Hi,
That's what I was given to understand though I found no mention of it in any
reference books.
              Regards,
               Neil Soares.

I beg your pardon, Sir, do you mean those rusty dots on the blades are glands?

Thank you Sir... you have saved me from revisiting T. bellirica :) But it
raises my curiosity more...!

Pl don't worry Satish ji. Surajit ji can't do that :) beacuse T. bellirica is
perhaps the only species (in India at least) that do not have foliar glands.
Sorry to disappoint you :)
However, the posted pictures are of Terminalia bellirica as identified by Dr.
Neil. We have observed variations in the size and shape of leaves as well as
fruits in this species.

Surajit ji
May I request you one thing. Try to capture the glands at the base of mature
leaf. I am sure you will do that.
Unfortunately I don't have good photograph of these.
I recently learnt that every Terminalia has unique gland structure. Why not
have good photographs of each?
This request is even to other members.

Dear Neil Sir & Pankaj Sir,

Good evening...

I am now convinced that the plant/tree is T. bellirica as have been identified
by you. Initially i was hesitant because -

1) because of the description of 2.15 cm long leaf-stalk as in -
http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalog/slides/Baheda.html

2) in my images all leaves originate from the apex of the shoot, whereas your
imges at - http://www.discoverlife.org/mp/20p?see=I_PAO1999&res=640 and at -
https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!searchin/indiantreepix/Terminalia$20Neil$20Soares/indiantreepix/3xFtSa7jWFo/rq4suJX2k-IJ
show alternate leaves. Most other images available in the net also tally with
both of you.

However, after more search found my target at -
http://ayurvedaelements.com/resources/spice/Terminalia%20belerica.png?timestamp=1266630963601
. Moreover, wiki says, "Two varieties of T. belerica are found in India..." -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terminalia_bellirica.

Thank you very much for giving me your valuable time and identifying this tree.
I cannot express my gratitude in terms of words only.

Regards,

Surajit

Good morning Sir and thank you.

But the leaf stalk is much longer in my post than this description "Leaves are
8-20 cm long, 7.5-15 cm wide, on stalks 2.15 cm long...."
at http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalog/slides/Baheda.html.

Have a nice day Sir....

Surajit
