Re: Combo drive for slot-load G3 iMac
Yes, you can get low profile slot load DVD drive thingies. They are quite popular for media centers and some laptops use them as well. But, you are going to run into connector problems and will end up building a custom cable (correct me if I'm wrong). This will be on top of the aligning to the drive cage and case slot issues. Nor are they particularly cheap. It can be done, but practically speaking, you are better off using a drive pulled from a PowerBook. Re: Combo drive for slot-load G3 iMac
I've fitted a drive from a MacBook into my Flower Power G3. It's certainly possible. It's not easy. I've bodged something together but realistically, how practical it is depends on what tools and materials you have to hand... The DVD drive I got has screws of a different type and with different placement from the CD drive from the iMac. It's physically smaller in most dimensions. The DVD drive has no meat in the right place for the screwhole on the CD adaptor board to be of any use. Compared to the CD drive, the DVD drive is skeletal. Care has to be taken than anything you do does not foul the visible mechanisms. Very careful measurement is required to get the slot to line up with the case. Etc... --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to Low End Mac's iMac List, a group for those using G3, G4, G5, and Intel Core iMacs as well as Apple eMacs. RE: Combo drive for slot-load G3 iMac
Dan I think the connections on the drives are the same but the drives in iBooks/PowerBooks/Mac Minis/G5 Intel iMacs and different shape to G3 iMacs. Someone correct me if I am wrong. You could probably fix it in somehow. From memory I think the G3 iMac and G4 Cube use the same drives. It might be easier to fit a DVDRW than find a compatible Combo drive. There was a model of iMac G3 that shipped with a CDRW drive (the graphic model I had at work did) but it couldn't read DVDs. I'd like to install a Combo drive (CD-RW/DVD-ROM), but the only thing I can find online is a SuperDrive from MCE for $149. I have no need to burn DVDs, but I would like to be able to use DVDs in either of these and have the option of burning a CD now and then. I have an 867 MHz 12 PowerBook G4 that I'm parting out, and it got me to thinking. This 'Book has a slot-loading Combo drive - is it possible and practical to install that in one of my iMacs?
