG monitor 4)The system already has Windows XP and Win 98 installed. etc. Thanks for your time and effort. -- Regards Abhishek Jain -- Think Big and Play safe ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/
