[IRCA] Alaskans
Lots of Alaskans are in tonight. I noted KYUK u/KFI, so I hooked up the phaser to get a Northerly lobe. KYUK is now dominant with Johnny River song "Tracks of my Tears" Both KNOM 780 & KICT-850 are good. Homer on 620 & 890. Re: [IRCA] LOOPS THROUGH AIRPORT SECURITY
Good Evening: Two years ago we traveled to London and Paris. Took along the DX-440 and a twin ferrite antenna with 50' of cable. On the return trip the DX-440 got packed in a carry on and a security person in Chicago told us that it should have been checked in with the luggage. Bought a nice letter opener in one of the castles in England, looked like a dagger and the letter opener got packed in a carry on. The x-ray machine in the Paris airport caught it and security told us it needs to be checked in with the luggage. Really surprised me how nice they were about it. Guess it happens a lot. I have travelled across Canada and into the US with a big camera bag bristling with electronics - I have never gotten more than a cursory scan of all the stuff and no odd looks or questions. I hate to say this but it is an odd blessing being a slowly graying slightly short of middle-aged dude... When I had Robert Plant rock-star hair in the late eighties it was a totally different deal - I would get randomly stopped walking through the more tony neighborhoods in Victoria (at night) with my tool and electronic laden "Jack Bauer" bag -- I mean, enough tools to tear down a small fighter jet... and yea, I went no where without it. [IRCA] HD Radio on QVC
Just watched the first 5 minutes of the HD Radio segment on QVC. Right now they're pitching the Radiosophy HD100 radio for $119 plus $8 shipping. The pitch sounds like it was taken directly off the Radiosophy web site - 80% of the market has HD radio, 1500 stations nationwide, no subscription fees, practically unlimited choices of formats, etc. etc. At least they didn't use the "high definition" words. And, what did they have playing on the radio to demo these great features? It was a "simulated" HD station that, at least while I watched, was all voice programming (i.e. fake traffic reports). The call letters of the station displayed on the radio were WQVC-1, -2 and -3. Their web site says they're now featuring the Polk I-Sonic. Get 'em while you can!! Re: [IRCA] IBOC busting receiver techniques
Colin, This might work on domestics at times. Yes, I can do much the same with the R8, but when it comes to a split is where the issue is, like KEX 1190 on 1179. Now that is tough to get by as the TPs are weaker and do not cover the amount of bandwidth a stronger US/CAN/MEX station would. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KAVT Reception Manager ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

[IRCA] IBOC busting receiver techniques
Made an interesting discovery last night. Receiver used: Eton E1 with balcony mounted 7' whip KGO 810 was running IBOC at 0500UTC - no surprise there. CKOR "EZ-Rock" 800 was completely buried with IBOC hash. I found by getting Sync lock on the LSB and adjusting the PBT on the ETon E1 to -.2 to .5 that the HASH completely vanished. CKOR was readily copied with very little hash present. I confirmed this by tuning to 820 and repeating the process on the USB and pushing the PBT to +.2 to +.5 I believe what is at work here is the PBT and not so much the Selectable sync lock. If you have a receiver with SYNC selectable and pass band tuning, give it a whirl... so to speak. Chant this with me: "What do we want? An IBOC free dial!" "When do we want it? Now!!!" -- Colin Newell - Editor/Creator www.coffeecrew.com | www.dxer.ca Web-Design / E-Commerce / Writing ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Hi Glenn --- valid questions... --- Glenn Hauser <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Joe, > > You tell us what it did not sound like, but not what > it did sound like. Please describe. This was new kind of jamming sound, unlike anything I've ever heard before, including Soviet block jamming from the 1960's. I'll keep one of my radios on tonight and see if I can capture this on tape. It's clear that the intent is jamming, just that it's a new sound unlike previous jamming sounds that I've heard. > On 1050 I should think you would be > hearing IBOC from WHO, on 720 > IBOC from WOR, and so on. Are you sure this was not > IBOC? Or are you making an > oblique point about that? No oblique point to be made. As you know IBOC emits this hiss. From my point in S. E. Michigan the only IBOC hiss I get is on 750 & 770 (WJR) 940 & 960 (WWJ) 900 & 920 (WFDF) and 690 & 710 (WLW). I am close enough to Toronto to hear CHUM on 1050 from time to time (including last night) but I clearly heard the same type of jamming under CHUM as I did on the other channels mentioned. Lastly, WHO is about 700 miles from here, so their IBOC hiss is not an issue here. WOR is about 550 miles and their IBOC is not an issue either. 73 de Joe Miller > > 73, Glenn Hauser > > Re: > Hi everyone, > > I had one of those where I woke up at 3, couldn't > get > back to sleep, so I listened to the radio for a > while. > > Heard definite jamming sounds, not the bubble type > frequently used by Cuba, nor the firedrake type used > by China, but jamming was very audible on the > following frequencies: 600, 640, 720, 890, 930, 970 > and to an extent on 1050. [IRCA] TP DX 9/26
A very interesting morning here. Several frequencies had a different mix. 648 & 684 both ad Filipinos on them, but both were not strong enough to ID. I sat on both off and on from 1345 to 1420. . But the more interesting channel was 765 with traces of what sounded like Indian Film music. I think there is an Indoesian there besides India, but I could never quite get it out of the mud. Tried for a // on some of the Indian Regionals and the music played was sinilar. The 765 station peaked about 1414, but never got strong enough tell much. There might have been a woman ancr, but hard to tell so sure. The channel was pretty much open with no interference or splatter, so I will check this again tomorrow. DXRR 1017 Daxao was alive and well dominating on most rechecks, plus presumed DZAR on 1026 with a preacher. Sounded like the same one as I heard a couple weeks back. DXEC 1062 was there above the HD hiss at 1410 too. Checked out 1314, but all I could muster there was JOUF. I fiqured since there were a few more Filipinos, I thought maybe one might show up there as it was heard up in the QC, but no luch. JOIF 1413 & JORF 1422 were both present. Pop music behind HLAZ, prob the Aussie. So, an interesting morning. I'll be checking out 765 abit more tomorrow.
