[IRCA] WOR Towers

2007-01-11 Thread chris and anne
Hello allI was lucky enough to see the old WOR 710 NYC towers come down
today...It was carried at noon as a news item on WABC Ch. 7 NYC.quite
impressive. They even had a short interview with Tom Ray of WOR , one of our
esteemed colleagues on these lists.. I grew up listening to WOR in the 40's and
50's. It was long the station of choice by my parentswhile I was listening
to the early rock on WINS, WMCA and WABC...but for news and talk, WOR was hard
to beat ,and probably still is !!. 73 ChrisK4NHLTaylors, S.C.

Not sure if January 10th qualifies as mid-Winter, but it's getting close. :)

Any chance I can twist your arm for a test from WKDK?

 Les,

IF I get to get moved back to Newberry and do stuff
for WKDK, I'l set up a DX test on the new BE
transmitter. I still have my MD of WKDK CW, I think.

It will be mid winter before we can do anything.

[IRCA] WMRO 1560khz Full Power/ND Test Announced. Update on WOKY QSL's. More!

2007-01-11 Thread Les Rayburn
WMRO in Gallatin, TN is going to do a brief full power 1KW, Non-Directional
test this coming Sunday night/Monday
Morning as they test out their remote control/automation system. Please note
the following on this important test:

The test is automated. No live personnel will be at the station, so please
no telephone calls. Also Monday is a holiday, so no telephone calls on
Monday either. This is a request directly from the station, so please
respect it.

WOKY DX Test QSL Information: Engineer Kent Winrich reports that he has not
forgotten about the requests for
verifications on the test. Kent and his family have moved twice in the past
few months, and his workload is also
very heavy. Please be patient. The QSL's will be sent, though it may be some
time before they are received.

Here are the January Tests currently scheduled:

WMRO 1560khz Gallatin, TN Maintenance Test
Date(s): January 15th, 2007 (Late Sunday night, early Monday morning)
Time: 1AM Central Time to 2AM Central Time (1 Hour Test)

Modes of Operation: Inventory Insert 60 Second Long Test inserted into
local breaks
at approximately :24 past the hour, :34 past the hour, and :48 past the
hour.

Test will be conducted at 1KW, Non-Directional pattern. Station is testing
remote control/automation
features.

Programming: 60 Second Long Inventory Insert during local breaks. These
include Morse Code ID's and
sweep tones. Music will be transmitted in the Bright AC format, with
artists like John Mayer, Five for Fighting,
Goo Goo Dolls, etc.

Notes: Remote Control/Automation testing. A song/artist list should be
available after the test to help with verification. DX'ers are encouraged to
note song title and artist along with exact time so that we can compare that
to the playlist.

The test will be automated. DO NOT CALL THE STATION! Also, do not call on
Monday which is a federal holiday.

QSL Information: Station is handling QSL's directly, however, Scott Bailey
is dealing with some serious family medical issues, so responses may take
quite some time. Please be patient and do not expect a reply for several
weeks.

E-mail reception reports may be sent to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Send Postal reports and/or recordings to:

Scott Bailey, President General Manager
WMRO Radio, Magic 1560
P.O. Box 1445
Gallatin, TN 37066

Please include a SASE for reply.

Our thanks Scott Bailey of WMRO, who's always been very DX Friendly! And
also to Paul Walker, who helped to arrange yet another test for all of us.

KRSN 1490khz Los Alamos, NM Maintenance Test

Date(s): Sunday Morning (Late Saturday Night) January 28, 2007

Time: 0100-0110, 0200-0210, 0300-0310 Mountain Time. Ten minute long test
period at the top of each hour.

Modes of Operation: Special DX Test. 640 Watts, Non-Directional

Programming: Phonetic voice ID's, Morse Code ID's, Sweep Tones.

Notes: This will be a challenging test, as KRSN is on an STA that allows
them only 640 watts. The antenna is a short (about 80 foot) folded unipole
mounted on a 150 foot tower. The top of the tower supports several bays of
cell phone antennas.

KRSN has a new Harris transmitter, which they will be testing.

QSL Information: Reception reports via e-mail are preferred. Send reports
to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

For those who cannot send e-mail reports, the address for Postal reports is:

KRSN AM 1490
145 Central Park Square
Los Alamos, NM 87544
Please include an SASE for reply.

A recording of the test is requested. The following formats (only) are
acceptable:
.MP3 or .WAV for e-mail attachments. Audio CD or cassette for Postal
reports. If a recording is not available, please include a detailed
description of your reception including the sequence of test elements,
description of sweep tones, etc.

WFIF 1500khz Milford, CT Maintenance Test

Date(s): Saturday Morning (Late Friday Night) January 26, 2007

Time: 12:01AM (Eastern Time) until 12:11AM (Eastern Time) Test is
10 minutes long in duration.

Modes of Operation: WFIF is testing their new remote control system to be
sure that the station can be switched on/off remotely or during emergencies.
3KW Non-Directional. WFIF is a daytimer, so this is a rare chance for many
to log them.

Per their engineer, Mr. Willie Barnes, the test will consist of voice ID's
and several tones, along with a wavering tone. If people have Cool Edit
(or Audition) they can use the spectrum display and that tone will show up
as a horizontal sine wave in the specrograph. That makes it very easy to
see, as well as hear.

Programming: Voice ID's, tones, and a wavering tone.

QSL Information: Reception reports via e-mail are most desired. Postal
reports are not encouraged and may not be responded to at all, based on
station's limited resources and manpower.

E-Mail all reports to Mr. Willie Barnes, Chief Engineer at:

[IRCA] field strengths of AM FM stations by Zipcode

2007-01-11 Thread Mary Anne Sanford
Don't remember seeing this before in this list.

Find the field strengths of AM day, AM Night and FM stations within U.S.
postal zip codes throughout the U.S. This web program produces accurate
radio station signal field strengths, organized by zip codes, from the FCC's
CDBS AM and FM database, as of September 27, 2006. V-Soft Communications
provides this data free of charge as a service to its customers and friends.

http://www.v-soft.com/ZipSignal/default.htm

WARRANTY DISCLAIMERS AND LIABILITY LIMITATIONS
DATA, AS PRESENTED, ARE DISTRIBUTED AND PROVIDED AS IS AND WITH NO
WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Enter a US zip code to find the signal strength of AM or FM stations serving
the location.
AM stations can be identified by their frequency in kHz or the all upper
case city of license. AM Night stations have the -N appended to their
call signs.
100+ dBu Extremely strong

80+ dBu Very Strong

70+ dBu Strong Principal city coverage

60+ dBu Good coverage

50+ dBu Weaker Coverage - may have interference

* Coverage predictions use the standard FCC method, directional antenna
patterns, if used by the stations, and for FM stations the 30 arc-second
NGDC terrain elevation database. AM daytime station coverage and nighttime
coverage is predicted using the M3 ground conductivities curves. 50 dBu is
the cutoff for prediction for this signal strength retrieving program. Many
stations may have coverage past the 50 dBu. The majority of FM stations are
protected from interference by the FCC only to their 60 dBu, any coverage
past that signal strength value would depend on whether there are other
stations causing interference, which cannot be reliably predicted using the
standard methods employed herein. Many AM stations operating at night are
subject to interference which is not considered by this

[IRCA] WAMF Radio Disney (was Burnt River DX)

2007-01-11 Thread saulamdx
WAMF has been recently reported carrying Radio Disney.
But I also see WRDZ La Grange IL (Chicago carries it).
I had the reception a good hour-plus after sunrise,
and it was all stuff I hear during the winter daytime
at that time (no greyline DX), so I'm going to count
WAMF. But it's close enough that I should hear it
again - it was a station I only recently noticed I
didn't have in my log, and that it was Disney - so I
waited there for it to //1560, which was in with a
moderate signal. I've never heard LaGrange. I'll have
to sit on 1300 a bit more...

the K-index has gone up, but there's still a weak carrier from 1215
trying to struggle through (actually audible, not just visible on a
waterfall display), at 0415UT.

Nothing finding its way through the longwave electrical noise however.

Re: [IRCA] Jamming

2007-01-11 Thread Bob Young
Very interesting article, I remember jamming back in the 70's and 80's on
shortwave. None of the recordings on the site sounded like the ones I
remember though. The ones I remember sounded like a very distorted fog horn.
Coincidently right after I had read some of this article I got up to change
the band on one of my radios and switched up to the 2nd band and landed
close to 3 mhz, on my way down to the top of the BCB I encountered a sound
almost identical to the old jammers on 2850 or very close to it at about
0515 UTC (this is an analog radio, a SP-600 with readout close to within a
couple of KHz)

This was posted on another list and while SW oriented,
it has MW implications too. Regardless, interesting
stuff.

2007-01-11 Thread Mike Stonebridge
Don Nigel:

I had a faint carrier on 1215 plus very faint audio on 1575. Nothing else
noted on MW. Of course all the LW stations up to 198 were in with audio.
Norway-153 was surprising good this evening.
