Modules from another repository?

2001-12-04 Thread Angus Duggan

Larry & others; here's a feature request, which I don't believe is currently
available under CVS. It may be on your to-do list. I'd like to be able to
have modules include modules on another CVS repository. Some of my projects
use libraries from a third party, I would like to be able to refer to a
definitive source for that module. Presumably, the server would just send
back the repository and root spec to the client, which would be required to
supply the correct authentication to the third-party repository.

A little more info -- What I would be doing is applying an rtag to files in
the repository. Then I would checkout these files plus those from the
previous baseline to create a new baseline. I would then build these files.
These files that get rtagged would be those files approved for this build
and not necessarily the latest versions checked in.

Is this possible?

2001-12-04 Thread Don Weeks

Here is what I need to be able to do. (As background, I am used to
ClearCase and have not had much experience with CVS.) I need to capture the
filename and user name for each file committed to a repository so that
later, I can use this data to tag exactly that file version later. This is
how I have maintained build baselines in the past and track exactly which
files were added. I know I can script against commitinfo but it looks like
I will not get enough info on the file to go back and tag it later.

Logging checkouts

2001-12-04 Thread Jeff Echtenkamp

I'm managing a set of "library" type functions that
people will be using on other projects. Due to the
nature of this repository, there is a chance I won't
know everyone personally who is checking things out,
etc.

This sounds like a pretty straight forward problem,
but is there an easy way to track who has checked
out something from my repository, so that, god forbid
I find a bug in my code, I can see who all has
it, and make sure they get the latest patch?
Right now, we do this via a GNATS database, but
this requires that people look routinely in the
GNATS database to see what has changed... I'd
like to be a bit more proactive than that... because
someone could have cut a release that they thought
was ok, and be done with it... and then lo and
behold 6 months later they hit my bug only to
find out it was solved 6 months ago, and they
didn't bother checking things.

(If possible also reply to my email address as well)

Thanks!

VSS attaches a userid to each label when it is created, and uses the
same line format for both labels and new revisions. VSS2CVS,
similarly, sends both types of lines through the same parser.

Of course you are right that this is totally unnecessary, since CVS
keeps neither userid nor timestamp with its labels. (The code worked
that way when I got it, and since it worked, I didn't mess with it!

There is a 1.14 available. It does have a change to that regexp to
allow VSS userid's with embedded spaces (and replaces those spaces
with "_" in CVS) - could that be your problem?

You can get the latest vss2cvs at:

http://www.laine.org:8080/cvs/vss2cvs

I'm currently having DNS problems (my primary DNS was run by a friend
whose system got taken out by the @home shutdown :-(, and the updates
to my records at the NIC haven't yet been propogated everywhere), so if the above
doesn't work, try this:

Sure! Always glad to get improvements! Send them to me and I'll do my
best to put them in (as long as they don't break working with the
native Windows build of CVS). It may be a day or two before mail to
laine.org starts working again, so don't be surprised if you get a
bounce or two.

It tells you more than that (although it isn't obvious): because the
"for " is in parentheses, it indicates that the problem is
with the username/password rather than the repository. If your system
has an AUTHPRIV facility for sensitive information, the actual username
and password are logged there. (AUTHPRIV messages are typically sent to
a separate file that is readable only by root.)

I already found the answer - it's the perl script :(
Though the perl script itself seems to be OK, apparently, the implementation
of crypt it uses isn't: I tried the one used with Cygwin and it works like a
charm..

Now for a linux port of the cygwin port of the linux function crypt()..
(my linux doesn't compile it)

Thanx for all the help!

RE: problem with password authentication

2001-12-04 Thread Ronald Landheer

OK, now I'm using cvs-1.11.1p, and get this in the /var/log/messages file:
Dec 4 20:30:10 jukebox cvs: login failure (for
/home/cvs-repository/cvs-otv)
Aside from the time being on GMT in stead of CET, this doesn't tell me much
I didn't already know - it tells me login failed.

The password in the passwd file is encrypted by this perl script:
-- BEGIN cvs-cryptout --
#!/usr/bin/perl

srand (time());
my $randletter = "(int (rand (26)) + (int (rand (1) + .5) % 2 ? 65 : 97))";
my $salt = sprintf ("%c%c", eval $randletter, eval $randletter);
my $plaintext = shift;
my $crypttext = crypt ($plaintext, $salt);

print "${crypttext}\n";
--- END cvs-cryptout ---
Could you verify that this is OK?
I see no reason why it shouldn't be, but hey..

Other than that, an empty password field in the passwd file should work out
with no password if I do a login, right?
so I changed the line in the passwd file to
cvs-test:
That's all

Darn. it works.

OK - it's the password..
Again: is the perl script OK?

Thanx so far :)

CVS 1.11.1p1 (which you can get from www.cvshome.org) logs authorization
failures using syslog (under the DAEMON facility for general information
and, if it exists, AUTHPRIV for specific username and password info).
If you're sure the repository now matches, it's almost certainly a

The newlines are not actually there - that would be too easy.
I upgraded to CVS-1.11-3 a while after sending the post
I noticed the error in my xinetd.d/cvspserver file just after I sent the
post, and fixed it, but it still doesn't work. I removed the other possible
repositories - still doesn't work. I added -t to the command-line options -
doesn't produce any more output.
Nothing hows up in /var/log/messages (I'm not sure anything is supposed to)
and I don't know which other logs are kept by CVS (any?)

If you see anything, please say so :)

I trust that newline isn't really there (if it is, it's a problem).

If you look carefully, you'll see that the repository you're trying to

It is trivially easy -- all you need is something like:

foo foo
bar bar

The module file can be quite useful -- I'm not sure why you're so
opposed to actually learning about useful features of the software
you're using.

No, the attitude of the (all volunteer) CVS developers is that we prefer

I have to agree that this is more of a problem than it should be, but here's
a neat trick:

cvs -nt co .

Assuming top level repository directories named foo, bar, and baz, this will
give you output like:

cvs checkout: notice: main loop with
CVSROOT=:pserver:name@server:/somecvsroot
S-> do_module (., Updating, , )
S-> do_module (., Updating, , )
S-> unlink(./CVS/Entries.Static)
cvs server: Updating .
cvs server: New directory `CVSROOT' -- ignored
cvs server: New directory `bar' -- ignored
cvs server: New directory `baz' -- ignored
cvs server: New directory `foo' -- ignored

It only works this well on the top level, but that helps.
Cheers,
Jerry

What you are saying is that I should make a pointless alias in the
modules file to the modules in question and whenever I wish to
create a new module I must do the same. I don't know how to
write module file entires, I will have to learn and then add the
pointless entries you describe. I could but why should I? Surely
the purpose of software is to provide an easy and powerful ways to

appreciate it.

Is the attitude of the CVS developers "it was hard to write so it
should be hard to use?"

Modifying comments via loginfo trigger

2001-12-04 Thread Mark

What is the best way to implement a loginfo trigger to modify comments of a
file just committed.

We have seemingly random login IDs and I want to have a trigger add a comment
line right after the commit that inserts the real users name so who made the
change is easily identifiable.

Currently, I am to do this with 'cvs admin -m' command in a forked trigger (so
the loginfo trigger can exit, releasing the CVS lock and the child process
checks out the file in a temp dir to run 'cvs admin'). However, even though the
parent process exited, releasing the lock, the cvs client does not return the
prompt till the child trigger exits. Is there anyway to correct this added
delay for the user.

Is there a better way do do what I am trying to do?

cvs 1.11.1p1 on sol 2.6 in pserver mode

thanks,

Mark

Config files - cvsignore sometimes?

2001-12-04 Thread Jack Baty

I'm using CVS for web app development. I typically keep a /config directory
for things like local settings (database login, file paths, etc.). I'm having
a tough time figuring out how to manage these files. I'd like to make sure
that whenever someone checks out the module that they get the /config
directory containing a default set of configuration files. But, when they
modify their local copy and check it back in, I'd like to *not* have the local
changes overwrite the copy in the repository.

Any pointers on how to accomplish this would be helpful.

My guess is that you've got a CVSROOT/loginfo file that specifies a
filter program that is exiting without reading its standard input.

Re: cvs error, please help

2001-12-04 Thread Gianni Mariani

You need to figure out what is causing the cvs pserver to die.

Check the system log. /var/log/messages on the server.

You could try setting :

`$CVS_CLIENT_LOG'
Used for debugging only in client-server mode. If set, everything
sent to the server is logged into ``$CVS_CLIENT_LOG'.in' and
everything sent from the server is logged into
``$CVS_CLIENT_LOG'.out'.

`$CVS_SERVER_SLEEP'
Used only for debugging the server side in client-server mode. If
set, delays the start of the server child process the specified
amount of seconds so that you can attach to it with a debugger.

You could also try adding '-t' to your pserver setup.

Is the :pserver: system is out of disk space ?

A brute force diagnostic method I use is 'strace' . Running it in pserver
mode means you need to run a program that forks off an strace and
then execs cvs pserver - it means coding up a little program like that.
The program below does exactly that. I used it once to diagnose a
cvs pserver problem from wincvs (it turned out that the user had
entered the wrong password)!

#include
#include
#include
#include
#include
#include
#include

int main( int argc, char ** argv )
{

int errfd = open( "/tmp/fixer.log", O_RDWR | O_CREAT, 0777 );
int pid;
int ppid = getpid();

char buf[ 1024 ];

sprintf(
buf,
"UID = %d : EUID = %d: GID = %d : EGID = %d\n",
getuid(),
geteuid(),
getgid(),
getegid()
);

write( errfd, buf, strlen( buf ) );

pid = fork();

if ( pid == -1 ) {
int serrno = errno;

dup2( errfd, 2);
errno = serrno;
perror( "fork" );
exit( 1 );
}

if ( pid ) {

int serrno = errno;
sleep( 3 );
execv( argv[1], argv + 2 );
dup2( errfd, 2);
errno = serrno;
perror( "execv" );
exit( 1 );
} else {

// Child
char strpid[ 10 ];
char * argx[ 4 ];
dup2( errfd, 1);
dup2( errfd, 2);

argx[ 0 ] = argv[1];
argx[ 1 ] = "-p";
argx[ 2 ] = strpid;
argx[ 3 ] = 0;

sprintf( strpid, "%d", ppid );
execvp( "/usr/bin/strace", argx );
}

}

I doubt that you'll get to the last option, it's for people with
that macho who needs that damn manual attitude - Larry
is probably going to puke ! :)

Good luck

It depends on what connection method you're using. For a local
repository or for a remote repository accessed with :ext: or :server:,
CVS uses the user-ID. For a remote repository accessed with :pserver:,
CVS uses a username and password. When using :pserver:, it is possible
to map multiple users to the same Unix user; see:

If you do that, however, you're giving up the ability to use system file
permissions to control what individual users can do.

problem with password authentication

2001-12-04 Thread Ronald Landheer

Hello all,

I've set up a CVS server using pserver (and ssh) as authentication
methods, written a bunch of scripts to take care of the repository setup
etc. and am up to testing. By SSH, everything works impeckably, but as
the people here wet their pants when they see a command line, I have to
set pserver up too, because the GUI they want to use doesn't understand
SSH.. (they pay me for fixing non-existent problems, like I said
before).
pserver doesn't seem to want me to log in with the correct password.

I'm using RedHat 7.2 with xinetd cvspserver settings as follows:

-- BEGIN /etc/xinetd.d/cvspserver --
service cvspserver
{
socket_type = stream
wait= no
user= root
server  = /usr/bin/cvs
server_args

= -f --allow-root=/home/cvs-repository/cvs-admin --allow-root=/home/cvs-repo
sitory/cvs-bo --allow-root=/home/cvs-repository/cvs-opentv pserver
}
-- END /etc/xinetd.d/cvspserver --
CVS server version is 1.10.8-8 (not the newest, I know, but it comes
with RedHat - I'll upgrate later, if it's useful)

When I run the following command,
"cvs -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/cvs-repository/cvs-otv login"
cvs-test being a fully set-up account, directory permission on all
directories below and including /home/cvs-repository/cvs-otv/CVSROOT set to
777 and the same username/password combination working for a shell login on
the same system (home being /home/cvs-repository), I get the following
response:

(Logging in to [EMAIL PROTECTED])
CVS password:
cvs login: authorization failed: server cvs.minisat.net rejected access to
/home
/cvs-repository/cvs-otv for user cvs-test

The password is OK - I am 100% sure of it.
Here's the entry from /home/cvs-repository/cvs-otv/CVSROOT/passwd for
cvs-test:
cvs-test:IAyKxbt6/kXf2:cvs-test

cvs-test is a user on the system, ofcourse.
The garbage between the colons is the output of a script call cvs-cryptout,
which looks like this:
-- BEGIN cvs-cryptout --
#!/usr/bin/perl

srand (time());
my $randletter = "(int (rand (26)) + (int (rand (1) + .5) % 2 ? 65 : 97))";
my $salt = sprintf ("%c%c", eval $randletter, eval $randletter);
my $plaintext = shift;
my $crypttext = crypt ($plaintext, $salt);

print "${crypttext}\n";
--- END cvs-cryptout ---
Now, I'm wondering if this script is OK - mostly because I'm not the one
that wrote it, and I don't quite remember where I got it from, but it looks
OK to me - take the same salt, you should get the same encrypted thing with
the same password, right?

BTW: same thing happens when I remove cvs-test from the /.../CVSROOT/passwd
file (it should look for the UNIX user then, right?
Using same password there)..

Hope someone here can help..

Ronald

Different kind of lock file -- that's really the new RCS file (which
acts as a lock for RCS, not CVS). You don't have write permission in
that repository directory so you can't commit changes.

You need to set the permissions on the repository directories; see:

If all your users are in the same group, you probably want to set the
group-id of all the files and directories in your repository to that
group. If new files and directories get their group-id from the
creating process instead of the parent directory on your system, you can
probably fix that by setting the set-group-id (SGID) bit on all of the
directories in your repository (chmod g+s). If you want to allow
read-only access to some directories, you will have to set LockDir in
your CVSROOT/config file to a world-writable directory so that read-only
users can still create lock files.

There has been a patch posted here to add a "cvs ls" command. Adding it

show_tags.pl:

#!/usr/bin/perl -w

my $Flag = 0;
while( <> )
{
  $Flag = 1 and next if( /symbolic names:/ );
  if( $Flag )
  {
 if( ! /^\s+(\S+):/ )
 {
$Flag = 0;
next;
 }
 $Tag{$1} = 1;
  }
}
map{ print "$_\n"; } (sort keys %Tag);

Then:
cvs rlog  | perl show_tags.pl

Note that cvs rlog will only work with cvs 1.11.1.p1.

conserve filedate

2001-12-04 Thread Sven Schäfer

Hi,
I am searching for a possiblity to conserve the creation date of a
specific file, that is put in the repository. This date should be
restored when checking out the working copy of that file, but the
working copy always gets the actual date... :( I am using NT4 on the
server and also on the clients. Is there any solution to that?

   TIA

  Sven

I've tried to do that, but tools beyond my control restrict me; the
working directory needs to have a certain structure. No other answers?
