Re: problem with pserver

2002-04-09 Thread Brian Poynor

Are you sure you restarted xinetd? It usually restarts with SIGUSR2,
but check the man page for your specific version.

If xinetd isn't opening the port, it should print or log an error
message when it restarts--watch for that.

Knowing which OS/version you're using might help one of us pinpoint
the problem if that doesn't help.

Ampersand module question

2002-04-09 Thread Jay Glanville

I have a question concerning ampersand modules, and I'm hoping someone here
can help me.

When a module has an ampersand module as part of it's definition, the
ampersand module gets included in the root of the other module. My questio
is: is there a way to have the ampersand module included in a subdirectory?

For example, if my modules file looks something like this:
   amp1  amp1
   amp2  amp2
   mod  &1 &2
then when I do a:
   cvs co mod
I get a directory structure that looks like this:
   mod
   mod/amp1
   mod/amp2

Now, is there a way to say that module amp1 should be included in module mod
and be placed in a directory called tools. For example, when I do a
checkout of module mod, I get the following directories:
  mod
  mod/tools/amp1
  mod/amp2

Is this possible?

Thanks,

JDG

For
the server see:
    http://www.devguy.com/fp/cfgmgmt/cvs/cvs_admin_nt.htm#install

For
the client see:
    http://www.devguy.com/fp/cfgmgmt/tools/install.htm

Also, you should consult the CVSNT ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and CVS GUI ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) lists if your primary
concern is CVS on the Windows platform.

About conflicts while merging

2002-04-09 Thread Johnny John

Folks-

Frequently, I work on a branch and then merge as follows (assume my project
is called testProj, and my branch is called Old_branch)

- cvs co testProj
- cvs update -j Root_Of_Old_branch -j Old_branch
- Work on resolving conflicts
- Check in

For the most part, conflicts have occurred as expected, however,
occasionally I notice that conflicts are generated for certain files even
though there have been *no* changes between the root of the branch
(Root_Of_Old_branch) and the tip of the main trunk (testProj).

Any thoughts why? Any summaries of the algorithm used by CVS to generate
conflicts?

thanks,
-Johnny.

Segmentation Fault (was Re: CVS sticky information ignored on import)

2002-04-09 Thread Hamish Allan

Thanks Greg.

> sandbox) -- i.e. it does not do anything special.
>
> Or rather it only works by virtue of the fact that by default it'll

Ah, the tantalising 'by default'... I was hoping there would be some
way to persuade CVS to use the sticky data from the administrative
"CVS" sub-directories for the import. After all, the command does take
kflags and release tags as arguments!

I have ended up using the following instead:

find . -name Entries | xargs grep "/-kb/" \
  | sed -e "s|CVS/Entries:/||" -e "s|/[^/]*/[^/]*/-kb/.*||" \
  | xargs cvs -d $CVSROOT admin -kb

Actually that's not true, because if there are any files marked -kb in
the sandbox which are not imported because they're on the default CVS
ignore list, the admin command SIG_SEGVs.

Hence I've copied this to the gnu.cvs.bug list; if anyone is
interested, I can give you the exact script I'm running and the
sandbox source tree I'm running it on (which is
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/releases/mozilla0.9.8/src/mozilla-source-0.9.8.tar.bz2
BTW).

For archive purposes, if anyone else is trying to do the same thing I
circumvented the segfault problem by creating an 'ignore' list from
the original import (| grep "^I " | grep -v "CVS$" >> $CVSIGNORELIST)
and then

for i in $(find . -name Entries | xargs grep "/-kb/" \
  | sed -e "s|CVS/Entries:/||" -e "s|/[^/]*/[^/]*/-kb/.*||");
  do grep $i $CVSIGNORELIST || cvs -d $CVSROOT admin -kb $i; done

If anyone can think of a better way to determine which files not to
admin (e.g., using an exit code from cvs to determine whether the file
is in the repository) I'd love to know.

thanks,
Hamish

p.s.
> Unless you're managing third-party sources you shouldn't use "cvs import".

Unfortunately that's what I'm doing!

Well... mozilla uses CVS, and whatever I used I'd need to
differentiate between text and binary files.

Unless the '/cvs_repository' in $CVSROOT is '/home/cvs/prj', your

.cvsrc files

2002-04-09 Thread Jason Frisvold
Title: .cvsrc files

Is there a way to enable a user to commit files to a repository without a .cvsrc file?  I have a script that I use to commit router backup files to a cvs repository.  I want to be able to run this via a “fake” user..  The user has no home directory, nor does it have a shell.  So, I need to specify everything as a command line…

The errors I’m getting when trying to do this are :

cvs [checkout aborted]: can't chdir(/home/script): No such file or directory

cvs add: /tmp/Routers/10.7.0.1.config added independently by second party

cvs commit: Up-to-date check failed for `/tmp/Routers/10.7.0.1.config'

cvs [commit aborted]: correct above errors first!

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Group permissions to branches

2002-04-09 Thread Danial Islam

I'm not sure if I posted this already, but here goes again:

In my repository I have set up a main trunk with two branches coming out
of it, e.g. Branch A and
Branch B.Is it possible to restrict Branch A to a certain group of
users, and Branch B to another group of users? How would this be done
in UNIX?

How would I modify the CVSROOT/passwd file to accomodate this? Right now
my passwd file currently has [unix ID]:[encoded password] for each user.

Any help would really, really be appreciated!

Here's a section of a perl script I wrote that allows user nobody to
perform checkouts to /tmp.

sub _cvsLogin {
  my $target = shift;
  my $workDir = $target->workdir();
  my $repository= $target->repository();
  my $cmd = "export CVS_PASSFILE=$workDir/.cvspass; cvs -d $repository login";
  my @input = ( $target->userpw() );
  my ($i,$j) = &logTick( $cmd, $target->buildlog(), \@input, 0);
}

Basically I'm telling cvs to put the .cvspass file in /tmp instead of ~,
since user nobody as a ~ default of / and no rights to use it.

  export CVS_PASSFILE=/tmp/.cvspass

I am able to do cvs login, checkout, update, and tag without a .cvsrc file.
I haven't tried to code up a commit routine, but if tag will work, I think
commit will also. (My code is tested with repositories that use pserver and
local access.)

Re: Group permissions to branches

2002-04-09 Thread Brian Poynor

You can't really do this with the CVSROOT/passwd file. But if you are
primarily concerned about who can commit to Branch A and Branch B (as
opposed to checkout), you can implement that using CVSROOT/commitinfo.

(I answered a similar request earlier, and discounted the option of
using an alternate directory for lock files. This is one of the
primary reasons why. You cannot use unix permissions to govern which
branch a user can work on, which is a fundamental need in my
experience. I believe this is the only mechanism in CVS for this.)

Your commitinfo script can examing the CVS/Tag file. It's the trunk
(mainline) if it doesn't exist, or doesn't have "T" as the first
character in it, otherwise the branch name follows the "T". It is more
work, but also more technically correct to examine the tag value in
the CVS/Entries or CVS/Entries.Log file for each file being committed
instead, since it is possible for a user to update a file from a
different branch into her tree and commit it. The CVS/Tag doesn't
necessarily reflect the branch of every file in the directory.

An additional thing I check that all the files being committed are in
the same branch, since committing to two different branches at once is
almost always a result of user error, and it can be painful to
correct. I figure they can commit twice if that is their intent.

Once you know the branch of the file, you can check that the user is
allowed to commit to that branch using a database of your own design
(could be as simple as a text file with usernames for each branch).

Just make sure that when your commitinfo scripts disallow a commit,
they print a very clear error message to STDOUT. This will save you
and your cvs users a lot of guesswork later.

Thanks a lot for the reply. Yes, I did notice the CVS/Tag file before, and I
wrote a simple shell script with commitinfo and checkoutlist. But you are
right that CVS/Entries should be checked instead. I don't know how to do
this with a shell script, and I don't know Perl either.

Here is my shell script, attached. Perhaps you know how I can fix it up, or
maybe I can have a look at your code?

It takes a lot of work to do in shell, but fairly easy in Perl. Might
be worth your time learning Perl or Python, if you do this sort of
thing much.

> Here is my shell script, attached. Perhaps you know how I can fix it up, or
> maybe I can have a look at your code?

In Perl, you can do something like (extracted from a much more
complicated script, not tested as-is):

# read the entries branch info into a hash

foreach $entries ("CVS/Entries", "CVS/Entries.Log") {
if (open FILE, $entries) {
while () {
   chop;
   ($file, $branch) = (split '/')[1,5];
   $branch = 'Trunk' unless $branch =~ s/^T//;
   $branches{$file} = $branch;
}
close FILE;
}
}

# use the branch of the first committed file as a reference
# make sure all files are on the same branch

# given: @files is a list of files being committed in this dir

$branch = $branches{shift @files};

foreach (@files) {
if ($branches{$_} ne $branch) {
print STDERR
"\n",
"You must commit to a single branch in each commit.\n",
"Attempt to commit to both $branch and $branches{$_}\n\n";
exit 1;
}
}

# check if the user is able to commit to this branch
# keep a list of usernames in a file named "$CVSROOT/writers-$branch"

if (open FILE, "$ENV{CVSROOT}/writers-$branch") {
$user = getpwuid $<;
$found = 0;
while () {
/^$user\b/o and found = 1, last;
}
close FILE;
unless ($found) {
if ($branch eq "Trunk") {
print STDERR
"\n",
"You are not allowed to commit to the Trunk\n\n";
} else {
print STDERR
"\n",
"You are not allowed to commit to branch $branch\n\n";
}
exit 1;
}
}

Hope this helps.

The -d option renames the working directory:

| amp1 -d mod/tools/amp1 amp1
| amp2 amp2
| mod  &1 &2

Module options are described in

Moderation in effect

Good news.

I received the requisite password earlier this afternoon, and
have entered and reconfigured the Mailman Posting
requirements. In order to post without moderation, a poster
must be subscribed. I shall moderate in accordance with my
Proposal as supplemented by my Proposal reply post earlier
today.

There were 251 queued items awaiting administrator attention.
The earliest dated back to December 2000. I have purged,
unread, these items. This gives me a clean slate from which
to start.

I have configured the Mailman to provide to me daily reminder

a shortcut link on my personal base homepage linkfarm, so that
I can pop on and off during the day, to manage that queue.

It sounds to me as though you have a problem with your
$CVSROOT/CVSROOT/val-tags file.

You may wish to move it aside and see if that fixes your problem.
(The file is just a cache of tags available in your repository and
actually removing it would not be a problem, but moving it out of the
way may let you see if it fixes the problem and leave you something to
look at to figure out how it got broken in the first place.

Enjoy!

Your CVSROOT/val-tags file has become corrupted. Each line in that file
should contain a valid tag name followed by a space and the letter "y".
If you check your file, you will find at least two lines that are
missing the tag name. You can either delete just those lines, or you
can delete the whole file -- it's just a cache that CVS will recreate as
needed.

CVS and /tmp

2002-04-09 Thread Wade Williams

In using a cvs server located on Unix, we've run into problems because
/tmp is full.

We're trying to redirect the temporary files until we can add some more
space to /tmp.

1) Am I correct in that passing the -T parameter (or setting TMPDIR)
from the client with a absolute path to the directory on the server
where we want the temp files stored will solve the problem? Or does
TMPDIR need to be set in my user account's environment on the server?
(we're using ssh)

2) If it needs to be set in client, can someone tell me where to set it
in WinCVS?

Thanks,

Wade

cvs commit problem

2002-04-09 Thread Joss, Werner 3936 S-RD-MP2

Hi all,
I'm currently trying to get my cvs pserver running on redhat 7.2.
I've managed to get it working partly by setting up xinetd as described
in the faq-o-matic.
so far, I can connect to cvs, also checkout modules, but if I try to commit
changes, I get the following error:

cannot create_adm_p /tmp/cvs-serv13750/CVI/MDAQ
Permission denied
cvs commit: saving log message in /tmp/cvsiIyJXt

anyone knows what to do ?
(of course, /tmp is writeable by anyone on the server as well as the client
machine...)

thanks
Werner

Re: Strange message from CVS...

2002-04-09 Thread Brian Poynor

Note that if you work with *big* CVS trees, deleting the val-tags file
can make checkouts based on tags (including branch tags) take a long
time. (By big I mean hundreds of directories, thousands of files.)

We've found that adding new tags to val-tags before running checkouts
or merges using them saves a lot of time.

Does anyone know why cvs doesn't do that by default? Or the reason
val-tags exists in the first place?

thanks,
-Brian
