Re: [IRCA] Old timers question abour 1180
My memories of that time period, are that the big jammer and spy station was Radio Swan on 1160. This was said to be a CIA station on Swan Island with studios in Miami, FL. Is it possible that it's the same people running Radio Marti, but just under a different name? I do have a QSL card for Radio Swan. Willis Nothing in the 1962 or 1963 issues. 1966 issue lists Marathon, Florida (50 kW - 1180 kc) and Sugarloaf, Florida (50 kW - 1040 kc). Neil and Mike, Yes, a good HDTV set has a wonderful pix. You have many more lines of resolution. HDTV is not anyway like HD Radio. HDTV is an improvement where HD Radio is not. Two different animals. Also no one has to buy a HDTV set, if they don't want to. It is like going from a Ford to a Lincoln, so to speak. The Ford will get you from place to place just fine, but the Lincoln has more comfort. I have not bought an HDTV set as yet, but I plan to. I am still looking around. I pay attention to Australian New Zealand changes, but not Chinese for the most part. But I have several QSL'd that are no longer listed in the PAL or WRTH. One main difference are the names. Re: [IRCA] Dump AM IBOC, Move the AM Band, re:HDTV comment
I think that most consumers don't care about audio quality, but they do care about video quality, perhaps because the latter is more noticeable. For example, consumers love MP3 players and their ilk, even though they usually don't provide the ultimate in fidelity, due to factors such as compression and ear buds. As a result, HD radio is a tough sell. But it's tough for them to overlook the difference between SD and HD TV, especially when they're side-by-side in a retailer showroom, or even when it's just an HD set by itself in a friend's house. On the audio side, I also think that consumers value selection above everything, even fidelity. They like MP3 players because they choose the playlist, while sat radio subs are attracted by the variety that the can't get from terrestrial radio. Audio quality is a side issue, if they even think about it all. So again, HD radio is a tough sell. My two favorite AM and FM stations are rim shots. I put up with static crashes, ignition noise and picket fencing because their programming is worth the hassle. Sure, I'd prefer to have them in CD-quality sound, but I'll put up with the weak signals rather than listen to a strong local that plays music that doesn't interest me. For me, the decision about whether to buy an HD radio boils down to multicasting, such as a couple of channels of jazz or classic country, both which currently aren't available in this market. ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://arizona.hard-core-dx.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Thanks all. If got 'hold of George Jacobs yesterday. He was involved in both the original 1180 selection for VOA Marathon and the 'Marti-izing' of the site in '85. He relayed that work began on VOA Marathon in 1962, after the 'Cuban missle crisis.' So that it was on-air in '64 is about right. I recall visiting the site in '84 or so and it looked like something 'temporary' that was made permanent later on. We have other relay stations like that in VOA's network. Does anybody recall the legal/FCC battles that surrounded VOA's selection of 1180kHz? Much like the 530kHz Marti stuff, I'm sure FCC finds itself in a tough position since IBB [ne USIA] is a separate member of IRAC. bw --- On Oct 18, 2006, at 7:11 AM, Russ Edmunds wrote: --- Jim Pogue [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Nothing in the 1962 or 1963 issues. 1966 issue lists Marathon, Florida (50 kW - 1180 kc) and Sugarloaf, Florida (50 kW - 1040 kc). [IRCA] Maybe they'll find some QSL cards that never got delivered
Mailman's death shrouded in mystery of mail he left behind BROOKLINE, Mass. - For 20 years, Alan Gagne delivered mail to a tree- lined neighborhood here - but not all of it. The postal service said Tuesday he tucked away thousands of circulars and hundreds of letters in drawers and closets in his apartment. The authorities discovered the mail Friday when a supervisor, who worried when Gagne did not show up for work, found him dead in his apartment on the same street where he made his rounds in this affluent suburb. The Boston Globe reported the discovery Tuesday. Some of the mail dates from the 1980s, said Robert Cannon, a spokesman for the postal service, and about 90 percent of it was circulars flagged as undeliverable because of an address change. The postal service is trying to deliver the first-class letters and cards, none of which were opened, to their rightful recipients, but is having trouble because the letters are so old. Cannon said officials do not know why Gagne kept the mail, and probably never would. There appeared to be no rhyme or reason as to how, when, or where he took the mail or why he was holding onto it, Cannon said. Stealing mail is a federal offense, but the death voids all charges, he said. It's tragic, unfortunate and bizarre. Gagne, 54, lived on the bottom floor of a yellow duplex on a quiet tree-lined street filled with parents pushing strollers. A bachelor, he moved from an apartment around the corner a few years ago, neighbors said, and apparently took the mail with him. He was occasionally spotted at a nearby coffee shop and the grocery store, but he and his habits were as much of a mystery in life as they are in death. Neighbors said Gagne was somewhat of an enigma, barely looking people in the eye but seemingly obsessed with getting the mail to them properly and on time, leaving them all the more baffled as to how and why he took the mail. When you went away on vacation he would leave photocopied notes in his unusual, hard-to-read scrawl that you should check your mail carefully because there might be a problem, said Jonathan Sandler, 35, who was walking by Gagne's Linden Street apartment with his wife and 20-month-old son. He said Gagne was the best, most thorough mailman he had ever had. Al was the mail. Gagne was, by many accounts, socially awkward and had problems striking up even casual conversations. He was often heard mumbling to himself along the route and complained about how heavy the mailbag was. Being social was extremely difficult for him, said Jeff Kline, who lives on the street. He would answer if I spoke to him, but he wouldn't strike up a conversation. It was even difficult to tip him, Kline added. I would sort of press a twenty into his hand and he'd look away. It was very hard for him to look you in the eye. Rebecca Scudiere, 25, a medical student who lives in the street's only large apartment building, said she and her roommates often found their mail was late and, Thursday, received a large bundle of unsorted mail. She said she had been creeped out by a conversation with Gagne, whom she saw every day but only acknowledged her once. I was getting my mail at the same time he came and he said, Who's your mail from, your boyfriend? I'd take you out,' she said. Aside from that he was never friendly. Neighbors said they are more sad than angry about the situation. I should be rightfully angry, but I'm surprised. I'd be surprised if anything of value was taken, Kline said. I find myself being much more sad that he could have done this and his life had to be that way than mad that he took circulars. ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://arizona.hard-core-dx.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

kevin redding wrote: Also no one has to buy a HDTV set, if they don't want to. It This is incorrect Pat. February 17, 2009 you will have to have a HDTV to see TV. Its a drop dead date for analog as mandated by Congress through statute law. It is HD RADIO that is not mandated and no one has to buy a digital radio. I am sure as soon as congress notices their oversight, they will mandate it and hose DXers. Bullpuckey, on two accounts. First off, nobody has to have an HDTV set to see TV. HDTV is one of (actually, several of) the display options in the DTV standard. I already have a DTV tuner here, but I don't have an HDTV display and probably won't until next year at the earliest. They are not the same thing, and we only add to the confusion by conflating them. Second, I fully expect that on February 18, 2009, I'll still be using all but one of the (analog, standard-def) TV sets in my house. They're all hooked up to cable, and analog cable won't be going away on 2/17/09, nor will the analog outputs of DirecTV and Dish Network receivers. Long before that, the 1978-vintage 12 B/W TV in the kitchen, which is the only set that's still strictly off-air, will have been replaced, probably by a similar-sized LCD set. By the end of this year, all such sets will be required to include an ATSC (DTV) tuner, so even if I don't hook it up to cable (which I probably will end up doing, at my wife's behest), it will fly through the deadline with no issues. As for Russ' assertion that HDTV sets are still overpriced, I've been pricing them out, and if I wanted to, I could replace the 27 analog Sony in my family room with a 26 16:9 HD LCD, ATSC tuner and all, for as little as $699 right now. Adjusting for inflation, that's barely more than I paid for the analog set in 1998. s ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://arizona.hard-core-dx.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com
[IRCA] East Coast TA's
Last night (Oct 17-18) was my best night for Europeans and Middle East stations in a long time, with audio on 567, 1134, 1521 and 594. I didn't hear anything on 1035, 1215 or 1377, but it was a good night as I finally added Saudi Arabia to my log- my 23rd MW country. St Kitts has been a regular on 555 and I did get some noise on 535 (Granada). My local channels, like 580 and 630 were nothing but mush, with WHP and WMAL weaker than normal. Bullpuckey, on two accounts. Heh When it comes to OTA TV, analog is dead 2/17/09. Thus sayeth the government. You can use the monitor for all kinds of stuff, just you won't be using it for OTA directly without some sort of converter. As for Russ' assertion that HDTV sets are still overpriced, I've been pricing them out, and if I wanted to, I could replace the 27 analog Sony in my family room with a 26 16:9 HD LCD, ATSC tuner and all, for as little as $699 right now. I bought a 30 Sanyo Set with ATSC and NTSC for $450. Thats reasonable. They aren't overpriced any more. My preference would have been some analog backwardsly compatible method, but that is water under the bridge. All I can say is that I get further DX reception via GW and with a clearer picture with DTV than analog. I many never see another station via Es but for GW DTV is vastly superior. [IRCA] Results of WNJC 1360 DX Test
QSL's for this test have been electronically sent and mailed via US Postal Service on 10/18/2006. If you do not receive your QSL in a timely manner, please send an e-mail directly to me: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Our thanks to Joe Miller, noted DX'er who designed the QSL card for this event. RESULTS OF WNJC 1360khz DX Test WNJC 1360khz, Vineland, NJ Test Date: October 1st, 2006 4KW, Non-Directional Pattern Again, our special thanks to John Duke Hamann for arranging this test! You put New Jersey into the log books of quite a few DX'ers! First report of the test arrived only minutes after it started. Bob Antoniuk of Clifton, NJ who logged not only WNJC, but also the WODI 1230khz test from Brookneal, VA (which stated at the same time) Both were pulled in on his stock Sony 2010. Other reports followed including Russ Johnson of Lexington, NC, Les Rayburn of Helena, AL (NJ #1), and Bert New of Watkinsville, GA. Bert reported this as the first logging of a Garden State station for him as well. Rene Tetro logged the test from his shack in Lansdale, PA, as did Joe Miller in Troy, Michigan. Our neighbors to the North also heard the test signals with Jerry Coatsworth of Merlin, Ontario, Canada reporting reception of both WNJC and WODI. Other lucky DX'ers included Bill Dvorak of Madison, WI, Jim Pogue of Memphis, TN, and J.D. Stephens of Hampton Cove, Alabama. Vermont was added to the list of states receiving the test with a successful report from Steve Howe in St. Albans. Rick Shaftan of NW New Jersey reported the test, Blowing through his local. Others in the Northeast also pulled in this regional test, including Paul Walker, Jr in Dover, NH who's helped set up quite a few tests lately.and DX'er Roy Barstow (Old Roy) who caught WNJC about equal to WDRC. Richard Line of Sterling Heights, MI used a Drake R8B and a N/S 100 foot wire to pull the test in, while Curt Degan relied on his trusty Ten Tec RX-320D and an LF Engineering active whip to log this one from Boca Raton, FL. Another Drake owner, Dave Hochfelder of Highland Park, NJ used a Kiwa Loop antenna to log this, while Willis Monk used the classic Drake R4-C and a longwire to snag the test from his home in Old Fort, Tennessee. Others hearing the test were John J. Rieger, of South Milwaukee,WI, Bill Bergadano of Colts Neck, NJ, and Greg Harris of Park Forest, IL. The test represented the first logging of New Jersey for many, including Greg Myers of Largo, FL. He reported the stations easily heard despite a strong het on 1359 which was reported by many. Also success in their attempts were Brett Saylor of Central PA, Dave Pyatt of Burlington, Ontario, and Carl Mann of Omaha, NE. No surprise that the test was heard by Barry McLarnon of Ottawa. WNJC is a semi-local, and past tests have proven that Barry can hear a pin drop on a graveyard station 2000 miles away! And (YAWN) Neil Kazaross KAZ pulled them in as well from his shack in Barrington, IL. For this pair, DX Tests amount to training wheels. A. McKay of Ontario, Canada logged the test using a DX-394 receiver and a 50 foot wire, while Allan Loudell used a YB-400 with only it's internal antenna to pull the test in from Delaware. Others logging the test included Gerry Bishop of Niceville, FL, Tom Jasinski of Shorewood, IL, and Tim Noonan of Oak Creek, WI. Reports flowed in from folks like Steve Francis of Alcoa, TN, Larry Russell of Flushing, MI, and Phillip Chiello of Elm Grove, WI. The mail brought reports from R.C. Watts of Louisville, KY, and William Wilkins of Springfield, MO. That brings the totals to 16 states that logged the test, and some folks in Canada too! Great way to start the DX Season! Most unusual was the complete lack of negative reports this time around, though we're sure that someone out West must have tried for the test without success. SOAPBOX Great copy on the WNJC DX test here in North Carolina. The Morse Code was easy to read. Kudos for the various tones and signals. Got a great recording of it. -Russ Johnson, Lexington, NC My first NJ station! Thanks to all those involved for making it happen. -Bert New, Watkinsville, GA Surprised to get both these Northeasterners [WNJC WODI] with the A index at 15. -J.D. Stephens, Hampton Cove, AL Thanks very much for coordinating this test! The sweep tones and Morse IDs came through great. Even though WNJC is close, I haven't heard them at night before, so thanks for running the test. -Dave Hochfelder, Highland Park, NJ The sweep tones and tone mod CW cut through the interference. My receiver is an Icom R75. My antenna is a homebrew hula hoop loop coax fed to a MFJ956 ATU. [IRCA] WODI 1230khz Brookneal, VA DX Test Results (SO FAR!)
RESULTS OF WNJC 1360khz DX Test WODI 1230khz Brookneal, VA Test Date: October 1st, 2006--?? 1KW, Non-Directional Pattern Our special thanks to Tony DeNicola and Dave Marthouse for running this unique test. They've arranged for each Saturday night from Midnight local until 00:05AM to run a five minute DX test with sweep tones, Morse Code ID's, etc. So far, it's been widely heard. This are the results as of 10/18/06.but remember, it's not too late to log this one! They'll be back on the air this Saturday night! Tune in! The first night of this unique DX Test coincided with the WNJC Test, with many DX'ers attempting (and succeeding) to log both stations within minutes of each others. Russ Johnson in Lexington, NC was the first to pull off this DX Double, reporting WODI's Morse Code signals, weak but readable. Next up was Bob Antoniuk of Clifton, NJ, who copied both stations on his stock Sony 2010 using just the internal antenna! Also logging the first week of the WODI test was Bert New of Watkinsville, GA, Jerry Coatsworth of Merlin, Ontario, Canada, J.D. Stephens in Hampton Cove, AL, and Steve Howe of St. Albans, VT. Rich Line of Sterling Heights, MI used a Drake R8B with a 100' N/S wire to pull in the test, while Brett Saylor used his Icom R-75 and Ten Tec RX-320 with a sloper antenna to turn the trick. Others hearing the test included Tom Jansinski of Shorewood, IL, and Joe Miller of Troy, MI. This was the 334th MW station that Joe has logged in his short career on the broadcast band. Larry Russell of Flushing, MI pulled the test in using a Radio Shack DX-400 and got it on tape. Nice catch, Larry! Saul Chernos actually heard the test from his car radio in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Saul hears more DX on his car radio than I do with a shack full of gear! Barry McLarnon continues to hear pins drop from his home in Ottawa, Ontario. It must be something in the water up there. Barry logged the test but didn't need it, having heard WODI before. Ken Wilson in Central, KY reported the test easy copy there on his JRC NRD545 Wellbrook 2 loop K9AY. Chris in Taylors, SC needed only a Sony Walkman to log the test through interference from WYSL. Another success story came in from Jim Pursel using his ICOM IC-T90A handheld and a homebrew antenna. His home is in Lancaster, PA. So far, that means this test has been logged in 15 states and Canada! But alas, some of us have not (YET!) been so successful in logging the tests. I appear to be just inside or outside the skip zone of WODI here in Central Alabama. I've heard not a trace of them so far. Likewise, Neil Kazaross reports no joy using his famous beverage on the ground (BOG) antennas either. Others who have so far been disappointed include Wade Smith of New Brunswick, Brandon Jordan, the hard working editor of the DXTESTS.INFO web site was rewarded yet for his efforts either, loved his comment though-Maybe next week. How many DX tests can you say that about? Dennis in Vancouver, WA tried all his tricks including Quantum Phasers, a EWE antenna and even a KAZ special with no luck. Don't feel lonely Dave, I'm trying virtually the same guns here with no luck. Keep trying for this test, and we'll update all the results again in a few weeks. SOAPBOX Got them both here just after midnight local. Sweep tones and definitive Morse IDs on my 2010 with stock antenna. Thanks guys! -Bob Antoniuk, Clifton NJ I managed to hear the Morse Code and Sweep tones of the WODI DX Test this week. So I am happy to report this as my 334th MW station logged. -Joe Miller, Troy, MI In downtown Toronto ON in the car. Didn't have to go too far mobile - in front of my house was good enough. Re: [IRCA] Dump AM IBOC, Move the AM Band, re:HDTV comment
Scott, You are absolutely right. Direct Dish already use digital, but it is converted to analog to your set. The same is true for all of my Mpeg 4DTV stuff for the big dish. Unless you are watching OTA in 2009 (If they don't move the date), you will not have to change one thing. Nothing. If you are on cable, you wont have to change either. It is only OTA (over the air). I think the majority of viewers are either on cable, Direct TV or Dish anyway. [IRCA] OT: QSL first
Last week I decided to DX the 10-meter band Ham beacons for a little variety. I've only heard two and sent reports to both. Today I received a card from WA6APQ in Long Beach, my first one. I guess some count these as Utility stations but I will keep them in a separate notebook. I have one Ham QSL so it's a thin notebook. I also received a notice that I have a registered envelope from the Armada de Chile so maybe a QSL from CBV. I'll pick it up tomorrow.
