This tree is growing on a steep and entirely natural rock face. It is not a
man-made "wall".

[efloraofindia:221643] Re: Flora of Madh: Morinda coreia var. tomentosa - Buds & Flowers : VG-APR-06

2015-04-20 Thread vipl...@gmail.com
Dear Surajit ji,

Thank you very much for the link to your thread
.
The stamen exsertion in your flowers is similar to what I've posted. But
the stipules in your photographs appear to be larger, roundish &
persistent, quite unlike the small (c. 4 mm) triangular stipule
 seen by
me which is caducous. In the flowers I've posted, the corolla tube is
glabrous on the inside and hairy on the outer surface
;
I'm
unable to ascertain the same in your photographs. It would be interesting
also to see the fruits of your plant if possible.

Best wishes, Viplav

It is essentially the same tree; from what I understand, consensus on the
accepted name & synonymy is lacking. Have related the background of the
scientific name that I've used in my post on the flowers of this tree

2015-04-20 Thread vipl...@gmail.com
Dear Surajit ji,

It is difficult for me to say anything definitive from these photographs
alone. Another problem, as mentioned in my previous email to Radha ji, is
that there is substantial confusion surrounding the current nomenclature &
synonymy of *Morinda* spp. (including *M. exserta *Roxb*.*).

In my posts, I have used the name *Morinda coreia* var. *tomentosa* as per
the keys by RR Fernandez
<https://08511630493324166816.googlegroups.com/attach/83410cd801743ca3/08_Morinda_key_Fernandez.jpg?part=0.8&view=1&vt=ANaJVrHfmAvymogqKvW7zVddTOJt05S28mK4_Mr0jQVPWxf2n5DNr9akhVea9Q7w2dhbNACRYPnarBMPYXzMqaJ3OdGTbh9yw6h4G6tzQLq2zXZjG-VZhaA>

[efloraofindia:221803] Re: Flora of Madh: Morinda coreia var. tomentosa - Buds & Flowers : VG-APR-06

2015-04-22 Thread vipl...@gmail.com
Thank you Radha ji & Surajit ji for your thoughts. I am also intrigued by
the reason behind different individuals of this tree bearing separate kinds
of flowers i.e. with 'exserted anthers - included stigma' and vice versa. I
have not come across these two different flower types/morphs on a single
individual.

Based on the above, would it be correct to infer that this tree is a
distylous plant exhibiting heterostyly
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heterostyly>?

In the description of the genus *Morinda* in Flora of China
<http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=121192>, the
flowers are said to be "bisexual and distylous".

Flora of China
<http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=121192> further
states that "Morinda includes a notable range of breeding systems
(Johansson, Opera Bot. 122: 1-167. 1994), but most of the species are
apparently distylous, with the anthers and stigmas separated and their
positions reciprocal between the short-styled and long-styled form of the
same species; however, this biology has been sometimes overlooked."

Best wishes, Viplav

PS: In the paper on *Morinda* in Bangladesh, everything is exserted in the
line drawing depicting the flower of *M. pubescens* i.e. anthers as well as
stigma. I have not come across such a flower so far.

[efloraofindia:221880] Re: Flora of Madh: Morinda coreia var. tomentosa - Buds & Flowers : VG-APR-06

2015-04-23 Thread vipl...@gmail.com
Dear Surajit ji,

The occurrence of distylous flowers in the genus *Morinda* has been
documented in several sources including those quoted in my previous email.
Once we admit to the existence of heterostyly in this genus, don't you
think it negates the core basis upon which *M. exserta* was conceived and
separated from the rest i.e. exsertion of the stamens and inclusion of the
stigma? The possibility of the same occurring in the entire genus may have
been either discounted or overlooked at the time.

*Morinda exserta* Roxb. was described in the second volume of Roxburgh's
Flora Indica, first published posthumously in 1824 (pp. 199-200
<http://books.google.co.in/books?id=V1w-cAAJ&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q=morinda%20exserta&f=false>).
Roxburgh would have recorded his observations much before his demise in
1815. In the year 1866, fifty-one years after Roxburgh's passing, "Heterostyly
was first defined by Hildebrand (1866) as the presence of di- or
trimorphism in the length of the style and stamens between flowers on
separate plants of the same species.
<http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10./j.1469-8137.1981.tb02348.x/pdf>
"

With the benefit of hindsight, we can sense the tenuous premise upon which *M.
exserta* was based, at a time when thorough investigation into the
phenomenon of heterostyly was decades away.

It would be interesting to learn about any breakthrough involving the plant
in your thread
<https://groups.google.com/d/msg/indiantreepix/V7HGakB7kYQ/APFWz1ed2qMJ>. I
think I have already conveyed my reluctance-cum-inability to attempt an
identification of your individual plant from the limited available
photographs.

Best wishes, Viplav

PS: The quote on heterostyly in the 2nd para. has been sourced from the
journal New Phytologist, vol. 89, issue 4, p. 693, Dec. 1981. The PDF is
hyperlinked in the quoted text.

2012-04-03 Thread vipl...@gmail.com
Have seen both in South Kachchh and they are also documented in Thakar's
treatise on the plants of Kachchh [1926].

In Gujarati, *Cassia* *purpurea* [i.e. *Senna* *sophera* var. *purpurea*]
is known as કાળી *કાસુંદરી *[Kaali Kasundari]. In Kachchhi, some of its
descriptive names are Kaari Sundari and Shyam Sundari.

>From what I gather, 'Kaali' signifies the diagnostic 'darker' appearance
[purple twigs] of the variety *purpurea*. In contrast, the variety *sophera* is
simply known as Kasundari while *S.* *occidentalis* is Kasundaro in
Gujarati.

I'll make it a point to photograph these when I go there this year.

Re: [efloraofindia:118924] Boraginaceae Week :: Ehretia laevis in Thane

2012-06-06 Thread vipl...@gmail.com
The Gujarati name of this tree - વઢવારડી [Vadhwaardi] - is derived from
વઢવાડ [Vadhwaad], meaning 'quarrel'.

In the province of myth and moonshine, the timber of this tree has been
lumbered with a singular nuisance value, its utility being offset by the
notion that the presence of this wood in one's home would lead to
implacable spats and quarrels in the household!

Re: [efloraofindia:140262] Hooghly Today : Euphorbia hirta Linnaeus

2012-12-09 Thread vipl...@gmail.com
Hi Surajit ji,

It is nice to see a mention of late Kaviraj Shivkali Bhattacharya in your
email. A naturopath friend in Bhavnagar had told me about his profound
knowledge of herbs and Ayurveda.

Thanks, Viplav

Hi,

This is *Albuca bracteata*, commonly known as False Sea Onion or Pregnant
Onion. A couple of adventitious bulblets are partially visible on the
posterior left side and there is a 'pregnant' bulge on the lower right side
of the bulb. This plant reproduces quite easily once the bulblets fall off
and take root.

Hi,

The bulb will cast off the outer layer to reveal the bulblets; until then,
they appear as little bumps on the surface. Eventually, the bulblets fall
off and take root.

There are some nice pictures on this page:

Re: [efloraofindia:159136] Re: Pisonia alba flowering in Mumbai

2013-07-02 Thread vipl...@gmail.com
Back in Mumbai after a month of travelling and catching up with all the
emails here...

Ms Geeta Rane: The hands at work are often overzealous and the plants may
look stubby for awhile but periodical pruning / trimming is no cause for
alarm. What is really shameful, and habitually unremarked by most, is that
a portion of that traffic island - which also happens to be the site of the
26/11 memorial - has been transformed into a makeshift garbage dump. FYI, I
had first sighted the flowers on 27 May 2013 and the plant that was
flowering most profusely in the corner adjoining the subway had been
uprooted when I revisited the site on the 2nd of June with Mr Ingalhalikar
and his friends. It appears that you and your friends have missed seeing
that plant altogether. Even now, you might encounter mango crates, glass &
plastic waste callously dumped around the *Pisonia* stand. Not unusual for
one of the dirtiest cities on the planet in every manner possible.

>From what I’ve noticed in the short period between 27 May and 1 June 2013,
the flowering has been scattered across Mumbai. However, it is imperative
to underscore that the non-flowering plants far outnumber the paltry few
that have flowered in each of these localities...

Hi,

This is *Cassia grandis*. The immature leaflets of this tree are of a
characteristic coppery tinge, some of which are visible in your second pic.
In the flowers of *C. grandis*, one of the upper petals has a yellow basal
spot as is evident in your third photograph. The flowers of this tree lack
the three swollen yellow stamens of *C. javanica *and *C. renigera*.

Re: [efloraofindia:162455] 090813SG request for ID

2013-08-11 Thread vipl...@gmail.com
Agree with Adittya ji. It is *Enicostema littorale*, an important medicinal
plant. According to The Plant
List,
*E. littorale* is a synonym of *Enicostema axillare* subsp. *littorale*.
The genus is often (mis)spelt with a double 'm'.

It is a fairly common monsoon herb in Kachchh. Sharing my pictures of this
plant in a separate email.

Re: [efloraofindia:165154] plant 2 taken in Rishi Valley near Madanapalli

2013-09-09 Thread vipl...@gmail.com
In light of the paper linked in my previous email, this plant appears to
match with *Barleria mysorensis. *Have pasted the key to both the species
along with some additional notes from the paper by Shendage & Yadav (who
have examined *B. mysorensis* from near Rishi Valley) herewith:

Plants glandular-hairy; flowers pedicelled, pink; outer sepals
linear-lanceolate, entire, twice longer than inner ones. - *B. mysorensis*

Plants not glandular-hairy; flowers sessile, white or sky blue; outer
sepals broadly ovate, dentate, four times longer than inner ones. *- B.
buxifolia*
*
*
*Barleria mysorensis* "closely resembles *B. buxifolia* but differs in
entire plant being glandular-hairy; flowers pedicellate and pink; outer
sepals ovate-oblong and inner sepals slightly smaller than outer ones.
Flowers open between 7 and 9 am and remain till the next day."*

India"
by SM Shendage and SR Yadav, Rheedea, Vol. 20 (2), p. 81-130, 2010.

photographs of trees taken over the last forty years are currently on
display at the
