[info-tech] smartboard - electronic white board

2008-05-30 Thread Brad Kruse
We have a teacher here that would like to use one of these next year. We do
not have any in the district.
Can anyone recommend one that is being used now or suggestions? Thanks. I
started looking but so many different models.

I think you should check out the Mimio product. We were quite impressed
with it and it is extremely portable in case this teacher would want to
share. We will be ordering some this summer.

RE: [info-tech] smartboard - electronic white board

2008-05-30 Thread Pearson, Jeremy
Well, to throw another kink in the situation, we went a different way.

Since we already had multimedia rooms setup with a permanent projector and 8'
screen in place, we have started integrating an interactive tablet. We are
using the Qomo RF Tablet, which we are getting from Berg Audio Video for $325
each. We have looked at several versions of the tablets, and choose the Qomo
version.

We went this way for a couple of reasons. One, our maintenance department
would have killed us should we have asked them to remodel the same rooms two
years in a row. Second, as we looked at the Mimio product, which we thought we
would like best, we didn't like standing in front of the screen and blocking
the image. The Mimio would limit the size of our screen, plus would always
display the shadow of me using it as I stood in front using it. We went the
tablet way as it would let the teacher roam around the room, the teacher can
walk up to a student and hand them the tablet and they can use it right from
their desk. Finally, it is a lot more mobile than a Mimio, as you plug in a
USB receiver module and start using it. There is no calibration.

Just thought from Fort Dodge, and how we cheaply added the interactive piece to
the classrooms that we had already done.

RE: [info-tech] smartboard - electronic white board

2008-05-30 Thread Frerichs, Chad
Jeremy,

That's sort of what we thought getting all of our teachers tablet pcs
and wireless projectors. However, most are reluctant to use the
technology as we intended. So, we have rethought the situation and have
decided to try the Mimios knowing full well the limitations you
suggested. We had a salesperson come up and do a day of demos during one
of our PD days and the teachers seemed to prefer the Mimios. As did I
for the very simple reason that they are portable and I hate seeing
technology sit around doing nothing.

That being said, I would like to see one of these tablets you talk about
in action. One of our math teachers won teacher of the year and received
a similar product. She tried it, but did not continue using it.

RE: [info-tech] smartboard - electronic white board

2008-05-30 Thread Henn, Layne
We have 37 smartboards in Sioux City. We have looked at all the other
types and are sticking with the Smart product.
As we use more and more of the Document Cameras, we get farther and
farther away from the interactive whiteboards.
I had a teacher who had both and ended up giving his smartboard to
another teacher because he never used it anymore.
for every smartboard, I can buy 3 Document cameras, or 2 doc. cameras
and a projector.

Well that is kind of what we liked about the Promethean since you had to
use the pen to move the cursor, that way you can place your hand on the
board and it won't move when you tap the board.

[info-tech] recycling

2008-05-30 Thread Jackie Fonley
Is anyone running a recycling trip this summer? I have some stuff I
would be willing to run somewhere for a larger drop--but not sure if
I have enough to make it worth while myself.

Items I am wanting to sell:
Also--I have quite a few Compaq 15 color monitors and some towers.
E-mail me if you want to discuss options. (no they are not flat
screens) Around 5/going on 6 or so years old. All already reformatted.

I also will probably have quite a few of the clamshell laptops which
run OS 9. I thought they were sooo cool when I bought them! Same
thing--shoot me an e-mail.

O-and some zip disk drives. Even stored in the original box.

Have a great summer!

I just called him last week, and he ran up to get my stuff
already. He also said their other truck was in Minnesota, so maybe they
could just swing by. We had 7 pallets of stuff for them. Otherwise, we
will be having another truck towards the end of summer.
