[efloraofindia:428151] Re: Request for addition of Stranvaesia nussia

2022-07-14 Thread D.S Rawat

Yes, it is reported in Gaur, 1999 (Flora of the District Garhwal Northwest
Himalaya). The citations in it show that species is also mentioned in Flora
of Chamoli vol-1 by Naithani (1984). In The Flora of British India it is
described at page 382 of Volume 2 under the name *Stravensia glaucescens*
Lindl.
Osmaston 1927 (A Forest Flora for Kumaon) also described it at page 221
under the same name *Stravensia glaucescens* Lindl. This shows that the
species is mentioned under different names in different floras. Even in
Uniyal et al. 2007 (Flowering Plants of Uttarakhand A Checklist) is listed
under the name *Photinia nussia* (D.Don) Kalkman and same name is used in
Rosaceae of Flora of
Nepal.

In flora of India checklist (online) listed it under the name *Photinia
nussia* (Buch.Ham. ex D. Don) Kalkman (to see click here

)

Currently accepted name of this species is *Stranvaesia nussia* (Buch.Ham.
ex D. Don) Decne in POWO

which
is not used in Flora of India checklist (online) or in Hard copy (Mao &
Dash, 2020) which prompted me to say it is new to Indian flora, which it is
not.
*Synonyms must also be checked before any conclusion, which I didn't and so
my sincere apologies for this.*

2022-07-06 Thread D.S Rawat
Thank you A. Floden Ji for this determination.
I am taking it as *P. kansuense*.
The new circumscriptions of various taxa under *P. verticillatum* are yet
to be accepted universally. Though, the species *P. vericillatum* ( as
understood in Indian context) is very different from it (*P. kansuense*)
and occurs at relatively lower elevations (up to 3000 m) in this part of
the Himalaya.

Fine upload Ashutosh Ji.
Never seen it in nature.
Very specific plant.
I wish we could make a separate page for "Parasitic Plants of India"
showing all at one place in eFI database.

A different Lathyrus. I saw it at an elevation of about 2700m in Tehri

2022-06-20 Thread D.S Rawat
It is not in Campanulaceae. There are two carpels in it.
It is Solanaceae..
*Atropa acuminata* is the closest match. Compare here in
eFI: https://efloraofindia.com/2011/02/08/atropa-acuminata/

Please check for stem character. It is angular in this specimen.

[efloraofindia:425838] Re: Identification required of this lilium sp.

Closer to *Lilium polyphyllum*.
Please compare with *Lilium* species available in eFI at
: https://efloraofindia.com/category/species/a-l-d0/l/liliaceae/lilium/

It seems that *L. polyphyllum* have two forms in Western Himalaya. One with
brown spotted tepals and other with spotless tepals as here.

The morphology is quite misleading, suggesting it as *Saxifraga*.
But many carpels in the flower place it in Crassulaceae.
Closer to *Sedum sedoides* (Crassulaceae).

Thank you very much Saroj Ji for this long pending identification.
It seems that good live images are not available for this species.
These images in eFI will be helpful in future ID of species.

Re: [efloraofindia:366424] Kailash-Manasarovar Yatra::Saussurea inversa NSJ-OCT 16/11

2020-11-21 Thread D.S Rawat
To me the images posted by Narendra Joshi Ji are closer to *S. glacialis*
or allied species in which plants are woolly in appearance.
*S. bracteata* as I understand and as mentioned in indian floristic
literature and also in the book by Stainton (Supplement to Flowers of the
Himalaya, plate-55), is a plant with distinct erect stem and long
lanceolate leaves. It resembles *S. obvallata* in habit.
*S. bracteata* and *S. schultzii* may be two separate species but Indian
literature has merged them into *S. bracteata*. These may be different
species but must be closer in morphology based on which indian literature
merges them together.
Both of these species (*S.bracteata* or *S. schultzii*) do not resemble the
images posted by Joshi Ji.

[efloraofindia:354535] Re: Changes to eFI pages

2020-07-10 Thread D.S Rawat
Yes Singh Sir, updation is a continuous process. One of the important
source for this is Plant Discoveries, a report published each year by BSI
on 5th June (delayed this year). This report includes all new species/
subspecies names described from India and all new records to India in a
calander year.
However, the problem lies with those families which are yet to be published
by BSI in Flora of India series.
Some sources in BSI have indicated early publication of Checklist of
Flowering Plants/ Plants which will make our present job easy.
Regards.

[efloraofindia:352713] efloraofindiaturns 13

2020-06-16 Thread D.S Rawat
A journey inspired by the book “The Monk who sold his Ferrari” and started
on 18th June 2007 has become 13 years old. It is no more a solitary affair,
rather, has grown into a huge *carvan*. Today on 17th June 2020 eFI
<https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/home> (efloraofindia: Database
of Plants of Indian Subcontinent- developed by the members of Efloraofindia
Google Group) has grown up to 13 years, now a teenager with enormous
potential. It has attracted the attention of amateurs and professionals,
naturalists, flora photographers, ecologists, students, teachers,
taxonomists, in fact people from all walks of life; it is a non-ignorable
treasure of plant diversity of Indian subcontinent. More than half of the
wild flowering plant wealth of Indian subcontinent is displayed on the
pages of eFI <https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/home> in the form
of lively images. Owing to its extensive coverage it is becoming more and
more visible to the people world over.

Presently, more than 13,000 species are displayed with more than
3,00,000 vivid images taken by members of this group. To be more apt these
images are arranged on family, genera and species pages to offer
comparative view and to facilitate easy identification. More than 255
families and more than 2800 genera of seed plants (Angiosperms and
Gymnosperms) are showcased in eFI today. eFI database
<https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/home> is founded on 30 strong
Pillars
<https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/about-us/pillars-of-efloraofindia>,
more than 50 dedicated Subject Experts
<https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/about-us/subject-experts>,
more than 325 Major Contributors
<https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/about-us/major-contributors>,
more than 10,000 previous and existing members and well managed by about 32
Moderators <https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/about-us/moderators>
.

eFI <https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/home> is not
restricted to Flowering Plants (Angiosperms) and Gymnosperms, but also
contains identified images of many Pteridophytes, Bryophytes, Algae and
Fungi.

Unidentified images on eFI pages are a treasure trove to taxonomists
and pose a challenge to explore. Few have already turned out to be new
species, new records to the country, extremely rare species not collected
since a long time or species photographed for the first time ever.
 eFI database <https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/home> is a
result of selfless teamwork during these 13 years and the *motto* is “*display
every plant species of India*”. Members from different parts of India and
adjacent countries have enriched this resource. It is time to salute
team-eFI (Pillars
<https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/about-us/pillars-of-efloraofindia>
, Subject Experts
<https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/about-us/subject-experts>,
Moderators <https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/about-us/moderators>
, Major Contributors
<https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/about-us/major-contributors> and
members) for untiring efforts to showcase plant diversity of Indian
Subcontinent and offering it free to all the nature lovers of the world.

Re: [efloraofindia:344958] Leontopodium leontopodinum (Asteraceae) from Uttarakhand: Sep. 2014_DSR_21

2020-03-06 Thread D.S Rawat
Garg Ji
This plant is *Leontopodium ochroleucum* Beauverd
<https://www.ipni.org/a/15847-1>
Both floras mentioned by you consider *L. leontopodinum* as synonym of this
species. *Leontopodium leontopodioides* (given in Flora of China) is a
completely different species.
World Flora Online 2020 (
http://www.worldfloraonline.org/taxon/wfo-080700 ) accept *Lentopodium
leontopodinum* as correct name.
Plants of the World 2019 (
http://plantsoftheworldonline.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:229643-1#synonyms)
considere *Leontopodium ochroleucum* as correct name.
Catalogue of Life 2019 (
http://www.catalogueoflife.org/annual-checklist/2019/details/species/id/f74675387db831b5f7c4e6bde1d38884/synonym/772b049b05f0a8815461fd353f09e736)
consider *Leontopodium ochroleucum* as correct name. Indian literature
(Uniyal et al. 2007; Pusalkar & Singh 2012; Karthikeyan et al. 2009 ) have
used the name *L. leontopodinum* as correct name.
So, it is up to us which database we follow. Accordingly the correct name
can be used.

May be, if I encounter this tree on mountains in Kumaon, the ID be resolved.

The 'Conclusion' link given by Garg Ji seems to be a part of the thesis of
Dr Binoj Kumar. He, with Dr N.P. Balakrishnan has written a revision of
Euphorbia genus in India. Further details about this species may be found
in their book:
https://www.amazon.in/Genus-Euphorbia-L-Euphorbiaceae-taxonomic/dp/812110761X
I do not have it but it must be there in BSI libraries or university

[efloraofindia:321211] Re: Gagea bulbifera submission

2019-05-07 Thread D.S Rawat
Yes it matches well with *G. bulbifera* (Pall.) Salisb.
The specimen at Kew (shown in your link of POWO) was determined by Shyamali
Dasgupta who has also written Fascicle 23 of Flora of India which included
Gagea. I checked the description in this document which matches.
Bulbiferous cauline leaves are characteristic feature here.
Species is known only from Himachal Pradesh in India. It may be a rare
species as Dasgupta mentioned only two specimens - E.R.Johnson at CAL, and
J.R.Drummond at Kew. Both must be very old. Flora of Himachal Pradesh has
not mentioned this species.

[efloraofindia:320541] Re: Sinopodophyllum (Berberidaceae) is a synonym of Podophyllum

2019-04-27 Thread D.S Rawat
Interesting questions posed by Tapas Da.
Experts may have answers to these.
If two subspecies exist together these will hybridize (being same species!)
and there will be mixing of their distinct characters. Whether these two
subspecies exist in Gurudongmar area or not is not clear from the text of
this document.
Two leaf, three leaf forms of *Podophyllum* exist also in Western Himalaya
so this character is variable.
Flora of India volume 1 (page 415, 1993) lists two species *P. hexandrum*
Royle & *P. sikkimensis* Chatterjee & Mukerjee in Indian Himalaya. *P.
sikkimensis* is included in *Dysosma* Woodson as D. aurantiocaulis
(Hand.-Mazz.) Hu. Considering similarities of *Dysosma*, *Podophyllum* a
key to separate these and two subspecies of Podophyllum (given as
Sinopodophyllum) would had been quite useful.
Transfer to *Podophyllum*. opportunity suggested here. Rest will be
done by 'New Combination Hunters'.

Re: [efloraofindia:316853] Lamiaceae (incl. Verbenaceae) Fortnight :: Lamiaceae :: Meriandra benghalensis :: Almora :: ARKMAY-13/13

2019-02-11 Thread D.S Rawat
*Meriandra benghalensis* is a synonym of *Salvia dianthera* (see here-
http://plantsoftheworldonline.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:456098-1)
but this plant is not Salvia in my opinion. Rather it should be in Ocimum
genus.
Please compare with available Ocimum species in eFI
<https://sites.google.com/site/efloraofindia/species/a---l/l/lamiaceae/ocimum>
.
