Wilton Shaw wrote: Hello, I have two firewall ports on my eMac , which I use for two external backup drives. I'd like to add a third drive. Is there any way to do this cheaply? Thanks for any help past and present. That would be FireWIRE. A firewall is there but it is something else. Check your external drives, most fullsize (not laptop) drives have two Firewire ports on them. You just connect another drive to the second port. Barring that you would need a FireWire hub. They are around but not nearly as common as USB hubs. A Froogle search should yield one. -- Clark Martin Redwood City, CA, USA Macintosh / Internet Consulting I'm a designated driver on the Information Super Highway --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to Low End Mac's iMac List, a group for those using G3, G4, G5, and Intel Core iMacs as well as Apple eMacs. Re: Firewall ports?
Hi Wilton. I suspect you mean firewire ports. I have used a firewire hub but was not that happy with it. It seemed to cause some confusion on the firewire bus. Mine was inexpensive. Your mileage may vary with other hubs. An easier solution might be to daisy chain the drives. If your drive enclosures have more than one firewire port, try plugging one drive into the back of the other. This should free up one of the firewire ports on your eMac. Re: G3 iMacs with fully-functional LXDE anyone?
Simon, Bucky, others, I previously wrote: Sure, there is a recent Debian testing/lenny daily build LXDE netstall iso for multiple architectures -- such as the desired PowerPC/G3 arch -- at http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/multi-arch/iso-cd/ This specific build is a multi-architecture network-installation CD that installs Debian-LXDE for PowerPC _AS WELL AS_ the same for i386/ amd64 architectures, and described in further detail by Frans Pop's 01/07/2009 'Bits from the Debian CD team' at http://lwn.net/Articles/313850/ This morning's full directory listing of this is 'debian-Lenny-DI-rc2- amd64-i386-powerpc-netinst.iso 01-Feb-2009 16:28 437M' Note from Frans Pop's writeup that the composition of the multi- architecture install _DVD_ has metamorphosized away while the Debian Install (DI) _CD_ still remains. Therefore, must perforce stick with CD-only ISO-installations of LXDE, and would seek PowerPC(G3)-specific binaries. Since the pre-DV iMacs have tray or slot-loading CD-ROMs, this presents little difficulty for using very basic CDs with stripped-down installer software followed by performing a network-based installation/ upgrade . One key difficulty with this approach is the failure of the actual Debian Installer for PowerPC in its current build state(s). As written in the latest build-logs, url http://people.debian.org/~joeyh/d-i/build-logs.html : --- begin quote --- - daily powerpc images build # powerpc Feb 01 03:05 wou...@ragtime failed build_powerpc_cdrom # powerpc Feb 01 03:08 wou...@ragtime failed build_powerpc_netboot # powerpc Feb 01 03:12 wou...@ragtime failed build_powerpc_netboot- gtk --- end quote --- Granted, these PowerPC build-failure reports are for the bleeding-edge Debian Unstable/Sid, but concerns still remain for using Debian Lenny to run LXDE right out-of-box. Apparently, another means of running LXDE on iMacs is to install using another successful PowerPC-specific Linux distro-build such as a non- LXDE Ubuntu (as per Bucky's Ubuntu CLI suggestion) or Debian build, and once installed, use the appropriate distro's package manager to get LXDE (again, from the appropriate PowerPC binaries) after-the- fact. Preliminary instructions for this 'Installing LXDE from a package manager with an existing Linux system' are at http://wiki.lxde.org/en/Installation For a PowerPC build of Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope, might then investigate the 'Jaunty Jackalope for powerpc (powerpc)'s binary [LXDE] packages' found at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/powerpc/+search?text=lxde For a PowerPC build of Debian Lenny/Testing, might then investigate the 'lenny(testing) LXDE packages' list found at at http://packages.debian.org/search?arch=powerpckeywords=lxde So to summarize this message, the available choices for a desired PowerPC Linux to run LXDE seem to be a) using a PowerPC Linux distro that effectively incorporates LXDE when installed -or- b) using a non- LXDE PowerPC Linux distro for installation on my iMacs to begin with and then -- once the PowerPC Linux distro is successfully installed -- can be effectively upgraded to incorporate LXDE. Anybody with more advanced iMac knowledge have direct or indirect experience here? Similar in some ways to Bucky's lightweight configuration suggestion (s), my own 1st preference would be to go down the b) path for Debian Lenny for PowerPC and afterwards doing LXDE upgrades. Maybe will try this after watching big Classic American Football game, The SuperBowl, here in the U.S. later on today. thumb drives (jump drives)
I just got a 4 GB thumb drive (is this the same thing as a jump drive?). The package says it works with Mac OS 9.1.x+ and OS X. I got it to transport files between my trusty Dalmation and the new FlowerPower I just bought. The Dalmation has OS 9.2.2 on it and the Flower Power has 10.4 The thumb drive's icon appears on the Mac with OS 10.4 but will not appear on the desktop of the Dalmation with 9.2.2. Is there something more I need to do when or after inserting it into the Dalmation to make it work? I tried simply inserting it and also leaving it in while rebooting. Also, since I put the Thumb Drive in my Flower Power (with 10.4) the hard drive icon on its desktop has moved down to about the middle of the screen and it remains there even after rebooting. Why did that happen and should I be concerned? As always, thanks in advance for great help and information. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to Low End Mac's iMac List, a group for those using G3, G4, G5, and Intel Core iMacs as well as Apple eMacs. I don't know about the other questions, but the hard drive icon being moved is no big deal, that happens when I plug my flash drive into my OSX 10.4 Powerbook G4. And, flash drives and jump drives are the same thing, so call it what you like. Re: thumb drives (jump drives)
Try clicking on the apple in the right corner. My sister still has my G3 so I do'nt remember the file names, you might be able to restart the computer by selecting OS9.1 as the start up disk and see if the FD appears then. I know I had problems with OS9 Environment when I had the 9.2.2 upgrade installed. I think the 9.2 is your problem.
