Re: [IRCA] OT Hal Fishman long time news anchor at KTLA 5 Los Angeles dies.
Sad news. A good fellow and also quite popular in the aviation world. I watched him while growing up, primarily on KTLA. Of the seven channels available from LA in the 60's and 70's, channel five was one of my favorites. 73- Doug On Aug 7, 2007, at 10:59 PM, Patrick Martin wrote: > I was saddened to hear today that long time KTLA 5 Los Angeles News > anchor, Hal Fishman, passed away this morning of colon cancer. [IRCA] OT Hal Fishman long time news anchor at KTLA 5 Los Angeles dies.
I was saddened to hear today that long time KTLA 5 Los Angeles News anchor, Hal Fishman, passed away this morning of colon cancer. He was 75. He was doing the news until last Tuiesday. He was admitted to the hospital and the cancer was discovered on Friday and he passed today. I have been watching the KTLA 5 News at Ten since 1985 when I bought my big satellite dish. I first watched the 10-11 PM news on a CNN News feed. Later in 1986 when KTLA was added as a Super Station, I got it 24/7. Today I watch it on Dish. KTLA is celebrating their 60 years on the air, coming on in 1947. Stan Chambers, reporter started with the station, and still is there. Hal Fishman started at KTLA in 1965, after working at KCOP from 60-65. Even though I never met Hal face to face, I have talked with him on the phone regarding news a couple of times. To me, he was a real friend. The best in the busness. A couple years ago, Larry McCormick, newsman at KTLA, also passed who was in many movies as an LA news person. Hal will be dearly missed. Re: [IRCA] OT Early Airborne TV experiments
Scott, I was wondering if anyone would remember and mention MPATI. I was going to mention it, and the airborne TV transmissions conducted by the U.S. Navy over Viet Nam, in my original message. But I cut it out at the last minute for brevity. I recall that MPATI was somehow connected to Purdue University. I remember trying repeatedly to DX their signals from my QTH in northern IL in the 60s. As I recall they were operating on 2 of the upper UHF channels, possibly 72 and 76, and were broadcasting educational content. I never did receive even a glimpse of signal from them. All of our hometown TV stations were north of us so our outdoor TV antenna did not need a rotor. Each time I tried to DX MPATI I had to physically rotate our antenna to the southeast which my parents didn't seem to appreciate. Matter of fact, the article is up on their website for all to see, including the photo of the plane: http://www.airspacemag.com/issues/2007/august/oldies_and_oddities.php Randy Stewart Springfield MO -Original Message- From: Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, August 06, 2007 9:54 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; irca@hard-core-dx.com Subject: [NRC-AM] OT Early Airborne TV experiments The August issue of Air & Space magazine has an interesting 1 page story titled Broadcast Bomber. It is about the 2nd phase of the experimental Westinghouse Stratovision airborne television transmissions conducted from a B-29 over Pittsburgh in 1948. It was used to broadcast the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia to a 9 state area around Pittsburgh on channel 6. From 25,000 feet it had a coverage area of 525 miles using a 5 kw transmitter for video and 1 kw for audio. The antenna extended 28 feet from the belly of the aircraft and consisted of a 2 element turnstile for video and a 1 element circular dipole for audio. It was a direct (live) relay of signals received from WMAR-TV in Baltimore. The article includes a black and white airborne photo of the aircraft with the transmitting antenna extended. Westinghouse originally intended to develop this project into a nationwide network of airborne transmitters providing TV & FM coverage to 78% of the population using 14 aircraft. However, the FCC delayed approval of the system citing potential interference issues. By 1949 AT&T had setup a long distance coaxial network providing an audio/video connection from the East Coast to the Midwest. This effectively eliminated the need for Stratovision and in 1950 Westinghouse dropped the idea. ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Chris, I have heard them here in the Baltimore area with WBAL phase nulled. WBAL is about 15 miles from here and packs huge signal in this direction at night, but they are nullable. In fact, I have identified six different stations on 1090 with WBAL on the air. Re: [IRCA] Tps for 08/07/07
Listened between 1210 and 1245UT here, and a very mixed bag. There were many carriers, but most of them were at "hardly there" level. With the somewhat disturbed geomagnetic conditions, I expected mostly down under stations, but there a number of Asiatics, at least by bearing, including the only audios. 828 had a man talking briefly, only on northerly Flag; 774 and 1503 also had hints of audio (the latter seemed to be a mix of DU and Asia), but nothing on 1566 in spite of a strong carrier at 1243UT. Carriers worth noting (all Asia unless otherwise noted) were 1602, 1593, 1476, 1332 (DU), 1278, 1242, 1179 (DU), 1134, 1116 (DU), 972, 747 and 738 (DU). He said it was a constant, very loud tone.. and when tuned to 1500 it lit up the "tune" light on his radio. It, however, didn't interfered with his reception of 1490 WPCI also in Greenville. Thanks Pat for that interesting walk down memory lane. I remember reading of that event back when I was kid in the early 50's. Can you remember the first international, live TV telecast? Can you give the 1. program 2. network 3. year 4. host of program 5. What two countries were involved? (No it wasn't the with Soviet Union) I was watching the day this event took place.
