That might be it, but I think it's mostly Windows that's more "loaded" with myriad software "pieces" (sucking CPU cycles and hence power). One hint it's when you boot the two OSes: on my iMac OSX 10.6 it's operative in less than one minute (55"); OTOH, Windows 7 on the same iMac takes at least 2-3 minutes to be responsive. And it's not because of my hardware; on my girlfriend's relatively recent Core i7 laptop, Windows takes around the same time (2-3') to be responsive after boot. What I take from these observations, it's that Windows is - like most Microsoft software - quite bloated :-) -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. Re: iMac 24" Early 2009 - Power consumption info
G5 was called one time by Bruce a space heater. I can attest that when my old G5 was stressed, the fans sounded like a Jumbo taking off. By comparison, Intel CPUs are way better with their power. One explanation as to why Windows will show a much higher power consumption may be related to the fact that it is emulated? As for the power consumption vs. voltage, a higher supply voltage is a bit better than lower one: less loss due to lower current, but the values are not significant. Thanks for sharing. iMac 24" Early 2009 - Power consumption info
Hi all! Today I measured various levels of power consumption of my Early 2009 iMac 24" 2.93 GHz (Intel Core 2 Duo processor). In case someone may be interested, I thought about sharing them here :-) My iMac has 6 GB Ram, and an ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphic card with 512 MB. I set the screen brightness to minimum (System Prefs / Monitor). I tested it with OSX 10.6.8 and Windows 7 (via Bootcamp). A different hardware configuration and/or OS version might produce somehow different values. Values are in Watts, with a 220V voltage (I live in Italy). (I am unsure whether using a different voltage means different Watt numbers) I used a meter called SavePower PM-6300, similar to the Kill-A-Watt common in the USA. Not very accurate, but good enough for this purpose. *** Mac OSX 10.6.8 - Off = 2 - Stop (sleep) = 2-3 - Idle at desktop (no open apps) = 88-90 - Idle with screen off = 44-46 - Idle loaded (3 GB Ram occupied) = 90-92 (+2) - Call of Duty 2 playing = 145-155 *** Windows 7 (Bootcamp) - Idle at desktop (no open apps) = 102-112 (102 after boot - 112 after some use) - Idle with screen off = 68-70 - Firefox open = 113 - Sniper Elite III playing (+ Steam on) = 162 Notice the higher power efficiency of OSX over Windows: just being idle at desktop (basic consumption), Windows draws around 20W more than OSX. With screen off (not dimmed, completely off), there's even an higher difference: Windows draws 24W more. And that happens even having more background processes open in OSX than in Windows (I use Windows just for gaming). For a comparison with the old PPC times, my PowerMac G5 2.7 GHz DP with Radeon 9600 XT drew between 160W at idle and 310W playing Call of Duty 2! And this was just the CPU, without the monitor.
