I'm sure you need a decent graphics card to watch even regular/VHS videos.

I assumed this is available in all laptops, do you mean it is not ?

Extra features: Webcam, Bluetooth, microphone should work with Ubuntu,
  good
  speakers with loud enough sound.

Try building bootable USB/Memstick image from an Ubuntu (better
LinuxMint ISO) and keep it in your pocket while you go for a final deal.
Boot off of this the machine you want to buy, see if all the things work
as per your expectations. Hope that helps.

Sounds like common sense, but honestly this did not occur to me. Thank you
very much.
If LinuxMint works perfectly fine, will Ubuntu 11.10 or 12.04 too work for
me ?

Thanks Raj,
Actually for this even I am not sure what I am looking for.
For development purpose, I use my office environment. In case I want to
write small shell scripts or C programs (using gcc), is it possible on an
Android tablet ?
Don't have much idea of Android.

[ilugd] looking for laptop for Ubuntu (Rs. 25K)

2012-03-20 Thread Vikas Upadhyay
Hello All,

I am planning to buy a laptop for my general usage (no gaming).

Usage: Internet browsing, reading documents, creating documents, watching
movies, listening music etc.

Some bit of programming (on Linux, of course)

OS : Ubuntu (11.10 or 12.04) and Windows, dual boot (if Windows not
available, perfectly fine).

Screen Size: Prefer 15” but, if it costs lesser to own 14, I can think of
that.

Budget: Around Rs. 25,000 (The lower the better). Saw Raj's response to one
email mentioning HP costing around Rs. 34,000. I am just looking for around
Rs. 10,000 cheaper.

RAM/Processor/Graphics card: Will not be playing any graphic intensive
game, just want a decent to good performance (don’t want to pay extra for
“awesome” graphics). Intel i3 with 2GB RAM is what I am thinking about,
and am not averse to AMD.

Extra features: Webcam, Bluetooth, microphone should work with Ubuntu, good
speakers with loud enough sound.

Not sure, can individual parts being not costly (repair/upgrade) be a
criterion for buying one ?

I have no brand preference, looking for value for money. Just want Ubuntu
and hardware liking each other. Do not want it to be outdated for at least
another 5-6 years (possible :) ?).

My current laptop gets heated at around the touch pad, so don't want new
one to become hot over a period of use.

Another thought, can an Android tablet (costing not more than Rs 20K),
replace a laptop which serves above mentioned requirement? If yes, any
suggestion ?

Thanks in advance.

Regards
