Charlie,

You have a rare one, the old KFQD 730. I've got one too from AK. I later
QSL'd them on 750 after I moved back to OR in 67 too. I used to listen
to the old KFQD on 730 alot in the early to mid 60s while living in
Seward AK. Back in the days when there were only a handfull of stations
in the state and a bunch of low power AFRTS stations. I QSL'd several of
them while in AK too. Ah, the good ol' days.

Re: [IRCA] CH-WA & bp-WA: DX Thugs!

2007-04-26 Thread Bruce Portzer
Cholly

You expect me to go through my recordings just like that??! After only
a month??

DX loggings, like fine wine, need time to age. I only recently archived
my raw DX recordings from 2001 (a good vintage), and am now ready to
start on 2002 and 2003. If I find any mystery logs from back then I'll
let you know.

One nice thing about procrastinating - sometimes I ID earlier unids in
subsequent DXpeditions. So by the time I get around to replaying old DX
recordings, I already know what the unids are. It saves me the trouble
of posting mp3 files and asking "what the @#$% is this"?

Their previous "COL" wasn't an incorporated city, either - it was
Cypress Gardens, which is an amusement park!

There is not, and has never been, any requirement that a station's
community of license be an incorporated community, and there have been
plenty of "Pine Hills"-like cases over the years.

The FCC looks for a number of factors in deciding whether or not a
community qualifies as a COL, including the existence of a post office,
the presence of local businesses with the community's name in them, the
existence of local services like a fire company and a school district,
and so on. It's amusing sometimes (especially in FM allotment
proceedings) to read the rationalizations from some of the proponents of
tiny little "communities" seeking allocations...usually so the resulting
station can rimshot some much bigger community elsewhere.

Like...say...Pine Hills or St. Pete Beach :-)

Paul,

WABV is a fig newton of your fevered imagination. It really doesn't
exist, or is a 100 mW station.

I'll listen for your DX Test if you promise to sing all IDs!

WABV, hummmph, bah! Humbug!

You heard WABV from Elberton (GA) to Anderson and Silverstreet (SC)
because the good folk of Abbeville were chasing you out of town!

A useless bit of trivia: although WRXB's license indeed shows "Saint
Petersburg Beach," there is no such city anymore. The city legally
changed its name to "Saint Pete Beach" in 1994, supposedly to alleviate
confusion with St. Petersburg to the east.

The FCC has no procedure to compel a station to file for a "change" of
city of license when the COL changes its name or merges with another
entity. Sometimes stations will file on their own accord - 870 East Las
Vegas NV becoming 870 Whitney NV, for instance - and sometimes they
won't, as witness WNCC 950 Barnesboro PA and WPCL 97.3 Spangler PA,
which are licensed to communities that haven't legally existed since
2000, when those boroughs merged to become Northern Cambria PA. WHPA
93.5 was also licensed to Barnesboro, but it moved to a completely
different community (Gallitzin) as part of a move-in to the bigger
Altoona market, unrelated to the move to Northern Cambria.

[IRCA] Rare logging: WKJV-1380

2007-04-26 Thread Charles A Taylor
Willis,

Yeah, like I'd logged Alaska (which I did back in Indianapolis.
KFQD-730, and I have a QSL card and verie from them).

My current two longwires favor the northeast. One is at 45/225º
and is 65 feet long and 15 feet high. The other is at 135/315º
and is 120 feet long and 15 feet high.

The 125-footer is terminated in the coax at the 315º end, and
so is directive, more-or-less, in that direction.

The 65-footer is strongly influenced by a steel fence that
parallels it and seems to act as a director such that it, too,
faces north.

The new 65-footer, terminated at the 225º end, gives me much
more directivity toward the south and west.

Maybe I'll log that dumb ole' WABV-1590, the one run by that
lunatic from Arkansas, on this new one.

Then, maybe I'll NOT log WABV. Ah, such an encouraging thought.
Once I do log WABV, it'll become a pest, and maybe larn me never
to DX no more! (:-X

Jim-

Maybe your computer is trying to tell you something about your type of
e-mails!

I am only kidding.:)

Perhaps you have a virus of some kind. Last week my e-mail was all screwed
up. I had post I had sent 2 weeks before showing up out of no where.

I ran Advast virus, and it cured the problem.

Advast is free and it bets McAffie and that other virus thing, (can't
remember the name). If you don't already have it, you should get it, it
works!!

Re: [IRCA] E-mail

2007-04-26 Thread Jim Renfrew
Joe,

I have determined that some insidious e-mail coming in - when I add it to
the block senders list instead adds my name to blocked senders! I have gone
in and removed my name from my own blocked senders list, and I've had to do
it twice because if I do it once when I look back it's still there. Anyhow,
thanks for the help. I may not have fixed the source of the problem, but I
know what to do about it now.

At least my mail has been getting out to the lists. At first, it appeared
to be stuck in cyberspace because it wasn't appearing in my own inbox..

Re: [IRCA] phasers?

2007-04-26 Thread Bill Harms
Charlie-san:

I have a Quantum Phaser and have had excellent results with it.
Normally with my two EWEs I can get 60 to 70 dB F/B ratio with nulling.
I have on a couple of stations gotten 90 to 100 dB difference. Simply
outstanding! That means I was able to null locals within 20 miles to a
whisper and clearly hear the stuff normally way underneath. On 1090 for
example, I have been able to identify 6 stations in the clear with WBAL
blasting away at full strength. I have heard Venezuela on 1500 with
WTOP/WTWP on the air. Some people say that the Quantum doesn't perform
well in a high signal environment, but I have not noticed a problem. I
echo what Pat M said. I wish I would have gotten one years ago. It is
worth every penny spent on it, and more.
