[IRCA] KFQD

2007-03-01 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Patrick keeps hearing KFQD; they hear it in California. But here,
usually KXL and CK-750 battle it out with no sign of Alaska.

Tonight, however, KFQD has become dominant on the channel on all
antennas, though KXL is almost dominant on the west flag. There's a
hum on there too, don't know if it's KFQD. Nice ID at the top of the
hour at 0700 UT.

best wishes,

Re: [IRCA] TPs and TAs on the West Coast

2007-03-01 Thread Arthur W Peterson
Larry Godwin and I both heard several TAs from the San Francisco area in
1965.
On 11/15/65 I logged and verified BBC-1214 and logged France-1205.
Then on 12/16/65 I logged and verified one of my most prized catches,
Tallinn, Estonia on 1034. The next day I logged East Germany-1043. Ah,
those were the days!
Since then, all these frequency allocations have been shifted up 1khz.

40 years later, I've had another nice run of TAs in 10/05 and 11/05,
mostly on long wave. That was a welcome bit of DX excitement.

If you have a transmitter that uses the common 833A as a final and
modulator, you very likely can get it down to 27 watts. I mentioned
recently that by putting a large Variac (variable AC autotranformer) to feed
the high voltage and bias supplies, I got an ancient GE XT-1A transmitter
down to 25 watts. And it sounded fine. It may not be type accepted down to
that level, but it might also be grandfathered in. It might be worth
investigating.

I don't know if a transmitter that used a different tube type such as a
4-400A could similarly be dropped to such a low power cleanly.

Chances are you could look on eBay and get a suitable variac.

Just toss in a few code IDs after midnight if you get it to work. (grin)

Yes, Scott.. the matter of a solid state rig here at THE BIG 1590 has been
beaten to a pulp and then some.

FYI, for anyone wondering, WABV signs off at SUNSET every night, as we can't
legally funciton at night and cease operations since we cant drop to our
PSSA or night Authorizaiton

I've seen a few stations, WFHT for example.. where the PSRA and PSSA
actually have benefited the station

If you actually read the order before ranting about it, you'd see that
indeed, you CAN use your licensed night power level instead of a
PSRA/PSSA power level. So yes, you can go to 27 watts at 6:30 and stay
there.

(And if you're running a 1 kW tube rig all night long at 27 watts,
you're probably wasting enough power in a year or two to pay for that
solid state rig...but that matter's been beaten to death on another list.)

Given that the FCC order explicitly reminds stations that they're under
no obligation to use their PSRA/PSSAs, and that they can use licensed
power levels at those hours if they're higher, we may never know.

Re: [IRCA] TPs and TAs on the West Coast

2007-03-01 Thread The Kaskey Family
Bill,

Oh my yes...Grant Manning! Neat guy, made good antennas...The only time in the
60s that I came close to hearing a TA was one evening when Clarence Freeman
from Auburn called me, alerting me to his reception of Dakar on 1206 (I think).
I tried but could hear no more than a weak carrier. I still was primarily a
domestic dxer then, but did love to hear Alaskans, Hawaiians, ZCO, 4QD, The
Zedder on 1000 and many JJs that I didn't much pay attention to as I ignorantly
didn't know about their time signals & IDs. I learned that 10 years later.
Midway Island on 920 was one of my better catches now that I think about it.
Conditions were pretty nice then!

What I have read about this eclipse is this. The midpoint of
the eclipse (moon totally covered by shadow, appearing
a deep red) will occur at moonrise, i. e. sunset, in the
eastern part of NA. ABout an hour after moonrise, the partial
eclipse phase should be visible. Of course in Europe this will
all happen during late evening.

I'll try to look up the time references later.

Re: [IRCA] A PSSA/PSRA Rant

2007-03-01 Thread Craig Healy
> Why cant I just stay and plain old 27 watts?

That's weird. I've never heard of a situation where a station had more
power at night than during some other hours. Perhaps some not-too-distant
station has a PSSA but no night power? You would have to protect them
during those hours, but not later when they are off? Sure, there are
stations with bigger power at night and a directional antenna, but not
little powers like this. Very weird..

It is possible to make a large attenuator to dissipate some power and run
the same transmitter at the same power after daylight hours. Probably could
be done with some relays. Do you have some sort of audio automation that
has relay outputs to control things? That usually can be cobbled up to do
what you need. Otherwise, Broadcast Tools has a relatively inexpensive
switcher meant for that sort of thing. What's the minimum power your
transmitter will put out comfortably?

I have used a timer/controller from Grainger to do pretty much what you
need, but it's over a grand these days. I think it cost about $400 when I
first used it.

There are ways to make that happen, and probably not all that expensive when
you're dealing with under a hundred watts. Drop me a note off list if you
want to follow up.

To be honest, I think there ought to be some minimum power assigned, maybe
20-25 watts. Less than that is pretty silly.

[IRCA] A PSSA/PSRA Rant

2007-03-01 Thread Radiofldude
This PSSA crap is exactly that, a load of crap.

Mind you, I'm not complaining about the issue of the power levels my station
was given... Im a little upset at all the hoops we must jump thru!

I go to 33 watts from 6:30 to 7:00pm
Then I go to 15 watts from 7pm to 7:30pm
Finally, I go to 10 watts from 7:30 to 8:30PM

At 8:30pm, I go back to my NIGHT power of 27 WATTS!!

What is the point of jumping thru all these hoops, which will requires a
sophisticated peic eof equipment and solid state transmitter. Neither of which
I
have or can afford (We're on an old tube right)

Why cant I just stay and plain old 27 watts?

LUCKILY, my PSRA stays at 6am ALL year long and a nice, level 500 watts

For the record, I record both my AM and FM DX at 64kbps, 16kHz stereo.
There are those who insist that stereo offers nothing and uses up more
space. Because I interchange between AM & FM, and since most FM is in
Stereo, I've found it's less trouble to do it all in stereo.

I agree with Russ; apart from the size, I find working with MP3
format files no different than editing the original WAV format. They
sound identical and, using most editing tools, you can trim/process
the audio the same with either format. (I use Cool Edit, Audacity and

Not surprisingly, MP3 files deteriorate about as fast as
WAV files (if they do at all...)

And I challenge anyone to record dx, any dx, at 16 to
24kbps (ok, maybe 64kbps...) and tell the difference
between that and a cassette tape.

Recording DX as a WAV file is a huge waste of storage space.

Note:

WAV uncompressed1:1 10 MB If the wave wav file was sampled at 16

[IRCA] A couple of Iowa college items from the early 1960s.

2007-03-01 Thread Dr. Tom Gruis
Hi!

The unfortunate thing about KHKE stirred up a few memories.

Under the trivia heading, when KRNL, a 10 Watt FM-er came on the air in
about 1963, I was the person that installed the equipment and even had done
the FCC paper work.

They had had a carrier current station before that. And after the FM came on
there were little AM transmitters fed by an FM receiver because so few of
the students had FM radios! That little station had a range of about 15
miles.

And I did the last upgrade of Coe College's carrier current system that they
planned to use for just a couple or three years before they too went to FM
KCOE.

In 1969 the Division of Audio-Visual Instruction of the National Education
Association had their convention in Portland, Oregon and this was my last
Carrier current project, although I did repair the one at Reed College near
Portland.

At the time I was the engineer for KBPS ("Benson Polytechnic School"). This
was, and is, the station of the Portland, Oregon Public Schools. They were
at the time 250 watts unlimited on 1450. During my time I filed paperwork
with the FCC there in Portland to increase their power to 1 KW. The old AM
transmitter had been built in the 30s, so I was told. It had marvelous
performance and great audio and RF power to spare. Most reliable. I ran
proof on it three or four times. I had to rebuild it over Christmas break in
1968-1968 - no school - not on the air. That required an extra proof or two.
All was well with it except the olde wires' insulation was crumbling and
there were a couple of tube types that were on the far edge of becoming
extinct.

UNI's station has a repeater or translator here in Des Moines. It is located
t the Site of KDPS, 88.1, the Des Moines Public School station, on the air
since ca. 1952. I was in Des Moines Tech high school at the time. (The calls
are: KBPS and KDPS.)

I have lots of olde time radio memories.

Check desmoinesbroadcasting.com and click on KCBC, where I worked for about
8-1/2 years, and be prepared

Please excuse the perhaps maudlin memories of an olde coot. ("Olde" is the
olde way to spell "old.")

73,

Doc.

Nero is a CD burning software, which has some bells and whistles, but
AFAIK one of them is not compressing the audio files. I use Nero to
brun my CD's now. Used to use Roxio but Nero works better and is more
efficient to use.

A .wav file is uncompressed whereas an .mp3 is compressed. The values
cited by someone else earlier in this thread are representative.

There are those who insist that we should all use .wav files, however I
am not one of those. I did that for the first 6 months or so of
recording DX via PC, and for DX purposes, I never noticed any
difference, degradation or whatever. But working with .wav files for
remote recording of DX for longer periods results in really ginormous
files which take forever to load up and are harder to work with. For
short clips, .wav remains an option for some, but I work in .mp3 and
have no regrets.

[IRCA] FCC withdraws ALL PSSAs/PSRAs granted prior to 2/1/07, reissues 'em in bulk

2007-03-01 Thread Scott Fybush
So much for the old days of "if you saved a copy of your PSRA/PSSA, you
can keep using it, but otherwise they're all lost."

Follow the links in the forwarded e-mail below to see how the FCC is
handling the impending change in DST scheduling - they've rescinded all
PSRA/PSSA grants made on or before 2/1/07, and they've recalculated
PSRA/PSSA data for every eligible station and made it available through
their CDBS database. It's still not easily accessible, but at least it's
there...

You may also want to try recording directly into Audacity next time and
eliminate the Nero software all together. Looks like the RDX-150
functions as a USB sound card so Audacity (or any other recording

Re: [IRCA] Digitalizing DX cassettes

2007-03-01 Thread Konnie Rychalsky
Charles,

Nero is fine. Archiving to .wav is prefered. Assuming the 'many 1.4 MB
floppies' post was a kid: I obtained a CD burner at under $50 which came
with Nero (but use Music Center Pro*) and that 500 MB can be stored, as is,
on a CD at a wopping 17 cents each, in 100 bulk qty. Actually, I archive a
complete DX season onto one (1) CD as mp3 files (about twelve hours worth.)
Since my cassettes run about an hour, I use an editor to cut the l-o-n-g
recording into segments (tracks) that begin with IDs, and other line items
in my reception report (allowing quick run through and check by station.)

Basically, once stored as a wav file onto a CD, you can edit, copy, convert
from there without changing the original, and keeping the computer sludge
free.

73s,
Konnie
*Program has 32 tracks available for more sophisticated projects, and had
national airplay of an edited project for 9-11 rememberance last year. This
is not recommended since the sequence file generated uses twice the memory
until it is deleted.

Paul,

If you look at FCC ground counductivity charts for e. NC, and
specifically for Pitt County, North Carolina, you'll see that the boundary
for 4
mmho conductivity and 2 mmho conductivity passes south of Greenville (NC).
Grifton is inside the 4 mmho boundary.

Groundwave coming from the 2 mmho region is weaker than would other-
wise be the case.

Skywave is a different matter!

Yes, I am familiar. The Coastal Plains were once under the ocean, and are
much sandier than the norm. Hard to make a good DC ground here.

Doc,

Thanks a zillion. Just EXACTLY what I needed! More cassettes!

Are you familiar with those little "flash drives?" I have three 1-GB
"Intelligent
Sticks." 1.75" long, 0.75" wide, 0.125" thick.

I keep important records in duplicate on two of the three. Plugged into a
"USB hub"
that goes from PC to PC.

A few of the newer, and cheaper, flash drives could store my DX IDs (in dupli-
cate) for a long time.

BTW, I have a serious problem in calling my taped IDs, "airchecks." The latter
word is too broadcast oriented.

I have had a BAD time with PCs, so I refuse to keep important data on a
PC's hard-
drive. OTOH, my eldest daughter has an old Gateway PC that she leaves energizes
constantly. She's more like an appliance operator, while I'm more like a
technician.

She's had nearly zero problems with the Gateway in five years. OTOH, my PCs
go Berkeley regularly. Probably because I "fool" with the applications so much.
Go figure.

Are you keeping up with KTRB?

[IRCA] KTRB Comments

2007-03-01 Thread Mike Hardester
For those following the movement of KTRB - 860 to the San Francisco
Bay Area, an accurate historical account of the station can be found in
Bob Wien's column in the the March 3, 2007 issue of DX Monitor and
"soft" DX MONITOR.

I was born and raised in Modesto and my cousin, Milt Hibdon, began
his radio career at KTRB. He often talked about the station -- a clear
channel station that maintained its regional programming and appeal for
many years, and one that he was proud to have been a part.

Bill Bates was a local figure, had an AM program which I listened to
back in the 50's while getting ready to go to school. Bill provided
programming for the community. Whether it was involving downtown
Modesto, the Portuguese community of the West Side (broadcasting in the
Portuguese language), local sports, weather information, lost children,
lost animals (and the occasional wandering cow), he tried to provide
something for all listeners.

Years ago, KTRB conducted a DX Test for the IRCA and NRC. When I
approached Cal Purviance, PD and part-time CE, about the test, he
enthusiastically agreed.

KTRB was a part of the community and never forgot its roots.

Mike in Jacksonville, NC
=

My cousin, Milt Hibdon, went on to be GMs at several stations. His last
GM position was KORL-650, in HI, years ago. After KORL, he was assigned
to corporate HQ in New York where he passed away in 1989.

Re: [IRCA] TPs and TAs on the West Coast

2007-03-01 Thread Patrick Martin
Mike,

I am hoping two cycles repeat themselves in the future. One, is the the
fantastic night after night of solid DUs up and down the dial in the
early 80s I had here. Two and three DUs on many frequencies. In the
period of a few years I picked up over 200 Aussies & over 100 NZers plus
most of the Pacific heard & QSL'd. After 1985, that pretty much
disappeared. Today, DUs are maybe 10% of what they once were. The
second is the unbelievable conditions from 1992-1995, when I heard and
QSL'd Nepal, India, Tibet, and Bangladesh. That was much more short
lived, but it was great while it lasted. Conditions do run in cycles.
However, quite often sometimes those conditions never repeat themselves
to the point where there once were. In both cases, the DUs and the
Subcontiental Asians have never returned. Sure, I have had decent DU
openings since those days, and on a rare occasion, and India on 1566,
but nothing like before. I think it comes down to being at the dials at
the right time. As far a TAs go, at least here the fantastic opening I
got back in the early 80s was much better than anything I have had in
recent years. I was driving to the store in the early 80s when I had
Algeria 891 armchair copy on the car radio! I came home and pulled a
bunch of Germans, France, UK, etc, easy as pie. The opening was weak
here last Fall compared to the early 80s.

[IRCA] TPs and TAs on the West Coast

2007-03-01 Thread Mike Hardester
Since I no longer trust the ol' brain housing group for memory, I'll
toss this out to the West Coast DXers from the 60s/70s. There was a
group of DXers in the San Jose Bay area who were reporting exceptional
DX, including TAs (BBC-1215) and TPs. The year was before 1972 when I
joined the Navy. Perhaps past DXM issues of that era might identify them
and their catches.

Point. A lot of interesting TPs and some TAs are being noted by WCNA
DXers. Always one to believe in DX and solar cycles, is there a
possibility that this is a cycle that returns less frequently that
expected 11 year cycle?

Again, I'm not certain, but I think the activity reported lasted for
longer than a year. Of note also, the San Jose region has a higher level
of ground conductivity than many other areas of the United States
(http://www.fcc.gov/mb/audio/m3/index.html). This is a topic that has
been discussed here and/or the NRC site.

Just a thought.

[IRCA] 891 HET

2007-03-01 Thread Pete Taylor
Not your all time great TP DXer here but while listening to KDJQ-890
this morning, before and after KIXI's 0945 ET pattern change, there
was a nice het, presumably attributable to 5AN. If I was getting
this, I would think it would have to have been a half way decent
morning for those on the coast with more sophisticated signal sucking
devices.

What's of interest is that the Palomar allowed me to turn down the RF
so KDJQ wasn't obliterated by KIXI or by other nefarious nearby
overloading powerhouses. I can't do that with the Kiwa.

Nice going on WDCD. I think they may be harder in Madison than they are in
Grafton WI (rather easy on East BOGs thru CHIN) and hear in Barrington IL,
since my QTH's are further from phasable KXEL and closer to Albany. I think
WADM left full power on a couple hours too late.

Anyone know if KXEL will still be off tonite, since with the turn of the
month daytimer will be on quite longer on day rigs and we may clean up on
1540 via SSS. So far the only new thing here in Barrington is Bahamas which
has floated in from time to time, but I have quite an extensive log book on
1540 from the past. I caught Bahamas in Grafton a couple years back in a big

[IRCA] Digitalizing DX cassettes

2007-03-01 Thread Charles A Taylor

Group:

I acquired an ADS Tech RDX-150 "Instant Music" converter which interfaces
stereo RCA-type plugs (input and output audio) to USB and thence to my
PC for storage.

It uses Nero software.

1 hour of audio (at 44 kb sampling rate) came to 500 MB.

The test file carried a .nb extension. When I attempted to open that file with
Nero software, I got an "unexpected error in reading file!"

Copied the file, and changed the extension to .wav, and the file opened
properly.

Nero was supposed to have (I believe) compressed the file. 500 MB is huge,
after my understanding.

Comments?

Charles

Willis,

If WCSL-1590 gets 10 kW, I think we should volunteer to steal the
transmitter and
drag it down to Abbeville. Give it to Paul.

FCC doesn't seem to have a clue. Probably would never find out.

A brief listen at 1400UT yielded nothing too exciting, another run at
1430UT yielded the following:

out of the ordinary: 738 very bassy audio, seemed to be a man
talking, but not readable at all, best on the west Flag, so likely DU.
972 with traces of music riding on its big
carrier. First audio on this since the fall I think.

"the usuals":

reasonable audio, but still fighting with splatter: 774, 594

audio buried in splash, readable snippets: 567, 828, 1287

audio traces in splash, nothing readable: 639 747

Most carriers heard were below 1100 kHz, hum noted on 657 and 855,
presumably the N. Koreans, but nowhere near audio.

best wishes,

Nick

[IRCA] KCNZ Is Back On

2007-03-01 Thread DXERak
As confirmed by both the KCNZ website and my personal monitoring, KCNZ 1650
is back on air. Reception on the evening of 2/28 and this morning at 0804
ELT
was poor, and I suspect that they are not running at full power. Usually
KCNZ
is dominant here, but last night KHWN AR was the dominant station on 1650.

More of a DU flavour to reception here this morning. No TP audio
noted (though a number of carriers) but did have good audio from 5AN on
891 with ABC news at 1330 ending with "ABC Adelaide" ID. About 95%

Re: [IRCA] Michael Savage

2007-03-01 Thread Gil Stacy
"Thanks a million for this one Gil. I'm 42, but I have a huge love of
Big Band and all things swing. Kep 'em comin'!"

Age has nothing to do with it. 4 or 5 years ago the current Glenn Miller
Orchestra under direction by Larry O'Brien was here in town performing at
the Lucas Theatre, a 1920s theater, recently rennovated. I treated three
generations of my family to the event. My daughter, then 12, couldn't
believe it when she heard Johnny Mercer songs performed. She remembered
them from when her grandmother would sing them to her as a small child.
More than one track from the Glenn Miller Orchestra CD she bought at the
time has shown up on her CD mixes which also include Old Blue Eyes Himself.
BTW, Sinatra is a featured singer in one of the Tommy Dorsey shows featured
in the Big Bands section of the website I mentioned in my last post.
