Re: [IRCA] 1450 KIAL Dutch Harbor, AK

2007-04-14 Thread Patrick Martin
Walt,

The station is supposed to be on the air with a longwire antenna
(Unalaska, rather than Dutch Harbor), but with 50 watts on a graveyard
frek, it would no be easy. Also they are co-channel KLAM Cordova, 250w
that no one has logged down here either, as far as I know.
When I lived in Seward AK in the 60s, KLAM operated 7:30-9:30 AM,
then 5 PM to 10 PM daily. I think they were off on Sundays. Their 250w
was quite good across Prince William Sound at over 100 miles.
Adak operated on 890 khz for many years and they were heard down here
often with 250 watts in the 60s/70s. KSDP-840-Sand Point AK I heard with
250w back in the 90s when they signed on, but in both cases 890 Adak
KSDP 840, the frequencies were clear. I would think with a beverage
pointed NW from your place up North in the Charlottes, you might nab
KIAL with a bit of luck.

They were locally owned by a guy that ran a repair shop in Cordova I

[IRCA] TPs for 14 April

2007-04-14 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Interesting morning, as occasionally there were good signal strengths
on some of the regulars, and lots of carriers, but not a lot of
audio, even of a low level. 1566 did have some moments of the
strongest signal I've heard in awhile from them at 1252UT, when it
was thundering in on a barefoot ICF2010 with a lady reading out the
FEBC web address in Japanese accented letters.

reasonable audios (though often battling w/splash): 774, 828, 1566;
all at very good levels at times, 1566 the best as noted above

not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise: 747
w/hum and 1287

Burbles in the splatter: 612 DU, 693, 738 DU: island mx?, 873, 1017,
1206, 1386 seemed //774

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by
splatter): 855 w/hum, 972, 1053, 1215 w/hum

best wishes,

Nick

Might have hit the send button to soon...figured things were shot by

gave fair audio on 1575, very weak audio on 1503, and 1566 at quite a

[IRCA] NE Oregon TPs, Saturday morning

2007-04-14 Thread Steve Ratzlaff
1566 HLAZ was good at 1219 utc, with English preacher speaking one sentence
at a time, then waiting while it was translated into whatever Asian language
the translator was using. Radio Rossii also good at the same time, 153, 180,
189, 234, 279. 1287 poor/weak, playing pop music, with Asian announcer after
the song, 1225 utc. 1206 poor with talk, 1227 utc. The high end had weak to
strong hets just about every channel, down to 1053 kHz or so at first.
Later, 828 had poor audio, 1313 utc. 1116 had 4BC with a number of very
brief fadeups, some to weak/medium level between 1314-1330 utc.
I've been using a prototype of a new Wellbrook broadband antenna/phasing
system for a number of months. It works superbly for the high band Asian
reception, and 1566 is significantly better heard with it than on my E/W
longwire or my NW/SE ALA100 100' loop. I don't know if Wellbrook will
eventually market this antenna. It requires some physical distance to space
the antennas in order to get the good front/back directionality, which not
everyone would have the room to do, and it takes quite a bit of coax cable.
But very little tuning or tweaking of the phaser controls is needed, just
tune the radio and switch the direction switch for the desired direction for
very good nulls in the opposite direction.

Steve

Haven't been in the Far East in 22 years, so I don't know how CNR, the

like a Taiwanese.
The gal behind the mike sounds like she has a life, and maybe enjoys

The Mainlanders, on the other hand, always sounded so stuffy. Following
Party Line.

Shanghai City always has had a psychology of its own, and no matter the
Party Line, the
people in that city always were apt to push the limits. This is borne out
in what I
heard from the dial. Shanghai stations seemed to be the first to start
running commercial
ads, and some of them were cute. Sounded like someone had a good time
producing them.
Shanghai being what it is, I'll bet the station personnel who did the spots
weren't sent

As for the little, 1-kW commercial Taiwanese, they sounded provincial,
with thick
accents, mis-cues and flubs. Fun listening, just the same.

Re: [IRCA] TPs for 04-14-07

2007-04-14 Thread vroomski
Nick,

The new Ewe was a notch above the H-800 this morning. In the past the H-800 has
had poor results on MW with TP's. This past week it has performed very well.
It has always worked good on LW. It's location in the front yard and with
underground electric probably is a big factor. At least 100' clear path to the
NW away from houses. Could it be that TP signals are coming in at a different
angle this time of the year? The Ewe is about 5' from the house next door and
the top of the driver element is probably about 12' below the top of the roof.
The terminated end has a 10' shed in front of it and power-lines 10' behind it.
The high performance active whip is in a poor location of TP's. Looking for a
place on the roof to mount it.

This morning many carriers and a few surprises. Audio on 1287 from Japan, but
594 828 with threshold audio at best. Many level 3 carriers this morning.

Re: [IRCA] TransWorld Radio on 800khz

2007-04-14 Thread W. Curt Deegan
Les,

Glad the audio was of use. I hear TWR regularly so reports of my
reception conditions would be useless to you.

I don't have any wire antennas to compare against, but I have been
pleased with the H-800, using it across the bands with good
success. I'm not the prolific DXer as some, but have had good
results with NAVTEX, beacons, MW DX and HF DSC, as examples.

A local noise source has made LW and MW impossible at times, so I've
been less active with that. I've been playing with VHF and the AIS
digital ship-ID system lately. In the past, however, using the H-800
phased with an M-601, has yielded results on MW DX tests that were
often competitive with the big boys and their more elaborate antennas.

I don't have room for meaningful wires, and by placing the H-800 on a
flat roof away from the main part of the house, it has worked very well for me.

Hi all, if you want to hear the stream with winamp, just open your
winamp, and press control l for the open location dialog, and paste
this stream in
mms://70.85.123.3/wabv8671?SWMEXt=.wma
and winamp will come up playing the stream. Also, in there, you can
see the title, which you can't see with windows media player which is

Re: [IRCA] TPs for 04-14-07

2007-04-14 Thread Patrick Martin
Dennis,

The theory behind the EWE that many feel it works like two verticals
that are phased, so raising the height does make a difference. I have
found even raising them 3 feet does jump the S meter up a bit. I plan to
raise the WNW one up 5-10 feet higher this Summer, as the gain of the
WNW one is lower than the SW EWE, but the SW one is almost twice as
long.

Patrick
