Re: [efloraofindia:191670] Fwd: Well written piece on tree planting

2014-06-21 Thread satyendra tiwari
In a nutshell simple answer for tree planting species is Plant a fruit tree
that gives you fruit in few years time. By this way person always chooses
the plant that fruits in that area. In Mainpuri district of UP I saw Kathal
and Mulberry trees on both side of a canal. Some Engineer planted those
trees and today Villagers of that area dont buy KATHAL and every plant is
very well safe. Mulberry are very good trees for shade Fruit and birds.

Just read this article and thought I should share it. The bigger picture
should always be taken into account. :)

For PALs, we need to concentrate on planting trees that will help the
nesting and food needs of native birds. Trees like Gulmohur, though pretty,
are of no use!

Tree planting. Everyone does it. Schools do it. MNCs do it. Widows and
mourning relatives do it. Even Nitin Gadkari does it. Last week, the Road
Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced

that
he had plans to plant 200 crore trees along 1 lakh km of National
Highway.Indians frequently combine this anodyne pursuit with another one –
record breaking. In 2012, 9,814 volunteers planted 99,103 saplings

of
Ladakhi willow in an hour, breaking the previous record (66,000 done on the
occasion of a tycoon’s birthday in Philippines
,
in
case you wondered). We also hold the Guinness Book record for the most
number of trees planted in a day by a team
,
but
Pakistan has the one for the most number of trees planted by an individual
in a day
.
Noble
intentions and tree planting always seem to go together.
Sadly, you might want to stop doing it. Experts will tell you that if you
really do love the environment, you should take a step back before you
lower that next sapling into the ground. TheNational Forest Policy
 (1988) aims
to have at least one-third of the country’s total land area under forest or
tree cover, but planting trees without careful consideration can in fact do
more harm than good. Time for some introspection (or intreespection, as you
will).
*What tree am I planting?*
The aforementioned Ladakhi willow proved a sensible choice

in
that particular instance – the roots of these willows bind the soil and
prevent erosion. But if the green baby you are inserting into the ground is
not native to your region, there’s every possibility they will catch
diseases and be zapped by the weather in a way that native trees won’t.
They may also require more water and other resources for their maintenance
than a city may not be able to afford. Non-native trees can also be harmful
to native flora – eucalyptus, which is widely planted in India, strips the
soil of moisture and nutrients and renders the soil in the area infertile.
They can also be eye-poppingly expensive, costing huge amounts of public
money. The government of Punjab, for instance, has been on a spree to plant
date palms in the last few years; Amritsar has date palms lining the road
from the city to the airport. While some claim the trees cost Rs 12,000
each, members of Amritsar-based NGO Mission Aagaaz claim they cost Rs
20,000 each. “We have filed an RTI application so we can have this on
record,” says G Gurbhej, the organization’s secretary.
*Is my tree going to kill someone?*
You have romantic notions of creating a shady canopy for your unborn
grandchildren and decide to plant Rain trees or Silver Oaks. But the roots
of giant, sprawling trees in cramped urban spaces may damage compound
walls, building foundations and water and sewage pipelines. Or in the
monsoon, falli

[efloraofindia:191655] Owls and hindu culture, NeemTree of Goddess Lakshmi

2014-06-21 Thread JANAKI TURAGA
Hi all,
West Bengal celebrates owls as vahana of goddess Lakshmi. The crafts
people make wooden owls made of wood of Neem(Azadirachta indica) and
Gamhar(Gmelina arborea) trees. Reportedly Neem is the sacred wood
associated with Goddess Lakshmi. These owl statues are worshipped
along with Goddess Lakshmi in homes in West Bengal.
These owl statues are either fully painted or partly painted. But in
either form, they are stunning. The size ranges from three inch to
couple of feet.
I happened to see these wooden owls in a craftsperson's stall who had
come from West Bengal to sell his wares in Dilli Haat. A special
exhibition of crafts of West Bengal is currently on at Dilli Haat, INA
near the open air theatre.
This special West Bengal exhibition will be on until 30th, June, 2014.
These days owls are in fashion as jewellery items, and as brass
decorative pieces.
But come Diwali, and owls have to flee for their lives!!!
It is intriguing that we have cultures that celebrate and yet destroy
birds and animals at the same time.
Are there other trees whose wood is preferred and is used for making
temples etc. of Gods or statues of gods and goddesses? Would
appreciate any input on this.
Kind Regards
Janaki

When I joined this efI group, about three years ago, I knew nothing.
Whatever I have learned about plant identification is all generous
contributions of this fantastic group. I am fully indebted to the 'pillars'

could interact with the most respected persons of our society.

I am grateful to your kind generosity. I surely will meet you when I visit

Thank you very much.

2014-06-21 Thread satyendra tiwari
Sorry, I missed this email before.
Mirrorless cameras are new thing in the market.
Many people are not happy with the thought that they are going to loose the
competition to a person who can carry all his equipments with mirrorless
camera in his vest pocket from macro to 600 mm lens.
First Professional who is using it is John Issac a retired UN Photographer.
He is using Olympus and getting good results. My another American Friend Mr
Dan Lafel is using mirror less camera and he likes it.
There is no harm in switching over to these new mirrorless cameras.

Re: [efloraofindia:191649] Tree for ID (Euphorbiaceae)

2014-06-21 Thread Gurcharan Singh
Perhaps this key based on Fl. of China and Flora of Thailand should help

Female inflorescence unbranched, fruit densely softly spiny, 15 mm
across.M. nepalensis
Female inflorescence branched, fruit 10 mm
across...2

Fruit 3-locular, with few (ca 30) 4-5 mm long spines; leaf base cuneate,
broadest
in portion from lower third to middle, basal glands 2, basal veins
3-5M. paniculata
Fruit 4-locular (commonly), with numerous (ca 100) short less than 3 mm
long
spines; leaf base rounded or truncate, broadest below lower third,
basal
glands 2-4, basal veins
3M.
tetracoccus

May be Tapas ji has better key from his book.

2014-06-21 Thread surajit koley
Without close-up of entire flowers and some size stat. I am unable to
suggest anything. Instead, I copy a few words from 'Bengal Plant' -

i) bark of twigs brown; branchlets of inflorescence sharply 4-angled; fruit
the size of a pea = *fruticosa*; FBI notes - leaves similar to those of
*jambolana*, variable. FoC notes ripe fruit red -
http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=200014839
ii) bark of twigs white; branchlets of inflorescence bluntly 4-angled;
fruit as large as an olive = *jambolana* (*cumini*). FoC notes fruit red to
black - http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=200014832

Thanks and regards

Fwd: [efloraofindia:191628] DSLR vs Mirrorless cameras

Subject: [efloraofindia:190092] DSLR vs Mirrorless cameras
To: efloraofindia

All of us have photography as our first love, and flowers the second. All
of us on this forum are using cameras, preferably DSLR to have good results
of close up, some using point and shoot or other compact digital cameras. I
have two DSLR Canon 550d and Sony alpha 100, one Panasonic Lumix, and now
my Sony Z1 mobile with 20 mp camera. I did not carry these to USA trip for
5 months as my son here has a good Sony alpha 700. The latter developed
problem when we were visiting University of California Botanical Garden,
and not able to get it repaired we thought of buying a new one and almost
short-listed Nikon 3200 (with 24 mp), a good recent DSLR when I read one
listing on Amazon with a person having bought it one month ago wanted to
sell it because he wanted to shift to mirrorless camera. I request members
to share their experience and expertise to help others in deciding between
the two types of cameras, especially when we want good photographs of
flowers.
Here is a website which compares the two.
