Re: [ilugd] Solaris .. Few Questions
Solaris 10 is free like JDK. OpenSolaris is free like GNU/Linux. Both can be downloaded free of charge from sun website. Works on the all architectures which linux runs on -- x86, x86_64 (plus solaris does not have different builds for x86 and x64 - its a BSD derived kernel and switches automatically), Sun's SPARC platform, and now even ARM (netbooks, storage devices, etc.) It requires substantially more RAM to run than linux (768 MB minimum instead of 256 MB) - this is for Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris, but there are lighter distros which run even on 64 megs. Driver support is much scarce as compared to linux ofcourse and you'll have to look around. Display is (mostly) taken care of with Nvidia, sound with OSS, there's support for almost all ethernet and WiFi as well. Stuff like working with printers, projectors, digital cameras, scanners, mp3 players, etc isn't as polished as linux yet. No bluetooth support either. It's meant for servers, unless you're a geek ofcourse ;) -Angad ___ ilugd mailinglist -- ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd Archives at: http://news.gmane.org/gmane.user-groups.linux.delhi http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/

It's meant for servers, unless you're a geek ofcourse ;) Kindly dont make such statements. Normally Windoze guys have a habit of using this sentence just to sideline GNU/Linux. Re: [ilugd] Solaris .. Few Questions
Hmm, my intention was not to sideline Solaris. I have more experience with Solaris than Linux per se (and even my day job involves solaris engineering) but I just think that this classification is true looking at the current scenario. You are most welcome to continue the discussion on a previous thread I had once created on this very topic: http://www.mail-archive.com/ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org/msg25510.html -Angad On Fri, Oct 16, 2009 at 6:33 PM, Mohit Singh gmohitsi...@gmail.com wrote: It's meant for servers, unless you're a geek ofcourse ;) Kindly dont make such statements.
