Fwd: [efloraofindia:210441] Kindly help with identification of this Cultivated Succulent.

2014-12-23 Thread J.M. Garg
Forwarding again for Id confirmation or otherwise please.

Some earlier relevant feedback:
a ground cover for xeriscaping, esp along the highways in sw usa
pinkish or purple ice plant 2with rounded tip to the ?leaves
you'll run into a lot of species names
run the key
many things are called the purple iceplant
but many have thin blads or pointed ends to their leaves ... yours seems to
be like the perfectly rounded succulent leaf tip..
most likely would be *Drosanthemum Floribundum Rosea*
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/183673/
however do run the key and if you have more pictures that would help you .
and let me know what you decide ...

[efloraofindia:210418] Flora picture of the Year 2014

2014-12-23 Thread J.M. Garg
Dear members,
Year 2013 is passing by & efloraofindia (efi in short) has generated an
unprecedented interest in photographing Indian Flora, it's identification &
documentation.

Let us post one of our best images by each of the member. It may be based
on a difficult situation, a rare plant, a technically sound image, a beauty
never to be forgotten, a beauty of joy, a great story telling photograph
etc.
Let us keep the subject as "Flora Picture of the year 2014- Name of the
Photographer" only.
Don't forget to tell the story behind the picture, which makes even an
ordinary picture look outstanding.

Last few years' pictures & story behind them are available at
Flora Picture of the year- 2008

Flora Picture of the year- 2009

Flora Picture of the year- 2010

Flora Picture of the year- 2011

We may request Satish Phadke ji to put them along with the stories/
comments on the blog with his expertise in this area as he has done in last
years.

Good morning Didi, since you have already suggested a possibility I
also thought of *G.* "superb", a search for its ("superb") leaf
and comparing other details like inflo size, flowering season

year) may help go further. Of-course that would be a probability only.

To my utter amazement I noticed the seeds of KUNCH in a wasteplace behind
our new building. My mom told me that it was called KUNCH and it was used
to weigh gold! From that day I regularly visited the place to collect KUNCH
seeds. I had a small container filled with these beautiful seeds.

But later on, I have never found this vine anywhere. Even after
becoming a member of this group, when I searched new places for new
species, I have seen it only once in Hooghly. The 2nd time it was in
 Jhargram.

Someone told me that this vine can be seen in places where there is
 enough human excreta!

study groups of exotics , not to mention university level groups to
 study
and id these ... with live specimen in hand and often if not live,
 superb
close ups all aspects of the plants and flowers and dissections...

 Aarti:

thanks for the fifth pic , but it dos not tell me the plant size
and details of the leaves etc...

I am happy with Grevillea sp, cultivar
questions that arise with any plant and esp here with so many
 cultivars out there...
what is the shape of the plant, how tall, what does the stem and
bark look like, branching, leaves details, and then flower
 spike/inflorescence ... size etc...
I am not even sure of the color..is it pink? is it red? is it
orange? is it orangeish red? digital cameras do a number with some
 red
colored flowers and leaves ... ... unless we also take a reference card
with us and photograph it along with red its often difficult ... esp
 out
 under the open sky...

now the question is : which do i pick from these ps pics above
taken in a hurry: which cultivar???
..".ned kelly", "superb",, or "robyn gordon", cultivars or is it
 g. juniperina?

 its a difficult task

Re: [efloraofindia:210399] Small Ornamental Tree : Grevillea Species : California : 06NOV14 : AK-18

2014-12-23 Thread Aarti S. Khale
Usha Di,
I have attached all the pictures I had.
Unfortunately, don't have any more details to reply about.
How I am suppose to take the measurements would be anybody's guess, since
it would be a guess only.
How am I suppose to study the flowering season of an ornamental I have come
across in a sight seeing trip?
I really wish I had the answers and could help you further.
Thanks for taking such a lot of interest in this Grevillea.
For me, I am happy to identify it as a Grevillea Species Cultivar.
Good day and regards,
Aarti

2014-12-23 Thread Ushadi Micromini
Very nice, Surajit

Pods are what we call Mogri in gujarati and eat them in salads and very
quick saute...

I found some being grown in the staff housing near the annual car rally,
the pods were inviting.. i took a few pictures and the lady of the house
ca,me out yelling , but turned to smiles when she discovered that all i
wanted was to take pictures...

and we get mogri in the vegetable markets were there is a sizable gujarati
, marathi and konkani /, goan population... the sabziwalas make a bundle

I had seen a couple of pictures many years ago in a travel magazine where
these pods/mogri-fruits-pods were served in bowls in a bar along with beer
in germany... those were the days when we still had east and west
germany... that's how old the information is ...and i had taken the
picture ot my local grocery store manager to see if he could find me those
pods...

and he did a year later... and he kept selling them out totally for about
a week or two.. when the local farm ran out of their radish crop... and we
did this for about a couple of more years till we moved

but have not found a real reference about use in germany ...
some intrepid traveler can perhaps get a picture or two and a story to go
with it...

nice

but the same buds are in both pictures
seem these will open up

so if some do open up
can it be possible to photograph them
and if they do open up what pollinators visit them
and how does the fruit look like?

since its a plantation I am sure there are some flower bud bunches that
escape picking?

I would be interesting to know if the owners of these orchards allow th
flowers to mature till opening, pollinated, and fruit sets?

Re: [efloraofindia:210383] Crassulaceae, Combretaceae and Myrtaceae Fortnight: Combretaceae: Crassula sp from Kashmir for ID-GSDEC07

2014-12-23 Thread surajit koley
Didi,
The link I have provided in my earlier mail

informs, in its description of 'SEDEVERIA x Hummellii sp. nov.',
"leaves at apex obtuish to acute... ." But, now I change my view.

Two features of this plant are -
1) naked peduncle
2) prominent leaf scar
and third, moonstone like leaves

Google search doesn't provide any image, either of *Sedum* or *Sedeveria* or
of *Echeveria*.showing those two characters.

Instead we will have to think of the genus *Pachyphytum
*,
something in the line *P. oviferum
*
or
*P. hookeri *.

Thank you
Regards

Thank you Usha di for your feedback...

However, I am now confused...the pics 1, 2 and 3 are from one location and
4 and 6 from another..
I have seen the fruiting of both these treese and they are very similar
looking to the jamun that we get in the markets (oval to round shaped),
except that they are a bit smaller in size.

As a result, I assumed its identity to be S. cuminibut now since they
are not, requesting to please provide ID...

Thanks and regards

Nice set of pictures

I agree to the diagnosis :) only because of the nice new leaf in the first

2014-12-23 Thread Ushadi Micromini
What a nice complete set of pictures
enough to make a sensible diagnosis by a non-botanist like me

so

Not Syzygium cumini

if you got the name from a label on the tree its wrong

look at the fruits in the last picture
and you will have your correct diagnosis

so now could you please tell us what your decision that you yourself
arrived at?

you have eaten these in summer months

real leaves are at the bottom

in this case it would be way at the bottom almost near the soil

It is Dillenia sp. But i am unable to identify the species. In wild we have
D. pentagyna in our forest but this seems to be a planted sp. so cud also
be D.indica.

Jui
