A few questions as our tech committee is about to meet...
1. Do you allow students to access private email accounts...HotMail,
Yahoo, etc. on school computers, during school hours?
No, we block that with our content filter at the same time Jefferson-scranton
blocked theirs. It eliminated a lot of problems.
2. If not, what is the reasoning?
Personal email use takes up to much time on our network, is to difficult to
patrol and is non-educational. Kids complained that the staff can still do it
and our comeback is that they are adults.
3. If yes what is the reasoning?
4. Do you offer school based email accounts for all high school
students (9-12 or a mixture of) which the school sets up and manages
(such as for classes, online classes, college classes, etc.?
If the counselor request they have a email account for school, then we do allow
it, but they must use a school email account. I have allowed a few students to
use their personal account, but not many.
5. If you do not allow it, do you deal with it by blocking access or
or as part of a user agreement.
It is part of our AUP and we also block access. We do not have the parents
sign the AUP anymore since 99% wanted their children to have access. We have
gone the other way and tell the parents if they do not want their kids on the
internet, we have a form they can sign and then we take them off. The AUP is
also included in the student handbook and we send a update every July to remind
parents and students what is acceptable.
I also inform the parents that are blocking software does a good job but can't
get everything and we don't have the money or time to constantly be watching
what they are doing.
Thanks in advance
