Hello friends
The blackish fruits were spotted in the Aarey forest in November 2016. It was a
bush, may be 3-4 feet in height, I forgot to take the pic of the whole plant.
Are they Leea indica?

2016-06-17 Thread 'Neil Soares' via efloraofindia
Hi, Agreed. I stand corrected. This is Crotolaria leptostachya.          With
regards,             Neil Soares.
P.S. - my post titled 'Ficus callosa' was also wrong. As pointed out, that was
Ficus drupacea. My apologies. - am not willing to comment on my other post
'Ipomea clarkei' because these plants were identified by both Dr.Almeida &
Santosh Yadav. Have sought further clarification from them but it has not been
forthcoming.

There seems to be some miscommunication here Neil.
This looks like Crotalaria leptostachya.

Why so?
1. Crotalaria triquetra inflorescnce is few flowered (c/f C. leptostachya where
inflorescence is many flowered, as here)
2. Crotalaria triquetra is usually not more than 50-75cms in height whereas C.
leptostachya is 1m+.
3. Leaves here are suggestive of C. leptostachya.

Hi, Neil ji,There has been a lot of taxonomic confusions in this genus with
hundreds of synonyms.
I don't find anything like Carissa congesta var. albida (in Kew Bull. 1948:
490. 1949) either in WCSP or GRINBSI eflora of India list so many species,
which are mostly synonyms now as per WCSP link.
As per WCSP, Carissa congesta Wight, Icon. Pl. Ind. Orient. 4: t. 1289 (1848)
is a syn. of Carissa spinarum L., Mant. Pl. 2: 559 (1771).
If you pursue other threads in Carissa carandas, you will certainly feel that
the current post is of Carissa carandas

The post in eFI group that you have pointed, has keys provided by Gurcharan ji.
He concludes by saying "Things are not very clear seeing lot of variability and

fruit go with C. carandas".
There is lot of variability and confusion; status of C. congesta is not clear.
Let us hope some one sorting this genus comes forward and puts his / her

Hi, Dr. Almeida has in his 'Flora of Maharashtra', Vol. 1 changed it's name to
Nothopodytes [not Nothapodytes] oblonga [Miers.] comb. nov.   Frequent at
higher altitudes. Have encountered it at Mahabaleshwar, Amboli and Khandala. A
drug extracted from it's bark has anticancerous properties.                With

i see that not much is written up that defines its tree properly, what a family

not much studied
may be not economically important?
i wonder

By the way nice diagnosis for such an uncommon specimen.
NEIL, did Dr ALmeida describe it?

Hi,
Dr.Almeida in his 'Flora of Maharashtra' Vol-4A; pg.23, refers to it as Carvia
callos. Strobilanthes callosus is listed as a synomym.
Bremekempia [pgs 20 - 22] is considered as a separate Genus.

AlkaJI,

You are right, it is now known as Strobilanthes callosus Nees following the
earlier taxonomic concept of treating Strobilanthes as a single genus.
Bremekamp had a narrow generic concept of treating  Strobilanthes into several
genera and currently his concept has been rejected. According to Bremekamp, the
true Strobilanthes was not occurring in India then.
