Sir, tried all the three options but it did not work. At last tried single and
it worked. Anyway thanks a lot for providing your valuable support.

2008-08-19 Thread MALKIAT BENIPAL
Dear Mani,

As per your solution provided through the link, please guide where to add the
line as rw init=/bin/sh in the kernal line

this is the kernal line :
KERNEL /VMLINUZ-2.4.18-14 RO ROOT=LABEL=/

Tried it but after pressing b (booting) coming across error as kernel panic, so
not able to boot as super user mode.
Thanks

Hey,

Its not at all a problem if u loose a password. U cant retrieve it ..thats
for sure because its encrypted by a Trap-Door Algorithm which is one-way
encryption. but u can always change it.
Wat u can do is ..in ur grub menu while booting .before u boot into linux
press 'e'. to edit the menu. In the boot sequence first line u append
init=/bin/sh
then u boot.! after u r in , u get a prompt like sh#
there u write
# mount -o remount -n /
u then give the passwd command..like
# passwd
simply change ur password by giving new one.

Another trick is ..!
when u get sh# prompt ..simply in next prompt do # vim /etc/passwd
n from the first line ...erase the 'x' beside root.! ur root is passwrodless
now..!

Dear fellow,
After defining 'single' at the last of kernal line, coming across kernal panic
error. Pl  guide what could be the problem...? thanks

MALKIAT

At grub prompt hit e on your keyboard, highlight and edit the line
that starts with kernel. and at the end append the word single

Now boot and you will be in root prompt. Change password.

boot ur system through the super user mode using the bootable Cd you can
find the info using googling. You can reset ur password for the super user
using it .

You dont need a reinstall.

You should append 1 to the end of your kernel boot line in the grub
menu. 1 is single user mode (run level 1 ) and will boot you directly
into a root shell. You can then use passwd to change your password. Then
reboot or type init 5 and you system should come fully up.
