Replacement For Bias Peak?
Hi All, I just had to junk my old iMac. I got a newer iMac running Yosemite. But I now find that my old, trusty audio editing software, (Bias Peak now discontinued) doesn't seem to want to work anymore. Does anyone know that Peak program? This imac will run Mac OS 10 Pantber; It may run Tiger as well. However neither OS will run the newer versions of Flash playerd, so graphics are slow or impossible to load. Re: wireless mice and labs
Oh, my! Full disclosure: I have three Macs, two iMacs and one eMac. They are all rescues, all for the same reason: no password. I hacked in and they run very nicely now. I am giving them away. They interested me because they are beautifully designed and have a delightful simplicity. I run Windows 7 ( two flavors) and Linux (Zenwalk; I've run thirty others and use live CDs all the time). I chose windows 7 because for my purposes its better than any Linux, and now I do most of my computing on it. I've used a number of Mac OS systems. They are fine and no one could go wrong buying a nice new Mac. But my money's already been spent on PCs, so you know the rest. Yes indeed, old Macs can and do run well on Linux!. old puters
I'm getting out of the old Apple business. I have an iMac 400 cd/dvd, an iMc 600 cd and a eMac 750 cd.dvd. They all work fine. The first two are Panther 10.3.9; the eMac is Tiger 10.5 The only issue is that the eMac doesn't seem to think that there is anything on its disk, even though it operates OK; I don't know hoew to fix this. The disk properties show 0 kb. They are free, gratis and no charge to anyone who wants to pick them (it?) up in Rochester, NY. They'd be perfect for a kid or as a second unit. I don't have the time or energy to list them on eBay or to pack them. Hard drive mystery
I have an older eMac loaned out that's been working fine. It receives the internet wirelessly via USB and stopped receiving. I looked at it and the light on the wireless receiving device was out, so I tried to install another one. The light was out on this device as well. When I opened that hard drive's properties, I found that it was listed as containing zero kb. When I opened parts of it, I found that the parts were their usual size - even if the sum seemed to be zero. The USB ports seem to work OK - the keyboard and a flash drive are just fine. Re: best unix-like system for my imac?
I use Linux all the time and I too wonder why you'd bother with trying to put it on a Mac. But! My two 32-bit favorites are Vector Linux and Zenwalk. The Age of Linux will never start because in spite of the many improvements and accomodations of the last few years, it still takes a lot of fancy dancing and voodoo to get it all to do what you want. Probably the least difficult to install and run is Vector, but... hey, you wanted flash and java? Well, sit there and figure out how to put them on your browser. Need more codecs for your player? Same story. I'm no expert but I've used fifteen different Linux distros for a month or more. And I tell non-geeky folk to just go buy an Apple. Pay the price, get the stability and service, and use the puter rather than trying to educate yourself! More than anything it seemed like a good use for an imac that was just collecting dust. Besides that, I'd most like to check out various gui options such as gnome, kde, and others. Other than OS X I haven't looked at -nix in years. I'm interested to see if they are now more user friendly. Maybe I should just install Tiger and learn to change the desktop guis via command line in terminal? The various Linuxs may be more user friendly than they were but not more so than OS X. I've been trying many of them out, Debian (ver 2,3,4, 5 and 6), Fedora (ver 9, 10 12), Yellow Dog (ver 3, 4 5), SUSE (ver 11) and Ubuntu (ver 9). I've installed them on old world (where possible), new world Macs and an AMD based system. Somewhere around 90-95% of the cases I had to do some futzing to get system to boot, mostly tweaking the X11 configuration. Coming up to a shell prompt or blank screen is definitely NOT my idea of more friendly. Every time I hear someone suggest something like or just install Linux on it, it's simple I'm glad I'm not drinking something at the time as I'd have a thoroughly soaked computer to deal with. I keep hearing about Linux being the wave of the future but it isn't going to be until just getting a computer to boot properly is much easier. And if you were to ask why I'm doing all this, well, I don't think I can remember why, banging my head on a post seems to have wiped out that memory. -- Clark Martin Redwood City, CA, USA Macintosh / Internet Consulting I'm a designated driver on the Information Super Highway -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. Re: G5 iMac
A really stupid question: have airport card, putting it into an older emac; am I right in assuming that it will just start working without any other singing or dancing? Another really stupid question: is there a way to increase the airport card's range if need be? (I hope this is all right - I read through the rules and didn't see anything about this... Please tell me if it's not.) He asks, Hello and thanks for your replies while I wade through the archives! I'm looking at some used iMac G5 models with the 17 and 20 inch screens. The processor versions include the 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, 1.9 and 2.1 Ghz. Any suggestions and comments are welcome from those who own or have knowledge of these models. Please discuss which ones were/are prone to the LCD screen line problems, the bad capacitors and the pros and cons of the 17 and 20 inch screens. Also, from what I know memory capacity on the 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 is 2 GB. On the 1.9 and 2.1 the capacity is 2.5 GB. Is the bus speed higher on the 1.9 and 2.1 models? Since the latest G5 iMacs were in preparation for the intel switch, are the later models less effective, more problematic and hotter operating with the G5? Please compare power comsumption and overheating problems, if any of these models, quirks, other problems, pros and cons. Mainly, I'd like to know which of these models is the best balance between highest speed with memory config, dependable longevity, power usage, lowest operating temp. The inclusion of a TFT screen or Airport and Bluetooth is not particularly important for my purposes. Thanks for your time! Re: USB 2.0 Up-Grade for iMac (17--inch Flat Panel, 1GHz)
You'll need an Airport card and adapter (furniture), and putting it in is easy. You will also need the Airport software; this should be easy to find. Look on eBay.
