Thanks for suggested id.
I had suggested Pennisetum too in my initial post.
This was growing wild, not cultivated.

its called the MAD tree// Pagla gachh
a unique variant of Pterygota alata,
 called *Pterygota alata diversifolia*
 budhhas coconut

 on our page https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/species/m--
 -z/m/malvaceae/pterygota/pterygota-alata
Padmini Raghavan has shown the diversity of the fallen leaves

 so far from the discussions
 i surmise
there is at least one specimen in Kolkata (Agri Horti,); Shibpur (
Botanical garden,); Chennai (Agri horti) Bangalore (IISC campus)

 and now Bangalore (Lalbagh)

 good documentation of occurrence

I know you go back to Lalbagh often
next few years if you remember you can help guage its growth over the
 years.

Sooner or later you really do have to settle down and learn the characters
by reading the books, and learn what needs to be shown in photos for each
genus/species. I repeat there is NO rhizome shown, so we can't see if the
scales are white (D. giffitianana) or russet-brown (D. bullata).
Over to you to get things right - otherwise why are these photos being
posted or even taken if they are not adequate?
 Chris F.-J., over and out!

[efloraofindia:300241] Fwd: CALLOTROPIS GIGANTIA ( ARKA ) PLANT MENTIONED IN MAHABHARAT ( STORY OF UPAMANYU )

2018-07-16 Thread J.M. Garg
Thanks, Bimal ji, for the great story and the presentation.

-- Forwarded message -

Subject: CALLOTROPIS GIGANTIA ( ARKA ) PLANT MENTIONED IN MAHABHARAT (
STORY OF UPAMANYU )
To:

Mahabharat does not mention many plant species in the narration. In this
regard Ramayan is unique, it mentions almost 150 distinct plant species.
Valmiki was a great observer of nature.
The most important tree mentioned in Mahabharat is SHAMI( Prosopis
cineraria). Another plant I found is ARKA.
This plant is mentioned in story of Upamanyu. Most of you must be aware of
this story. It goes like this.
Rishi Ayoda Dhaumya had three disciples . One of them was Upamanyu. He was
supposed to look after the cattle of Guru. Guru never asked him to take
food but he observed that Upamanyu was healthy. Guru asked him how come he
maintains good health without taking food. Upamanyu replied that he beg and
survives on alms. On this Guru told him he must deposit it with Guru
whatever he gets as alms. Upamanyu told that it would be done.
Few days passed, Guru asked him what did he eat as we was depositing all
the items to the Guru. On this Upamanyu told that he ask for alms second
time. Guru told him that this practice should discontinue. Next time when
Guru asked him the secret of his health, he told that he drinks milk from
the cows. Guru told him to discontinue this practice. Next time he told
Guru that he drank froth thrown out by the calves. Guru told him to stop
that. As there was no other alternative Upamanyu ate Arka ( Callotropis
gigantia ), turnd blind and fell into a well. Guru came with other
disciples and rescued him.
This what available literature says about toxicity of the plant under
reference.
" Callotropis is a poisonous plant .The milky latex sap of the plant is
known to cause keratoconjuncivitis and reversible vision loss. "
Attaching an image of this plant. Incidentally it is a host plant for Plain
Tiger butterfly.

2018-07-16 Thread Ushadi Micromini
well Mahadeswara ji is right, sort of. :)

its called the MAD tree// Pagla gachh
a unique variant of Pterygota alata,
called *Pterygota alata diversifolia*
budhhas coconut

on our page
https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/species/m---z/m/malvaceae/pterygota/pterygota-alata
Padmini Raghavan has shown the diversity of the fallen leaves

so far from the discussions
i surmise
there is at least one specimen in Kolkata (Agri Horti,); Shibpur (
Botanical garden,); Chennai (Agri horti) Bangalore (IISC campus)

and now Bangalore (Lalbagh)

good documentation of occurrence

I know you go back to Lalbagh often
next few years if you remember you can help guage its growth over the years.

These two trees are close by in the garden .

2018-07-16 Thread Ushadi Micromini
You are on the right track, Mahadeswara ji

I found a leaf pic thats almost a look alike of pic number 5
in this case
at
https://florafaunaweb.nparks.gov.sg/special-pages/plant-detail.aspx?id=3168

and it shows yellow flowers.

and a short write up as to how differentiate the two you chose in

https://florafaunaweb.nparks.gov.sg/special-pages/plant-detail.aspx?id=3168
both are from a singapore gov parks site

so essentially it boils down to waiting for the flowers

yellow trumpet flowers in hot weather in bengal

Re: [efloraofindia:300175] Strobilanthes scaber from South Andaman

2018-07-16 Thread joju alappatt
 Sir,
I compared the specimen with the images of isotype of Strobilanthes
andamanensis at Kew and found different from it. The isotype of
Strobilanthes andamanensis at Kew (K000883177) received from Forest
Research Institute, Dehradun (No.9052) has been later identified as S.
glandulosus.
