Re: Fwd: [efloraofindia:77802] 11/05/2011/YRP/01/ Naoroz Estate Chethalayam, Wayanad, Kerala

2011-08-21 Thread Ushadi micromini
Dear MR. Garg and ALL:

Knowing what I know NOW .some clarity and some more
confusion???

SEVERAL POINTS:

POINT 1):This is wax jambu in these pictures ... the size and
exact shape of the fruit is not visible...

the rose colored ones are often labeled " rose apple" in local
supermarkets...
ie it must be a local or colloquial name.. hence the confusion

POINT 2): Another confusion is taste of the fruit... some fruits ,
some years from the same tree, produce fruits with nice sweet/sour
(very dilute of course) taste... some years its just flat... this year
it was of flat tasting fruits...

POINT 3):BUT THE REAL ROSE APPLE IS A DIFFERENT FRUIT
ALTOGETHER, as Yadzy Ji pointed out

AND I HAVE ALREADY PRESENTED A DETAILED PHOTOGRAPHIC DEPICTION OF WHAT
IS A REAL ROSE JAMBU or ROSE APPLE... that has a definite ROSE scent
and from which a rose essence was extracted in the 1840s... PLEASE
SEE MY ORIGINAL THREAD at
http://groups.google.com/group/indiantreepix/browse_thread/thread/c29f5c6969c3eca4/58806f4c38adca6f?lnk=gst&q=usha+di+Rose+apple#58806f4c38adca6f

The trees and their flowers and fruits I presented were identified by
established botanical gardens (arboretums... ) run by
universitiesin California... no mistakes there... AND the fruits
I presented I ate them myself... VERY PLEASANT rose scent and mouth
feel very different from the WAX JAMBU..regardless of color and
regardless of colloquial names be it rose apple or rose jambu or
whatever...
***
POINT 4) : I have some pictures of flowers of a properly identified
tree labeled * Syzygium samarangense*
at Kolkata Botanical Garden ... flowers are definitely white and
fruits were also white since none were seen fallen on the
ground..local urchins collect them asap... I do not have pictures of
fruits fallen out of that tree... and now will have to wait till next
spring and early summer.

POINT 5):FOR further classification: I think one needs better
depiction of the fruits that clearly shows the neck and overall shape
of the fruit... size..

Though I think a lot of variation is possible...

MAY I PLEASE SUGGEST that JADZY Ji send us full side-view of the
fruits, size, and a cut surface picture so that the shape can be
judged

POINT 6) : and PERHAPS the more important point is ... just like
Hydrangeas.. and perhaps other plants... the colors of the flowers
(and perhaps the fruits) may vary with local soil conditions, pH, and
presence / and /or absence of some metals. and micro-nutrients .
may be some one can start a thesis project

THANKS
Usha di

The pictures on your link are indeed the rose apple I was referring

are sweet, unlike the sour sweet taste of the fruits in my pictures.

Re: [efloraofindia:77807] Acacia mangium-DKB1-2011

2011-08-21 Thread Anand Kumar Bhatt
It is a tall tree growing upto 30 meters used as timber. As it is
fast-growing, it is liked by foresters for plantation and for reducing the
load on natural forest growth for timber use.
It produces 1.40 lakh seeds per per kg. Its pod can be eaten.
Because it is a hardy plant producing vast quantity of seed , it is
considered weed at many places. I am told that Tamilnadu govt. earlier
encouraged its plantation but soon reversed the policy.

I remember during this season at home, I would just speak up at home,

Any information whether it has long (up to 5cm long) spines on

Unless we get supportive information along the post for id assumptions
may go here and there. Hence please provide related information along
with the picture. What ever information regarding the plant including
its surroundings are welcome or please try to follow the format for
uploading pictures for id.

Dear All:

On 14th August zipping by on this street on the way to post office I noticed
these humongous leaves...
thought it might be Tectona Grandis
Next day went back and took pictures and talked to the local folks who run tea
stalls and some Bhujia shops on the sidewalk (only  they were around to talk to
) , one of the guys said it grew very fast... this height see figure 1, was
achieved in just 3 months  some branches had come out near the ground which
he said he cut them  off...  some others said it was a kadam gachh (gachh =
tree in bengali) ...
sure!!!  dont beleive it!!!

The leaves are very large... 1.5 feet wide by 2.5 feet long... I measured it...
see figures 2 and 3...  to me the leaf shape just does not match what I
remember as tectona grandis am confused...

I rubbed the leaf underside, even wetted it with saliva..and rubbed ... no red
color developed... see figure 6, the white arrows surround the wetted rubbed
surface, you can still see a little shine?...   of cource its the lower leaf
... not the uppermost "young leaf"... but in the past no matter which leaf I
tested on already identified Teconia grandis, I got the red color, in Bengal,
Gujarat, Bihar and even in USA.. at a botanical Garden ...

Currently there are no branches...

The tree came up on its own.. in harsh broken stony fragments containing
soil... see figure..7.

Date/Time-   8/15/2011
Location- Place, Altitude, GPS-  Sea level or slightly below it, Ganges plain ,
Streets of Kolkata,.
Habitat- Garden/ Urban/ Wild/ Type-  came up on its own per local history
Plant Habit- Tree/ Shrub/ Climber/ Herb-   Tree
Height/Length- Sapling about 10 feet or 11 feet
Leaves Type/ Shape/ Size-  very large, 2.5 by 1.5 foot ( foot, not inches)
Inflorescence Type/ Size- NONE  yet
Flowers Size/ Colour/ Calyx/ Bracts-  NA
Fruits Type/ Shape/ Size Seeds-NA
Other Information like Fragrance, Pollinator, Uses etc.- NA

NA= not applicable

2011-08-21 Thread ushadi Micromini
Dear Neil: I have a great deal of respect for your diagnostic abilities...

and I had indeed doubts about my suspected idea... because of the leaf
shape, color and NO redness when rubbed..

BUT the size of the leaves throws me..still..

AND I took the pictures on 15th August... nothing would have changed in
these 6 says...
But yes I will go back in a months time and take more pictures... and I'll
repeat it till is fully grown...over the years... would be a nice
project...

This may be an interesting fact ...in the life history of Kadam... may be
saplings' first leaves are humongous to manufacture as much food as quickly
as possible and grow fast till its higher // closer to the sun...
this sapling apprantly grew sooo tall in the span of three months...

May be we need a section of "Pediatric Biology " in Botany... growth
patterns and anatomy of saplings... which may be very different than the
mature tree ha ha ..

Re: [efloraofindia:77902] Woody Climber-250111-PKA1

2011-08-21 Thread Giby Kuriakose
As Vijay pointed out the "fruits" belong to, most probably, Menispermaceae
family but I am wondering about the leaves.
Are you sure that you have got the right leaves?
The leaves seems to be of Piper sp.
Leaves of Menispermaceae liana use to be in the canopy and sometimes they
drupe down.

This seems to be a cauliflory.
Please check Anamirta sp of Menispermaceae.

Regards,
Giby
