Hi Bill,

Might you be able to use iMovie? Works well for a lot of basic tasks
and the price is right.

The pricing is quite different from what I can see, and cheaper is

Any thoughts welcome. Thanks in advance!

I just wanted to make a final report on this experiment, in case
anyone else wants to try it. I bought a refurbished 500GB
G-Technology G-Drive (with Firewire 800 and USB 3.0) on eBay for
$40. I then replaced the 500GB mechanical drive with my 256GB SSD.
I’ll probably put the HDD in my PC laptop.

The El Capitan install I had performed while the SSD was in the
Iomega enclosure was unreadable, so I had to reinstall the OS.
Fortunately, that went smoothly.

Performance isn’t quite where I hoped it would be. The transfer rate
is about 60MB/s, where I was hoping for 70+ MB/s. Boot time is only
slightly faster. However, the iMac is much more responsive, and I
only see the beachball once in a blue moon. Xcode launches in 6
seconds instead of 20 seconds. So I’ll chalk it up as a success.

Thanks for the assistance and success reports.

Re: Mackeeper Info Thread

2012-01-23 Thread Beverly Woods

As Kim requested, here are some of the problems I have with MacKeeper:

Until recently, MacKeeper installed WINE. I was asked to fix a Mac that
was running at a crawl, with frequent SBBOD, etc. Problem turned out to
be that WINE had taken over most of the CPU. This appears to have been a
common problem with MacKeeper, and users did not have any idea that
MacKeeper installed WINE or what that means. Nor is it trivial for an
unhappy purchaser to discover the problem and remove the offending emulator.

They now have a new version without WINE. But really - something called
MacKeeper that needed WINE to run? Seriously??

And then there's the marketing of it and the way the company takes
advantage of people, misleads them, etc. See for instance these articles:

Hi,

When posting to LEM lists, please trim the quoted text from the

Messages with one or two lines of text above extensive untrimmed

Please also note that your sig lines exceed the max lines allowable on

Intel iMac (early 2006) intermittently will not power on

2009-09-29 Thread Beverly Woods

Hi folks,

I have here an Intel iMac (20, early 2006) that appeared to be
working normally, except that reportedly sometimes it took a long while
of black screen to wake from sleep. I attempted to upgrade the RAM from
512 to 2G (known good RAM that works fine in another of the same
machine). After I did that it would not power on at all - no light, no
noise, nothing. I went back to the original RAM, it still would not
power on until a lot of unplugged time had passed, and now it starts or
won't start intermittently: if it starts normally it seems happy to
restart after that, but once it won't start it seems to want to be left
unplugged for a while or it won't start later. Also if I do anything
with the RAM (try to add another chip, move the existing chip to a
different slot, etc.) it won't start for quite a while after that. The
512 appears to be recognized in either slot, once I get the iMac started
up, but so far I haven't had any luck booting it after installing a
second chip - but of course as with all intermittent issues I am not
certain if it might at some point.

So, my question before I go about replacing the power supply: is
there anything that could cause this issue besides a faulty power
supply, especially any type of logic board failure that could cause
this? (It looks to me like it would be worth replacing the power supply,
but if there is a problem with the logic board that probably would not
be worth replacing.)

TIA,

Beverly

I did that once, never will again. Cost was about $15 and the battery

experience, OWC and others cost way less and last way longer. YMMV.

 Hello Beverly:

I would have been happy to come to you offlist, but you did not
 provide your email address.

Google hides email addresses in the online interface by calling them
macli...@beverlywoods.net and the like, but it is pretty easy to reply
to me anyway. For Al and anyone else who does not know how to do this:

If you get the list via email, the sender's address is in the Sender
column. Copy and paste that into your reply in place of the group's
email address.

If you are going to the Google interface, you can reply offlist to
anyone by clicking on the More Options link at the top of the email,
and then you can choose Reply To Author.

And to contact all of the listnannies of any list you have only to go to
the About This Group page, for instance in this case:

http://groups.google.com/group/imaclist/about

and click where it says Send Email To Owner.

thanks,

Beverly, thanks for the explanation. And I see the truncated,

Speaking of which, any further correspondence on this topic should

I doubt this would apply to an OS past the original OS provided with the

get the Netboot dmg IIRC, but it is my impression Brooks is seeking
OS X for free, and the answer to that is: sorry. We can't help you with

1) Why do you want to run Internet Explorer 5?

2) You do know that Internet Explorer 5.2.3 runs in OS X, right?

This can be caused by a bug in the Finder; I had it happen recently on a
Mac I sometimes work on. Did you recently change a file extension? That
can kick off the bug, IIRC. I have solved it by logging out of the
affected account and logging back in again.

iMac G5 screen flickering issue

2008-12-06 Thread Beverly Woods

Hi all,

I have an iMac G5 whose AppleCare is about to expire in a few days.
For several months I have noticed that the screen flickers a bit,
intermittently, especially when just started or woken from sleep. If I
put a Finder window on the desktop and resize it, the white space in the
window flickers, as does the dark area of the (generic default) desktop
background, as the window is being resized.

I talked to AppleCare and various recalibrations and tests including
Hardware Test Disk and others were run, then I took it to the local
Apple service provider but they said they could find nothing wrong with
it. They think it's a software issue, since they said the screen did not
flicker when booted from another iMac G5 which was in target disk mode
running Leopard. I am dubious about that since the screen flickering
issue persisted even when I had swapped in a new hard drive with a
different 10.4.11 system on it. (I have Leopard, but don't want to
install it on here since I need the G5 to run Classic. 10.4 was the
original OS of this generation of iMac.)

So my question is: is this a familiar issue to anyone? Ideas as to
the cause or fix?

TIA,

Beverly
