You should try to find a copy of the appropriate Apple Service Manual
for your particular iMac G4 model. Or go here for pointers:

Several critical points to remember:
Get some T-10 and T-15 tools, and an inch-pound torque wrench. You'll
need them to remove fasteners and to retorque the four screws that
hold the bottom case to the top case to 17 inch-pounds. Failure to
properly torque these screws will lead to overheating and damage to
the logic board.

Also, get some thermal paste to renew the thermal coupling. The
original factory thermal pad material can be removed and replaced with
paste.

You might as well replace the 1/2 AA PRAM battery while you're in there.

You'll find that the user-accessible RAM is PC 133 SO-DIMM while the
RAM in the slot on top of the logic board is PC 133 168-pin SDRAM.

Good luck!

Opening up a G4 iMac

2009-01-18 Thread Stephen Dickinson

Hi all,

So my G4 iMac needs a new optical drive and I'm going to stick some
more RAM in the factory slot while I'm in there, but I'm a little
gunshy because this is the most ambitious hardware project I've ever
taken on. Are there any potential pitfalls I should know about before
I begin?

Thanks,
- Stephen
