Re: [Inkscape-docs] major update to Report Bugs page

2018-08-08 Thread brynn
Ok, since there haven't been any further comments, I've published the Report
Bugs page with the new text.

Thanks for everyone's help!

All best,

Ok, I had forwarded the email thread to Patrick, and he replied to me privately.
(maybe he isn't subscribed to the Docs list, I'm not sure) We're thinking that
unless Martin has some specific use for the side panel, which I (or we) haven't
been able to imagine yet, we'll just go back to the Normal template.

If no other comments or changes, I'll go ahead and replace the current page with
the new one, using Normal template.

Thanks everyone :-)

So "action buttons". I'm not sure how that could work.

For the first section (Before you file a new bug report), there could be a
button to search the bug tracker. But there would not be any way to make a
button for the user to test the bug in a new blank file after resetting prefs.
Plus, if we put them into the bug tracker with the first step, users in a hurry
will never come back and finish reading the page.

For the 2nd section (what the report Must contain) - if there were some kind of
button which would collect the Inkscape version and operating system, that might
work. But I don't know of any way to put that into a button. Not unless it
contains some kind of script that queries the user's system. (which would
probably be blocked with a lot of users' security) And of course there's no way
to "buttonize" writing the description.

Is there something I'm not seeing, still?

Thanks,
brynn

Re: [Inkscape-docs] major update to Report Bugs page

2018-07-28 Thread brynn
Ooh, so you're thinking to put the main steps in the side panel, with
descriptions in the rest of the page?

Or are you thinking about some sort of graphic for each step?

(I can actually imagine a cartoon of nerd with pencil and paper, who sees a bug
crawl across the paper he's drawing on (or maybe a computer screen) who freaks
out, whacks it with a fly swatter, and it ends with the nerd looking all
self-satisfied and happy. And then we would have the text for each step
connected with each frame. I'm certainly no artistbut it would make for a
pretty cool page!)

But that's a lot more work, while we need this new page fairly quickly (since I
realized the Help menu connects directly to it, and it doesn't function properly
in that role, as it is).

Patrick had another idea along that same line. He had suggested the main steps,
and then sort of hiding the descriptions under an expand/contract triangle
button labeled "Details". I guess I would not want stuff hidden, because people
in a hurry won't bother to open it.

But anyway, I'm happy to make the page, as long as it's something I'm capable of
doing. Exactly how it's done is not important to me. The most important thing
is that it's very easy to read, very clear, yet having all the important points.

I would be happy with either the Normal Template (first draft) or Table of
Contents template (2nd draft). I'm not sure how the side panel would be an
improvement, unless I'm just not seeing what Martin is thinking.

I guess at this point, we need some input from Patrick (who has been busy, but
will eventually catch up).

All best,
brynn

There was some kind of problem with the site, during the time I was
working on
the page (when emails had been disabled, because of a suspected security
issue).
A couple of times, I had to try twice to publish, where it didn't go
through the
first time. I don't know if that would be related to the security issue or
notor if that could have erased the edit mode.

Should I go ahead and replace the contents in Edit mode? Or should we
try and
figure out what went wrong first?

Just to make sure I do the right thing, I need to choose Table of
Contents from
the dropdown menu, right? That's what Martin means by "side panel"
isn't it?

Thanks,
brynn

The page seems to be empty right now in edit mode (I was shocked a bit,
when I visited it and it was empty - in published mode, it's still
there, just made a copy, just in case...), but it's using a Normal
template.

What happened? Was the contents lost on changing the template?

Hi Brynn,

The content to the page looks good overall.

CMS wise, the page should use either the Normal Page, or the Sidebar
Page as the template. This is because we can't see for sure what it
will look like with an 'inherit' setting which picks a blank page.

I'd also encourage the use of the sidebar template as it's been very
useful for functional pages where detailed content goes in the main
left side part and action buttons go on the right sidebar to make it
easy to quickly move.

Sorry, that intermediate email that's quoted below never made it into my
inbox...

A page with a side panel can be selected when you select a new template
for the page.

Page > Templates > Side Bar Page

I don't know what Martin meant to put into the side bar.

Might be that changing the template will loose the contents again
(changing back might restore it).
