Re: [IRCA] the passing of Pete Wilson

2007-07-23 Thread Patrick Martin
Don,

John Rothman is always one of my favorites. I also like Gene Burns and
Bernie Ward. Ray T, I used to like his show better than I do now as he
gets too off the wall much of the time. Then there is Kayal. He can be
quite "fun" to listen to. KGO is the best talk station I have ever
heard. My only other stations for talk is Coast to Coast often, and that
can be anything from KKOH, KEX, KSFO, KVI, KIDO, and local KAST.
If I lost KGO for some reason, I would consider paying the $55 a month
for Cable Internet. But I hope KGO's signal stays solid up here at
night.

2007-07-23 Thread The Kaskey Family
Pat,

I admit KGO is one of the better stations in the area. My very favorite talk
host is John Rothman. Unfortunately he's on 1-5 PDT on Sun & Mon a.m.'s. I
have taken courses from him at Fromm
Inst. here in the city. He is a marvelous lecturer. Specialty is The Middle
East & infrastructure of US Politics.

Dennis,

The DUs were a bit better last night/early this morning as
Marshalls-1098, Kiribati-846, Tonga-1017, Tahiti-738 were all in. There
was also a signal on 1179 which may have been New Zealand.
But 3LO was not all that great in signal, so when it improves, it should
make it inland.

Patrick and group,

Yes, you are right, it is Wattenberg (sp???). KDKA has
Dr. Knowledge with a very similar type program on
weekends, and he is a lot of fun to listen to. My
favorite episode was when he described the military
aircraft that had to take an emergency landing in the
Monongahella River, and was never found again. Yes,
this was in a river, not the ocean...

Thanks for sharing.

2007-07-23 Thread Joe Miller, AB8YP
Thx Chris and the group, I appreciate the
clarification as well. I was out in Seattle Washington
and Orange County California in 2003 and listened to
KGO at night, but Bill Westenhaver (sp???) is the only
announcer that I remember listening to on KGO.

And as long as we're talking KGO, I believe this was
the station that WJR's J. P. McCarthy worked at in the
late 1950's, in between his two gigs at WJR. Of course
the second gig lasted for almost 35 years until his
death in 1995.

2007-07-23 Thread The Kaskey Family
Marty,

I can't answer your question as I watch little TV. Sports events, Jeopardy & a
couple children's shows when the grandchildren are here. I did read several
articles in the San Francisco
Chronicle about Pete's death.

To those of you not familiar with the Bay Area I should clarify that this Pete
Wilson was the anchorperson on local KGO-TV. A very good one it seems.
He is not the Pete Wilson that was Governor of California a decade ago.

Gee, I did not know this. Thanks for passing the info along. Sorry to
hear it. I was listening to Ray last night and I did not hear him

2007-07-23 Thread Neil Kazaross
I've logged WEEI on very good skip nights here in IL with KOA phased out,
and consider it to be very rare DX. Up north by the Lake in WI, I have
considerably better reception of eastern stuff and WEEI is sometimes
detectable in there. I have not caught WRKO at either place and WPTF is
major QRM and if I use a ENE directed BOG in WI, Toronto is a problem,
although I expect I could dig WRKO when they are on their day pattern which
has some signal to the west. WRKO has been heard by a couple area DXers over
the past couple of decades. 73 KAZ Barrington IL, Grafton WI

WIBC isn't real common here in Harrisburg Pennsylvania but I
have heard them quite often. With all the recent discussion
about the station when I woke up this morning at just before
3:00 A.M. I tuned into 1070 and there was WIBC with a very
nice ID. The station then faded down with all the others.

Many years ago while going to school in Pittsburgh WIBC was
quite common. Pittsburgh must be on the very fringe of the
night pattern.

Wonder if WRKO-680 or WEEI-850 have ever been heard very far
west of Boston?
