Re: [efloraofindia:198664] IBG today : variegated Canna

2014-08-26 Thread Ushadi Micromini
botanical naming is a mystery to me when it comes to commercial interests
and cut-throat pricing wars based on the name of a cultivar or a hybrid...
esp tea roses , its more than cut-throat..

and its shameless esp when the parents (sometimes both ) may have been
"stolen" from the country of origin... It not only happened as a matter of
their rights during colonial era, it goes on today ... cite basmati,
turmeric, neem, many many varieties of Hoya, and orchids in particular...

I gave up guessing a long time ago

Pretoria may be a colloquial name
at various botanical gardens in the west I have seen this labelled as :

 Its called Canna 'striata

 http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=b909

 MOBot shows reddish flowers

but I have also seen and photographed yellow flowers at NYBG

 http://garden-photos-com.photoshelter.com/gallery/Canna-Stock-Photos/Gb4pwKujf8c0/

this page shows yellow flowers halfway down the page.

Re: [efloraofindia:198686] Alocasia or Colocasia sp. (Araceae) for ID

2014-08-26 Thread surajit koley
Sawmliana Ji,

Except *C. gigantea
* I
couldn't find any other *Colocasia* with white spathe. Aroid.org informs
the same -
http://www.aroid.org/gallery/lucas/arch/Colocasia%20esculenta%20large%20pc.html.
But your plant doesn't look like *C. gigantea* and it may not be found in
India, though wiki has it in Manipur -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colocasia_gigantea! Reports on interspecific
and intergeneric (with *Alocasia* or *Remusatia*) natural hybridization can
be found in the net!

*Alocasia* can also have peltate leaves, as can be seen in *fornicata*, but
usually they have glossy/shiny/polished leaves. I couldn't find any
*Alocasia* matching your plant.

There is one *Gonatanthus sarmentosus* Klotzsch
 which is edible -
http://www.isca.in/IJBS/Archive/v2/i11/11.ISCA-IRJBS-2013-175.pdf, pictures
can be seen at (i)
http://sikkimbiodiversity.blogspot.in/2014/03/gonatanthus-pumilus-dwarf-gonatanthus.html
 (ii) http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalog/slides/Dwarf%20Gonatanthus.html
 (iii) http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/8477/ .. yet spadix
doesn't match.

I am not objecting to *C. esculenta* the id suggested by others in this
thread.

Thank you

Regards
