Re: [ilugd] PlayFair: what's happening

2004-04-27 Thread linuxlingam
hey! the playfair controversy refuses to blow away. a heck lot is
happening even as you read this email.

there's something called the FSF-WG (the free software foundation:
working group) this discussion is most active there, with responses from
richard stallman (founder, fsf), eben moglen (professor of law, columbia
university), george kurien (indian law expert) and lots more. also heard
that deeproot linux has decided to host it on their site. yesterday the
author of DeDRM that 'opens' playfair published the code freely on the
net, and meanwhile, a lot of international press has been fed regular
updates on this.

what is mentioned here is the tip of the iceberg. lots more happeing.

:-)

[ilugd] PlayFair: what's happening

Hi,

A quick update for those of you who're following the PlayFair case,
where Apple threatened Sarovar.org with legal consequences unless they
removed the PlayFair package from their servers:

There are a number of loosely-coordinated efforts on to evaluate
Apple's threat and see whether it's legal in the context of Indian
law. It's premature to judge one way or the other, but a number of
lawyers seem to feel that Apple is well within its rights and will win
the case if it comes to court. On the other hand, a number of experts
also seem to agree that Apple has overstepped the bounds of what they
are permitted to do under law, and if we're lucky they (Apple) may
even be in line for damages.

In the meantime M P Anand Babu (whom you may remember from his
ILUG-Delhi days) has taken over as the official project maintainer for
PlayFair. He's looking for hosting space in India, so if you know a
free software-friendly ISP who offers server colocation, please
contact AB directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED].

Rajkumar S has written a position paper on the PlayFair issue, which
he and I subsequently worked on together to complete. We're passing
that to journalists who have queries about the PlayFair case. The
paper is available at http://kandalaya.org/playfair.txt . Please go
ahead and use it if you wish to educate anyone about the basic issues
involved in this case. We'd appreciate it if you send any changes you
make back to us for inclusion in future versions of the document.

If you wish to offer any kind of support (legal, technical, financial)
the right person to contact would be Anand Babu.

Regards,
