The iMac G3 models were designed in such a way that insertion of headphone or 
external speaker jacks into one of the ports automatically kills sound out on 
the internal speakers. However, if one of those ports has been damaged, that 
feature may not work properly. In your case, try plugging in your external 
speakers. If the scratchy internal speakers go dead, you’re golden. If not, the 
sure fix is to physically disconnect the two internal speakers, either by 
disconnecting them at the connectors at the speakers, or by clipping the wires 
coming out of the speakers. Enjoy!

I’ve got the display head of a Wang Calculator sitting on my desk that belonged 
to a long—ago prof in the College 
 No clue where the rest of it 
went :-/, but in 1977  I was at one of these 
 
punching up cards in FORTRAN to run on the Uni’s mainframe. I met one person 
who had an Apple II in that era.

This was before my 12-year long foray into biochemistry (I passed my math 
requirements for my BS with mostly CS courses.) Computers were just a hobby and 
occasional work project. (In 1984 I was working at the General Foods research 
labs in Tarrytown NY and got roped into writing a reporting and analysis front 
end for the computerization of one of our test instruments. 

This on a weird HP DOS-compatible running on a 68000 cpu. Their version of 
BASIC had HPGL built in; I had a big four-pen plotter for an output device.

I got my Apple ][+ shortly thereafter, my first Mac in ’88.)

That said I DID have the UCSD p-system for my Apple ][+…still do around the 
house somewhere, if the disks haven’t disintegrated into dust.

I am compelled to wax philosophical here, in support of Colin and the rest
of us who cling to our vintage technology.

I liken it to growing up. It's only when parental support ends that we put
on our big boy pants and sort out our own problems--in this case, to become
our own tech support. I have 26 Macs, from the Mac Classic to my mainstay,
the Mac Mini. Many were non-functioning when I purchased or found them. Now
they ALL work--and have been a great source of learning for me. And as my
very wise dad once told me, "they will continue to do what they were
designed to do." It has kept me not from maximizing RAM, speed and HD
capacity, which I have done in most cases, but from trying to make a
dragster out of a go-cart.

It's virtually impossible to remain current in an ever-changing
marketplace. But that's when it gets interesting; that's where the learning
begins. Friends shake their heads at my fully-functioning retro
paraphernalia, but it makes them think twice before round-filing their own
dusty treasures.

Jack : I havbe an A][, an LC475 running 7.5.3, a PB 1400 running 9.1, an
iMac G3 400 (not running!) an iMac G3 Flowerpowere 600 running 10.3
still wondering if its worth the effort to upgrade to 10.4.11...? a G3
Pismo running 10.4.11, an iMac G4 (not running but down for future
attention!) and an MBP r/d 15" which I love but wish it had a biggerr SSD!

so I think JC can see I am not for conversion - I have NEVER had to use
a PC except in helping to help friends whose PCs were having problems!
