 Dear members,

I have updated eFI (efloraofindia) page on Abelmoschus

  (Pl.
 click).

Attempts have been made to incorporate most of the species available in
India & nearby areas with details & keys directly or through links as far
as possible. It’s quite possible that there may be some discrepancy in the
accepted names & synonyms taken from other links.

Species discussed so far in efloraofindia are given at the bottom of
the page in the form of links against Subpages. On clicking them one can
 see all the details.

If someone can provide complete list of Indian species with source
 references it will be wonderful.
 Any comments/ corrections are welcome.

Re: [efloraofindia:203246] Re: MBNN Fortnight :: MENISPERMACEAE :: # RVS-Oct 03

2014-10-14 Thread Dinesh Valke
Vijayasankar ji,

I think it is not a straight-forward effort. The challenge is posed by
differing sizes of the images attached. To make them appear uniformly tall
or wide is very difficult and cumbersome. The pictures in such tables *must*
be thumbnails of original sized images to make page light-weight - easier
for the audience to download.

I could be pessimistic; please wait for more comments.

Regards.
Dinesh

2014-10-14 Thread Ushadi Micromini
ARUN: First, nice to see a rarity. I am surprised he let you pick it up and
photograph it. Good.

Your question is bound to bring out believers and skeptics alike.

But...

who is to say ... let us not go all faint over it, but on the other hand
let us not be so skeptical as to miss an important piece of info...

may be in a couple of hundred years the humanity will have a machine and
hundreds of smart people who will design amplifiers and detectors recorders
and mathematical models to detect the spiritual energy that is purported
nowadays to rudraksha beads...

or may be not...

but if we were told told that there was a god particle/ Higgs Boson a
couple of hundred years ago, we would have laughed at them

And if a few hundred years ago we were told heart and the brain had
electric currents in them, what would have happened to the messenger?

Only now EKG/ECG and EEG are important and mundane/routine diagnostic
tools. and have spawned more elaborate and precise diagnostic visualization
tools.

AS technology advances and detection methods are made more sensitive and
precise, more and more of the subtle energies in the human, animal and
plant word will be authenticated, described classified and accepted or
rejected...

It is all science, it starts with a belief or old wives tales... as in case
of discovery of Digitalis..and hundreds of others, . look it up google is
full of many such stories...

Millions of people take the baby aspirin, on a belief only, if you look at
the meta data very carefully there is no real data that supports taking it
for prevention of heart attack.. rather it may ppt internal bleeding, but
millions of still take it. BELIEF that 80mgs of a tar derived chemical
will help them live longer and keep the specter of a heart attack away is
driving billions of dollar turn over every year.

SO lets discover what's the belief and old wives tales for this seed.

usha di

P.S.there are sacred trees, sacred groves , sacred rivers, sacred
places all over the world... in all cultures, all religions, so lets keep
an open mind. Many books and PHD thesis and hence careers have been made
on study of the sacred beliefs, even at such lofty places at the Harvard
University.

Rawat ji, having such photoguide for all the families and genera is my wish

there won't be any storage/ size issues.
This might need suitable programming and lots and lots of time and efforts.
But as you said it will be really helpful to have an overview of the family

2014-10-14 Thread Ushadi Micromini
Ashwini just had a case :
[efloraofindia:202418] Lavender/ABOCT06

english lavender

and we had some discussion on origin of the lavender epitaph for this
plant, its surmised that the taste and smell (of lemony family of smell )
must be the reason!!!

anyway that question is still open, if any aroma- specialist knows the
histroy we would like to know.

thanks for these pictures Prashant, lovely and complete.

There are a lot of variations in the shape of leaves in this species.
Specimens from Jawa, Peru etc (RBG, Kew) look different from south Indian
plants.

[efloraofindia:203218] Re: SHIBPUR IBG : sk-Oct-09 : unknown

2014-10-14 Thread D.S Rawat
Two species of Jacquinia are listed in IBG-
1) J.berterii with leaves obovate, cuneate at base, rounded at apex
2) J.ruscifolia with leaves broadly lanceolate, acuminate, fls red and fruit
elliptic yellow (immature).
Comparing your pics with these species it is more closer to J.ruscifolia.

However, I have not seen any Jacquinia species in my life!

sorry typos... found thenm as soon as I pressed the send button..

corrected message:

May we please see the whole tree and some of its early leaves as they begin
to emerge at the tail end of the flowering episode???

This is Chorisia speciosa... or Cheiba speciosa... silk floss tree.

The trunk should have typical thorns and branching pattern is unique.

I would appreciate the4 whole tree picture.

*ps its always nice to photograph the whole tree, its habitat and trunk
etc when one does not know its identity...*

Some earlier relevant feedback:

A wild-guess from the available clarity would be Terminalia panicualata-
from Vinayaraj ji

I dont think it is Terminalia paniculata. Precise location in Trivandrum
city would be more easy for
me to take a good photograph.SANTHOSH
