2018-10-11 Thread Shrikant Ingalhalikar
The architectural inspiration is from trimerous floral diagram of
Amaryllidaceae or rather from Hymenocallis that grows in the Arabian deserts.
Three petals each in 2 series, a 3 lobed ovary and a central spire that
resembles a style that spirals skywards. Even pyres resembling stamens can be
seen adnate to the central column.
You can search Google Earth to see this from the satellite, I can't show it.

The tallest structure on Earth is not even a decade old. Olive is a celebrated
tree of the Mediterranean and specimens that are more than a few thousand years
are known to exist. Olive symbolises peace and victory. I even saw the doves
perched on Olive branches. Here the heritage olives are planted to bless a long
life to the Burj. The biomimicry in the architectural design with Hymenocallis
flower is also very interesting.

Re: [efloraofindia:305072] Strobilanthes pulneyensis at Eravikulam National Park - PKA13

2018-09-19 Thread Shrikant Ingalhalikar
Dear Ushadi, Strobilanthes genus is split in new generas in North western
ghats. In the erstwhile genus there were 12 species. Of these S callosa, S
sessilis, S reticulatus and S scrobiculatus have been seen to flower every 7
years, the flowering years do not overlap though. These species grow in pure
stands hence it's a great sight when they defoliate and flower together in
abundance. A few of these plants may flower as exception in different years.
The rest of 8 species flower each year but the flowers are sparse.
I have no idea about the rest of India. Presently there is great sensation
about Neelkurunji blooming after 12 years in Nilgiris hence Strobilanthes is on
the anvil.

Re: [efloraofindia:294460] Hibiscus hirtus : fruit and seeds

2018-05-07 Thread Shrikant Ingalhalikar
H hirtus is herbaceous, has leaves longer than broad, usually entire.
Flowers are white, opening by noon, remain white till fading.
H micranthus is shrubby, has leaves broader than long, usually lobed.
Flowers are white, open in the morning and turn pink by noon.
I am unable to understand the confusion between the two. Plants posted by
Dineshji and Viplavji are H hirtus alright. Regards

2018-04-02 Thread Shrikant Ingalhalikar
For Rhamnus the petals have to be minute or o. What is seen is a calyx. I am
not familiar with this plant but if we assume leaves to be subopposite then it
can be Rhamnaceae. A dissected flower could have shown the styles, disc and
minute petals inserted under it. Stipules seen are also intriguing but in all
it may be Rhamnus.

[efloraofindia:281013] Re: Indian plants

2017-11-09 Thread Shrikant Ingalhalikar
Thanks Krushnamegh, Gargji and Navendu. There is no doubt an urgent need to
develope a flagship portal for Indian Plants since it has been a missing
link in the ecology of India.

Flowers of India and eflora as such can be called as PBR, the people's
biodiversity register. The vast participation here is really commendable.
Even expert botanists, ecologists and naturalists have been a part of this
sharing platform. Exploring every plant group in each geographical zone is
not possible for any expert; so experts too are benefitted by being on
these groups. Even an iota from a post is enough for an expert to extract
rest of the information on a plant. However this is not the case with the
rest. They need a systematic and illustrated information.

I have tried to introduce formats for photographs and descriptions but they
were found to be 'scientific' hence got rejected. Hence specific details to
help identification of a taxa can not be found in multitude of posts.

The ideal format for a portal on Indian plants in my opinion can not be any
different than eflora of China. This means that we can not avoid
classification and taxanomy. This may ward off amateurs or the objective of
a PBR. The border line between amateur and scientific botany hence can not
be defined.

I feel that idea of developing a new portal is good but that needs to be
taken up at an institute level. It is afterall a monumental effort.
