Impact of changing back "altnamespace"

2018-03-02 Thread Tom Plancon

Hello,

A week or so back I posted here about issues I was having with
cyrus-imapd 2.3 after changing the "altnamespace" variable in imapd.conf
to "yes" in order to set up shared mailboxes. It threw a monkey wrench
into my server and caused a lot of problems for a couple of days Things
have settled down but still some residual problems for users in their
email clients, e.g. Inbox contents disappears or does not show recent
mail. Also deleting hangs for a long time.

I'm considering changing "altnamespace" back to "no" hoping it will
clear up those issues.

Any thoughts as to what I can expect if I do this? All input is appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: Shared folder fiasco

2018-02-26 Thread Tom Plancon

ellie,

Thank you for the response.

Upon further investigation I am running cyrus-imapd 2.3. Don't know
where/how I saw 2.6!

It is a Thunderbird problem. I had removed Tbird and what I thought was
the profile info, but it appears Tbird stores profile data in two
locations on Win 10: C:/users/[name]/appdata/roaming/Thunderbird and
C:/users/[name]/appdata/low/Thunderbird. Removing both of those
directories and re-installing tbird then re-creating the user's account
cleaned everything up and the inbox started showing new incoming mail.

Thanks again for the hints! Everything is almost back to normal, but
still no functioning "shared" folder.

Shared folder fiasco

2018-02-22 Thread Tom Plancon

Hi folks,

I'm running an email server for 40 users on cyrus-imad 2.6 on CentOS 6,
with postfix 2.2.6. Our email client is Thunderbird. I tried to set up a
shared mailbox using a howto found here:
http://wiki.linuxwall.info/doku.php/en:ressources:dossiers:cyrus:shared_mailbox.
Based on that info, I set altnamespace to yes in imapd.conf, and that
caused problems for the Tbird clients; it acted as though it had never
seen the user's mailboxes before and needed to reload all of the
existing email headers in all folders!  That was especially true for the
Sent folder which Tbird could not find for a while and kept throwing
errors, although it sent the email. Also the display of the users Inbox
changed in the Tbird folder listings to appear as a "subscribed" folder
rather than the user's INBOX.

After about 36 hours things settled down and is now behaving normally
for most users, however I have 2 users that cannot see the contents of
their INBOX. The email is there, and they are receiving normally, but
just not visible in Tbird. All other subfolders are there and the
contents visible.

I don't see anything unusual in maillog for the 2 users. I've tried
completely removing their Thunderbird installation then reinstalling,
inbox contents appears initially then disappears! Any thoughts as to
what's to do here are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hello,

Thanks for the response.
When I run reconstruct -rf mailbox the response is usage: reconstruct

Look for the binary 'reconstruct' on your system. On a
Fedora/RedHat/CentOS system it might be here:

/usr/lib/cyrus-imapd/reconstruct

You should run this as the cyrus user. For example, as root do this:
$ su cyrus -c /usr/lib/cyrus-imapd/reconstruct -r -f user.USER

If you don't run the command as the syruc user, the perms on the
files (if any) it creates will be wrong.

2. Delete /var/lib/imap/deliver.db
3. Delete the contents of /var/lib/imap/db/
4. Start Cyrus

deliver.db contains (mainly) transient data about messages. If you
delete it, you may get a repeated message from anyone using a vacation
responder, but otherwise there are no negative consequences.

 Cool.

The output of the SELECT for the user who is having the biggest
issue with this is extensive, so I've attached it as a text file. I
do see the $Label1, $Label2, etc. as you said but also a lot of
text which I assume are the tags the user has made.

The question is, other than the excessive use of tags, is there
anything else wrong with this output?

The output is fine - BUT, here's the problem. Cyrus has a hard limit
of 128 user flags per mailbox, and they're not recyclable. Once
you have created that many flags, you're stuck - you can't create any
 more.

If that user is creating more in Thunderbird, it's probably only
storing them locally and failing to upload them to the server - which
is probably only working by accident and not how it's designed to work.

 What a mess!

The only solution I can offer for now is use fewer tags. To clean
them out, you can create a new empty folder and copy the messages
across. That works for everything other than INBOX. For INBOX it's
harder - you pretty much need to create a new folder, copy the messages
into it, delete the cyrus.header file for the INBOX and reconstruct,
then copy the messages back. Ouch.

Bron ( that's assuming most of these tags were used in the past, but are
not on any existing messages )

Possibly a Cyrus thing. Is there anything in syslog? It sounds
like you're losing the cyrus.header files, which is where the tag

 Bron,
Thanks for the reply. Yes I am using 2.3.16!
I believe all of the Cyrus logging is into /var/log/maillog. I

 IOERROR is a good start.

The only IOERROR I see is related to fstating sieve script for some

No, that's not likely to be it.

What's the output when you select the mailbox?

The FLAGS and PERMANENTFLAGS responses will tell you if the
mailbox has forgotten about the flags, or if they've been cleared
 by something.

I expect from Thunderbird you will see things like $Label1, $Label2,
 etc.

Another possibility is some bogus client sending STORE FLAGS rather
than STORE +FLAGS when it wants to set something.

 Bron.

Bron,
Now I'm really in over my head. Not familiar with select command. That
does not appear to be in the cyradm commands. How would I get to that?

Via IMAP. If you can get Thunderbird to show you a protocol trace you'll
definitely get one there.

Otherwise:

telnet $server 143
. login $username $password
. select inbox
. logout

Should do just fine. It will need to be done as a user who has the problem.

You can also inspect the cyrus.header file for that user directly, but it's
trickier to read than the output of SELECT.

Repeating emails

2009-11-03 Thread Tom Plancon
Title: myEMAILsignature

Hello all,

Not sure if this is the place to ask this, just trying to track it
down. I'm running Cyrus 2.2.12 with Postfix 2.2.2 for only 45 users.
Every once in a while, but much more recently, users are receiving
emails sent a few days ago - again. The recent repeat emails were all
from users on our network sent to all users on our network. The headers
appear like regular, legit emails. Any thoughts as to what could be
going on or where to begin looking.

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Selective sieve service

2007-05-10 Thread Tom Plancon

Hello,

I've been trying to utilize sieve functionality on our server: Cyrus
2.2.12 on FC4, and it is a real head scratcher! I've taken to the sieve
extension in Thunderbird and the Avelsieve plugin to Squirrelmail. Both
of these appear to work in creating sieve scripts properly placed and
activated, but the only function I can get to work is "fileinto"!
Attempts at "reject" and "vacation" did nothing but accept the email
normally into the inbox. Checking the maillog I see "sieve runtime
error for user.reject: sendmail terminated normally"

Any help here, or where to get a good sieve HOWTO is greatly
appreciated! Thanks.

Newbie maillog errors

2006-12-13 Thread Tom Plancon
Hello,

I've sort of inherited managing a cyrus 2.2.12 email server with postfix
on a FC4 linux box. Generally things run smoothly, but I'm still getting
up to speed and I see some errors regularly appearing in the maillog.
The two most frequent are:

Dec 13 13:16:41 pelican imap[6609]: SQUAT failed to open index file
Dec 13 13:16:41 pelican imap[6609]: SQUAT failed

And

Dec 13 13:18:14 pelican lmtpunix[6857]: IOERROR: fstating sieve script
/var/lib/imap/sieve/x/xuser/defaultbc: No such file or directory

The last error is reported for all imap users at various times. I know
the imap partition is set as /home/imap, which I understand is not the
default install location. Any light anyone can shed on what the errors
mean and if I should take steps to correct is appreciated.

Thanks!
