[ilugd] Summer Of Code - Six Months On

2006-03-20 Thread Raj Shekhar
The blog post is specific to Mozilla related projects only
http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/gerv/archives/2006/03/summer_of_code_six_months_on.html

Executive summary

None of the ten projects shows any sign whatsoever of work having
continued after the SoC deadline. Not one. No development-related
mailing list traffic, no releases, nothing. It's as if the people
vanished off the face of the earth on September 2nd.

Will the mentorship program being planned by ILUGD be worth the sweat of
the people planning it?

That is always a risk one takes. However, the ILUG-D mentorship program
is significantly different in that while projects originating from both
students and mentors will be taken up, I envisage is as being largely
mentor-driven, at least in the beginning. In that case, the project
would presumably be something that the mentor is interested in keeping
alive.
Looking at the blog, the one project that I could immediately
evaluate was the Hindi one, where, as with the other localisation
projects, the claim was that these were not integrated with ongoing
translation efforts. I feel that is a serious shortcoming in the
planning of the project.

Regards,
Gora
