2019-01-24 Thread Ushadi Micromini
Dinesh
i have been looking at this and
searching

seems cylindropuntia is the correct tract

and it may be this or very similar to it
Cylindropuntia ramosissima
url http://ucjeps.berkeley.edu/eflora/eflora_display.php?tid=80399
from uc berkeley

it allows description to be exploded but not the dichotomous key...

description makes me think its likely C. ramosissima
but to make it more complicated there is a c. echinocarpa
but that looks as if it has a different growth pattern and thorns

but how did it get imported to rajasthan from mexico...
i guess it would be at the same time as when thor...the opuntias were
imported to india

see what you think
usha di

ps it would be interesting if you had a chance to revisit when these are
flowering and then fruiting if ever?

it would be too hot i guess. never mind
dont go in that heat.

The posted plant, clearly has a conspicuous ear-like structure
(auriculate pseudo-stipule) at the base of each leaf stalk. Thus, as per
keys, will be not *A. gigantea*.
I suggest we also pay heed to the fruits which are different looking
 among the above listed species.
Will return to this post when I find the plant in flowering as well as
 fruiting.

 as below:

Dutchman's pipe (*Aristolochia elegans*) is similar to several closely
related introduced species that have also become naturalised in Australia,
including pelican flower (*Aristolochia grandiflora*), fragrant
Dutchman's pipe (*Arsitolochia odoratissima*) and gaping Dutchman's
pipe (*Aristolochia ringens*). It is also very similar to the
cultivated giant dutchman's pipe (*Aristolochia gigantea*) which
is often confused with pelican flower (*Aristolochia grandiflora*) in
the horticultural industry. These species can be distinguished by the
 following differences:

- *Dutchman's pipe (Aristolochia elegans) has a small ear-like
structure (i.e. auriculate pseudo-stipule) at the base of each leaf
 stalk*.
Its flowers are relatively large and broad (up to 7.5 cm long and 10 cm
wide) and its relatively large fruit (4-6 cm long and about 2.5 cm wide)
are oblong in shape with a short projection (about 10 mm long) at the
 tip.

- *giant dutchman's pipe (Aristolochia gigantea ) does not
have a small ear-like structure (i.e. auriculate pseudo-stipule) at the
base of each leaf stalk*. Its flowers are very large and broad (up
to 30 cm long and 20 cm wide) and its relatively large fruit (up to 8 cm
long and 3 cm wide) are oblong in shape with a very short projection at
 the
tip.

- pelican flower (*Aristolochia grandiflora*) does not have a small
ear-like structure (i.e. auriculate pseudo-stipule) at the base of each
leaf stalk. Its flowers are very large (up to 25 cm long) with a very
elongated projection at the base of the flower (i.e. appendix) 20-50 cm
long. Its very large fruit are oblong in shape (about 10 cm long and
 4-6 cm
wide).

- fragrant Dutchman's pipe (*Arsitolochia odoratissima*) has a
small ear-like structure (i.e. auriculate pseudo-stipule) at the base of
each leaf stalk. Its flowers are relatively large and broad (6-12 cm
 wide)
and its moderately large fruit (4.5-8 cm long and 1-1.5 cm wide) are
 oblong
in shape and slightly curved.

- gaping Dutchman's pipe (*Aristolochia ringens*) has a small
ear-like structure (i.e. auriculate pseudo-stipule) at the base of each
leaf stalk. Its flowers are relatively large and narrow (10-25 cm long)
 and
are split into an upper and lower lobe.

Usha Di,
No pictures of the bark.
The weather was very cloudy and it started raining, so we had to rush back
to the vehicle.
Didn't go closer to the tree.
All pictures taken from a distance only.

[efloraofindia:315379] Mahabaleshwar's Syzygium cumini

2019-01-24 Thread Sharmila Punde
Dear All,
Please take a look at -
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/indiantreepix/QZ7AZGEm_I8
Aarti ji had shared pictures of Syzygium cumini from Mahabaleshwar.

Sorry for invoking the thread. There are few points about this Syzygium
cumini tree which Arti Ji posted and about kala jamun tree fruits we eat.
1. Why fruits of Syzygium cumini from Mahabaleshwar are so small ?. Is it
because cultivated one has more nurishment provided or both are different
species?
2. Do the one we eat as Jamun tree drops sticky drops in the morning? In
Mahabaleshwar, this tree drops sticky drops.
3. One thing i heard from local that this tree in Mahabaleshwar grow very
slow. But the jamun tree we eat fruits of grows very fast as per
observation.

Thanks
Sharmila

2019-01-24 Thread sharmilafloraindia
Dear All,
Sorry for invoking the thread. There are few points about this *Syzygium
cumini* tree which Arti Ji posted and about kala jamun tree we eat.
1. Why fruits are so small?. Is it because cultivated one has more
nurishment provided or both are different species?
2. Do the one we eat as Jamun tree drops sticky drops in the morning? In
Mahabaleshwar, this tree drops sticky drops.
3. One thing i heard from local that this tree in Mahabaleshwar grow very
slow. But the jamun we eat grows very fast as per observation.

I think it’s Viola diffusa, the description in Flora of Bhutan perfectly
match with the photos. I also looked at type specimen:
https://plants.jstor.org/stable/viewer/10./al.ap.specimen.bm001191014

So I would go with Viola diffusa.

Dear Mr. Garg,

Actually I did check all these beforehand and re-checked. I did not find
exact match

to any one but some closeness to V. diffusa however it is for me regarding
the

flowering seasonality.

The green patch in the center of the flower and the leaf pattern looks like
matching.

Enclosing some links for comparison.

Species Viola diffusa Ging.
