Re: [IRCA] [am] Current antenna projects

2006-12-13 Thread Neil Kazaross
Your zigzag BOG idea is interesting, but I fear it will basically be a bunch
of little BOGs in series and have poor directivity. I haven't read good
things about zigzagged Bev-type antennas.

However, if I had told people 6 years ago that I was going to replace my
elevated 600 foot mini-Bevs (full Bevs at very high end) with BOGs many
would have had my scheduled for a lobotomy.

It is via experimentation that we learn new things in this hobby where much
can still be a "black art". I don't think anything will be gained by
zigzagging, but it is worth a try and I will mention that even a 200 ft BOG
is decent for the very high end of BCB.

Chris,

If you can hear 1620 WDHP at 2200, try dropping down to 780 for ZBVI out of
Tortola, BVI. It's 10kW N/D and I have been hearing it and WDHP regularly
the past few weeks beginning at 2130 Z. Unless you have an antenna with
directivity, WBBM Chicago will hog the frequency once the terminator moves
near Chicago. ZBVI has an announcer with a midwestern U.S. accent, not what
I expected out of the Caribbean, and that threw me at first.

2006-12-13 Thread LAWRENCE STOLER
I have nothing against Christmas music however I think the way the radio
chooses to do it by going 24 hours a day with it as early as before
Thanksgiving is nuts.

I believe you gradually bring the Christmas music in starting at the
beginning of December. On Christmas Eve, you go all Christmas music for 24
hours.

On the other hand, a station declaring itself a Christmas-free zone is not
such a bad idea.

Re: [IRCA] Cape May NJ TIS on 1700

2006-12-13 Thread John Cereghin
Heard a relatively new TIS on 1700, presumed WQEL632 from Cape May, NJ. Clear
mentions of Cape May, mainly listing upcoming events. Presumed 10 watts but
low audio made copying it rough. Heard in Camden, Delaware on the car radio
Dec. 13 at 1430 local.

It's been an odd day, propagation-wise. WDNC-620 in Durham NC is in like a
local at 1430 local., and even the strong local channels (680, 1150) had
competition underneath at 2:00 PM local.

[IRCA] All Christmas music formats

2006-12-13 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
There was an interesting story in the Business Review (Albany NY) on
12/8 about radio stations that switch to All Christmas / All The Time
formats around Thanksgiving. The article says that about 370 stations
nationwide make the switch each year. It quoted a media research firm
who reviewed 119 FM stations that adopted this format in 2005. They
found an average market share increase of 10% in both the adult age
25-to-54 and all listener over age 12 sections. Two Albany area stations
mentioned in the article had adult 25-to-54 market share increases of
50% (WKLI) and 37.5% (WTRY) last year!

Personally I can't stand this format. I have the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
Christmas Album on CD. When I feel the need, I find that Colorado
Christmas (with Alison Krauss helping out on vocals and John McEuen on
banjo) once a week throughout December seems to satisfy all of my needs
for Christmas music.

Re: [IRCA] 2007 WRTH

2006-12-13 Thread W. Curt Deegan
Mike,

You're absolutely right. I completely overlooked the fact the price
was marked as CDN$.

I was actually looking at the package price for WRTH and Passport --
$35.38 vs CDN$39.63, both of which meet the super-saver criteria of
the two sites for free shipping -- and when this is converted for the
currency, the difference is a whopping 92 cents to the Canadian
advantage. The "no biggey" becomes a "nothing at all" when it's all
said and done.

Shouldn't try to think so early in the morning, difficult enough at
my best time of day.

Thanks for setting me straight.

We have been getting hammered with one Pacific storm after another -
I am sure that Patrick Martin can attest to the ferocity of some
of these systems.

I have brought in all my ALA100 boxes after
my balcony - garden installation was trashed for
the 3rd time in as many weeks.

This morning I had a fright that I am lost one
of my ALA100 boxes over a 7th storey balcony.
Was OK - it was just hidden behind the remains of
a clay pot and mandarin plant...

Curt: Did you take the difference between the US and Canadian dollars into
account? Amazon.com lists the WRTH at $19.77US and Amazon.ca lists it at
$21.39CAN. The exchange rate is somewhere around 1.15. That makes the cost

Re: [IRCA] 2007 WRTH

2006-12-13 Thread W. Curt Deegan
The Amazon.ca price for the pair is about 4 bucks higher than the
Amazon.com price, at least as shown to me here in the US by the two
web sites. The super saver price minimum is also higher at Amazon.ca
but since the prices are higher it is still just below the price of
the two, which would still save shipping charges just as it does in
the US. Not a biggey, but 4 bucks is 4 bucks.
