Re: [info-tech] School Surveillance and Security

2008-04-25 Thread Scott Fosseen
The one thing I would recommend if you want to really get into video
surveillance is to work with a video vendor. There are a lot of IP based
solutions that seem like they would be a simple solution but you may be
disappointed with coverage.

Working with a vendor that specializes in this application will be able to
determine the correct camera placement, how many cameras to use, what
lenses, do you need Pan/Tilt/Zoom, backlighting to name a few. A long time
ago I worked in the Alarm industry and worked on several surveillance
systems. Even with my extensive background in that industry I would not
design a video surveillance system without professional help.

The systems installed at Webster City and Jefferson Scranton in my opinion
are very well deployed systems. I would look at having their vendor give
you a quote, or at least work with a "Security" company to help design and
implement any surveillance solution.

We use a dvr system sold by Modern Sound in Ft. Dodge. It is the same system
they use at Rabiner Treatment Center (part of our district). They have over
30 cameras in use there and we have 16. Works for what we need it for.

RE: [info-tech] School Surveillance and Security

2008-04-25 Thread Buenz, Tim
Hi,

We use the same system that Webster City has.

The Panasonic DVR units (WJ-HD316A/500 or WJ-HD309A/500) handle 9 or 16
cameras. We have worked with Todd and Brian ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) at AlphaVideo
in Minneapolis.

The outside fixed cameras (POC484L5) are about $750 ea. and the PTZ's
(POS954DW) with enclosure/mount are $1,955. The DVR units are $2,600-4,100.

RE: [info-tech] School Surveillance and Security

2008-04-25 Thread Brett Johnston
We just purchased a 16 channel PC based system from New Millennium
Technology out of Indianola. It is a networkable system that allows
remote viewing on any machine running XP or 2000. It is also audio
capable. Unit is a little more costly but unlike DVR's if one component
dies it can be replaced as every component is serviceable, verses
throwing away the entire unit. The cameras run 24/7 with compression of
2400/1. It also uses full size 640x480 frames when viewing and images
can be enlarged without pixelating.

The cameras are full color with IR in vandal-proof domes and run at 540
lines of resolution. The unit can store about one month's worth of
video on all 16 cameras.
