Mike,

As far as I know no Alzhiemer in our family, but people do forget things
as they get older.I think the average age of an IRCA member when I
joined in 1968 (I was 19), was 21. Today it is about 60.

[IRCA] AM Radio In The Canary Islands

2007-09-09 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
I know some DX'ers here have even heard radio stations in the Canary
Islands.

I';ve looked at radiostationworld.com and I know it's not a very complete
list.

Does anyone know where I can find a fairly complete list of AM radio
stations in The Canary Islands, their frequency, power level, "city of
License", amount of towers or any other data?

A very modest morning here in Victoria as well. Most of my audios were
Chinese, although later a weak dawn enhancement for DU did occur. Here's the
haul, with comments. 6 unless otherwise noted:

189
567
576 2RN A nice signal up to 8 at 13:42. Parallel to their audio feed at
www.abc.net/rn/listen/default.htm . Feed though, is about 30 seconds behind
the live transmission.
612 4QR First noted at 13:40. Continues on as I type this at 14:06 with a 7.
 Finally faded out at 14:10.
738 prob 2NR Grafton with a 6 at 13:46
756 1YA Auckland noted at 12:57 at a 7
828 JOBB a 7 at 13:03
837
918 CNR2 at 13:10 // to 3985 at a 7. I don't hear this one very often
963 CRI in RR at 13:13 at a 7.
972 HLCA presumed at a 7.
981 prob. CNR1 at a weak 7. Don't hear this often either.
1008 CNR1 // to 5030 (but this one with slight delay) at 13:18.
1026 ?CC
1053 ?N Korea plus jammer at a 7
1098 weak audio present at 13:22, but a big OC at 13:53.
1134 CNR1 at 13:25 at a 7.
1206 not sure who this is with a 7. Not CNR1 or 2 or CNR KK. Hmm.
1242 presumed JOLF at a 6.
1287 presumed JOHR at a 6 at 13:23
1503 usual DU fade-in late at 13:36 at a 6.
1566 HLAZ at 13:38quite late, but with decent audio at a 7.

That was it for this morning. A few interesting stations, but nothing earth
shattering. Again a very modest DU fade-in. The A/K indices (7 and 1) were of
no help in predicting what would happen this morning. Not nearly as good as
yesterday morning for sure...Walt in Victoria.

[IRCA] Second Fabulous Asian AM inna Row

2007-09-09 Thread John H. Bryant
Gee, I had a second fabulous Asian AM in a row. The Japanese all
seemed down some, but the Chinese and others were hopping. I had 57
channels with at least threshold audio, with 26 of them putting in
listenable audio. The Chinese led the pack, though there were a
number of Japanese and Koreans present, along with my first logging
of Viet Nam 675 of the year.It was particularly strong from 1250
tune-in until just before TOA (natch.) No question about the
language. Other unusual stuff included a big O.C. on 702 for quite a
while, the Chinese over-riding the JJ on 774 (unprecedented), the
Chinese doing well just beneath KGO on 810, CNR2 on 918 with at
least two other echos it really sounded like three or four. Love
those non-synched synchronous transmitters. Another really
interesting non-catch was what was going on beneath 990 after
Winnepeg faded down and the little station in Oregon was wiped out
with the Wellbrook Phased Array. CNR2 was there, parallel the echos
on 918, but beneath that, I had a semi-classical concerto featuring
piano as the lead instrument, but with an orchestra. The only two
possibilities that make any sense to me (evening weekend programming
from Asia) would be a station in Mongolia that might not be on at
this time and a 1 kW Mayak station. Would love other guesses on this one.

1017 had the Korean rather than the usual Japanese. Early, the signal
on 1053 was the usual jammer plus JJ; later this was just a bit of
jammer and a whole lot of pure Beijing dialect. There is a Chinese
station scheduled in standard CC from Yangji near the North Korean
border that was probably the culprit.

The high band was moderately full, but nothing beyond the normal JJ
and CC mix, at what seemed somewhat reduced levels.

A really interesting morning, with the Wellbrook Array being the
antenna of choice every time I checked and proving especially helpful
on the channels that coincide with NAm stations.

Re: [IRCA] Second Fabulous Asian AM in a Row

2007-09-09 Thread cafe

Agreed! I did not get out to the (new)Beverage this AM
but opted for doing more window surfing with the
Eton E1 up against the Drake R8 and the hula-loop ALA100's

It most certainly revealed some weaknesses in my R8 antennas.

Hanging out the 7th floor window of our tower - with the Strait of Juan
de Fuca visible about 3 km away and a clear view to the NW of Neah Bay,
there were some phenomenal signals to be had... on the E1... once
again barefoot.

Audio included (but not limited to) 567 (JJ), 594(JJ), 621 (hammering 620!)
612(mix) 639(Fiji)
675(threshold), 702, 738(mix), 747(JJ), 756(threshold), 774(JJ),
783(threshold), 792, 828(JJ), 846, 855 (buzz), 873, 963(Giant YL in RR),
972(KK), 1134, 1143, 1197, 1287, 1566...

I absolutely encourage those readers of this list that feel that they "cannot
hear TP's from their location"
to actually get out there in their back yards with whatever radios they have...
and try.

I met a local DXer last year who insisted over and over and over and over that
he
could not possibly hear TP's or DU's from his "inland" location 5 miles away
from
the Pacific!

I told him: "Get up at DAWN. Not 3AM. Not 5AM. But dawn. Sunrise. And
tune your radio to 747, 774 or 828 khz... or even 1566 khz..."

He did and called me later in the day astonished that he could hear
Russian on 279khz!

Patrick,

I have an old EICO 330 kit which I retired from use as part of
my PFM equipment. It will probably fill the bill reasonably
well since I can modulate it. It covers from 100 kHz to 30
MHz in several bands.

It's old and isn't as stable as I would wish.

I bought a new SG560 from Ramsey Kits to replace it. The
SG560 is snythesized and is very stable, short-term. However,
its timebase drifts a little too much.

After the warranty runs , I'm going to add an input to allow me to
use my very stable 1 MHz time base in place of its internal
time base.

For the time being, I zero-beat its output against WWV, note the
error and when I zero-beat its output against an unknown frequency
station, I use the error in frequency against WWV in an equation
to reveal the exact frequency of the unknown station.

WHAT is the type number of the signal generattor that you use?
I may be able to find one similar, even though it's old.

Paul's right. Your signal generator falls under Part 15 of the FCC
R&Rs which govern "incidental radiation" devices, and not Part 73,
which governs FM BROADCASTING.

On a purely "what if" basis, if I ever got it in my head to move
out of here and move out there closer to the seacoast, would there
be room on your land for us to park a small trailer over on the
side of your land and pay you rent while "tapping in" on
your antennas and even using my own experience to develope newer
antennas?

Actually, it's mostly a dream; but I need to live in an area of
relatively high humidity and having a HUGE pond nearby (the
Pacific) would make it better for me, physically.

Charles

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] AM Radio In The Canary Islands

2007-09-09 Thread Stewart, Joseph R
Herman Boel's Euro-African Medium Wave Guide (http://www.emwg.info/) doesn't
show info on towers (I'm not sure ANY medium wave source does that), and the
listing is by frequency rather than country. But this is as complete and
up-to-date a list of stations in Europe and North Africa that exists--at least
online. It lists station name, city, power in kW, and program schedule. Click
on "online version," then click on either "MW 531-1099" or "1100-1700" to get
the bottom half or the top of the band. Once there,do a "Find In This Page"
search for "CNR", with is the I.B.U. abbreviation for Canary Islands. For
exampl,e on the bottom end of the band I found Canary stations on 576, 621,
720, 747, 837, 882 (4 stations), and 1008.

[IRCA] This morning

2007-09-09 Thread Bruce Portzer
Good afternoon

I recorded 605-795 kHz again this morning with the SDR-IQ. The Asians
weren't as strong as yesterday, but a few of them were in. Again, I
spot checked the results between 1100-1330 & here are the highlights.

747 & 774 were up and down, sometimes with good audio separable from KXL
& KTTH

675 & 738 had threshold audio around 1310

Weak carriers (about 5-10 db above the noise) were visible at times on
756 666 693 between ~1300-1320 UT.

Not as spectacular as what John Walt Colin Nick & Patrick have been
hearing, but they don't live 5 miles from downtown Seattle, either.

Anytime this slips past WWKB 1520 here in western NY is unusual ... and
tonight it's easily heard at the 2.3 setting on the Drake R8B at 1948 edt.
Having problems with my E/W wire - the UHF socket dies when plugged in
though an alligator clip to the center does work - a short somewhere. But
it's coming in well on my south wire.

France 162 is coming in - LW is usually too noisy to hear much here.

Re: [IRCA] TP's for 9/8 Good morning in Victoria!

2007-09-09 Thread cafe

Well - as I posted previously, I was running back and forth between
the R8 / Wellbrook combo and an Eton E1 perched in a SW facing window
7 stories above the parking lot (with a relative height of several hundred
feet about the local terrain) - the Camosack Manor
(featured here - http://skyscraperpage.com/cities/?buildingID=8252 )
is a 16 story concrete and steel wonder high in the Rockland neighborhood
of Victoria B.C. Canada.

Fed by underground electrical utilities
and internally shielded by the nature of steel re-enforced concrete it makes
for a very quiet listening post -- to a point.
The roof top is bristling with antennas -- every Cell provider is up there,
and there is a 7 to 10kw UHF transmitter nestled in the thatch of
aluminum and steel.

So what happens is this: If I extend some of my antennas
too far away from the balcony, not only is this dangerous to my person (a 7
story
fall is generally fatal - this fact has been proven a couple of times at the
'Sack -
a name residents use...) but also, I get some serious VHF overload.

Anyway - long story short. My balcony is on the East facing side of the
building.
As I look over my shoulder I have a crystal clear view of the San Juan islands
and Mt. Baker in the background.
Out the South facing windows is the Olympic Peninsula, the Juan de Fuca Strait
and the Pacific - for some reason, I get better TP's and DU's out that window
versus
the antenna locations on the Balcony.

I have to either figure out a solution to this or move out.
Thankfully we are thinking of the latter.

My wife agrees: There is no where to BBQ.
The kitchen is too small.

And I need trees for antennas.

So - to partially explain some of the differences in reception:
I am about twice the distance from a pair of medium power AM transmitters
(that Walt and Nick have to contend with) and I was actually facing
away from these AM noise generators, shielded by this 125' concrete
obelisk that I currently reside in.

On the Eton E1, I had 100% copy on Japan on 594, 747, 774 and 828khz
100% copy on China on 963khz and Korea on 972khz. And so on.
I could not say this for the R8. Close but not quite.

Good morning

I left the SDR-IQ running all night and recorded 605-795 kHz. Spot
checks revealed the following from about 1100-1330 UT.

693 JOAB, pips & talk in CBU splatter 1300

738 good carrier at times, audio around 1245

747 JOIB good at times, sometimes only 5-10 db weaker than KXL

774 JOUB also good at times, at one point only about 20 db weaker than
local KTTH-770, but typically 30 db weaker

Weak carriers 639 666 756 sometimes visible on the SDR's display.

LOL Patrick!

At any rate he gets to have lots more power. You can

I'd like to be rich enough (HAH!) to purchase a solid

[IRCA] From Grafton WI to Grafton Australia

2007-09-09 Thread Neil Kazaross
Woke up early this morning with the sun and quickly out to my driveway
here in Grafton and hooked up the 470 ft BOG from the other end in about
10 seconds aiming at 245 degrees.

A quick tune around for DU's found 702 2BL Sydney audible weakly but
certainly enough to tell an Aussie accented gal was speaking to a man
at 1117 ! The BOG aimed this way basically totally kills WLW 700.
Tuning around for more, I ended up on 738 where the audio surely
seemed // at 1119 so 2NR Grafton !! Almost no trace of CHWO(faded to
sunrise) on the BOG aimed that way and WRPQ not on day power that early.
I believe both stations are supposed to be // at the time with ABC
local radio.

Carriers noted were 1503 weak, 675 decent but clearly too weak for
audio, 612 decent but beat up by local WTMJ slop, 594, and 558. I
suspect that I missed a few due to lack of time prior to fade out at my
sunrise about 1130 and spending some time on the two that were audible.

Big signals were noted from western Mexicans in that direction as is
common around SR, and especially if I note DU carriers. ie presumed and
unneeded Los Mochis on 650 was blasting in, etc.

These are the first non X band Aussies I have ever logged here in the
midwest !! I got three X banders from Barrington IL back in 1997 when the X
band
had very few stations in the US and I had no line noise to fight.

As has been observed previously there is a very clear difference in
reception from one end of the BOG to the other and aiming WSW clearly
favors WSW over aiming ENE and trying to work the same direction.
http://www.dxing.info/community/viewtopic.php?t=371 describes some detail
testing I did concerning the F/B ratio of unterminated BOG's

For example, day times, WHO 1040 is much better and very easy copy when
using the BOG to the WSW. Nebraska's KRVN 880 and KTIC 840 can be heard
weakly fighting distant powerline QRN. Des Moines on 1700 can be heard
weakly in SS, but when using the same wire to the ENE there is no trace
except a weak carrier.

[IRCA] New Broadband loop and CBC 1350 log

2007-09-09 Thread Walter Salmaniw
After a successful proof of concept of the corner fed broadband loop, I decided
to enlarge the present approximately E/W loop (actually closer to 334 degrees),
which I was able to accomplish, not without a bit of difficulty tonight. I
started by raising the vertical components almost 3 fold to approximately 50
feet, and the horizontal component was lengthened about 15 feet to about 40
feet. The dimensions aren't anywhere close to the 2 or 2.5 to 1 as suggested,
and my matching transformer for now is a 4:1 instead of a 16:1, but I just
wanted to get it up and running in time for tomorrow morning's TP dx session.
I looked at 2 frequencies only to compare and noted 738 (where I can see a
signal on the 313e to have increased from -115 to -105 dba gain of 10 db.
Not bad! 930 improved only modestly from -90 to -86 db. Of course there's no
improvement if the noise level increases the same amount. Tomorrow morning
should provide some answers hopefully. It wasn't fun gett!
ing up a very thick holly tree/bush to get to the altitude I wanted!

One log, by the way. At 8:00 pm I happened to be on 1350 and heard the CBC
news...only 2 40 watters listed here and they are in Keremeos (near Osoyoos)
and Bralorne, which is north of Vancouver in the coastal mountains. Both are
about 180 miles from here, so not a bad catch, I suppose. Patrick, have you
had any luck with the 40 watter CBC retranslators? ..Walt.

Re: [IRCA] Signal generators and "what if" dreaming

2007-09-09 Thread Patrick Martin
Charles,

First off I do not own the land my antennas run on. It is cow graising
land. I am fortunate to have permission over the past 26 years to use
the land. The land is under 3-4 feet of water in the Winter though. Your
trailer would need pontoons. hi.
I cannot find a model number on the Heathfit RF Signal Generator.
Bill Block built it back in the 60s and gave to me in 1972 before he
moved to San Diego. I have replaced the filters in it a time or two. I
have a 3 foot piece of wire running up to a metal curtain rod, 3 feet
across from the grid of the 12AX7. The coverage is about a mile or two
in each direction. I have used it as a pirate living on the hill in
Astoria in 1975 and the signal covered most of the city. It gets out
much better on FM than AM. It probably is not legal per se, the way I
have the antenna input set up, but who cares? I use it to adjust the
pots. It hasn't been used as a pirate in over 30 years. But it does a
great job.

Again, only a few moments at the dialsjust before 1300UT, then
again at 1325UT. Even with that small sample, it seemed better to
me at first glance than what Dennis and Walt reported. In general
these mornings, it seems there is a carrier on pretty much every 9
kHz channel, though some are pretty weak, but also some good strength
audio this morning.

Pretty darn good audio: 774, 828; though still with fades

Reasonable audio (though often battling w/splash) 594, 747, 972,
1566 ,1575

Not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise:
612 DU, 738DU, 873, 1134

Burbles in the splatter: 675 DU, 756 DU, 864 but a big carrier,
936, 963, 1053 (talk, not jammer), 1143, 1323, 1467

strong carrier, no audio: 855 hum, 1206 w/hum; 1287

I reported the change of a few LPRT's and the NRC log had the change a
couple years back. I notice in the new one 1350 is back listed at 40
