Not a trace here. For some reason I can't null local XEXX as well as I used
to. Odds would be better if I drove a few miles north. Actually the Kiwa
is picking up tons of electrical noise tonight.

I unplugged the Kiwa and finally logged KRML on 1410, with distinctive jazz
format // their online stream. This is my second newie in about 2 weeks,
the other being KWNA-1400. If you don't count talking houses, new stations
coming on the air, and DX tests, it is a very rare event for me to log 2 new
catches in a month.

[IRCA] WIGG a No-show in Madison WI

2007-11-04 Thread DXERak
Listened from 0400-0530 ELT, 0300-0430 CST (the last half hour just in case
the test ended up going off at its originally scheduled time). Nothing heard
that resembled the programming scheduled for this test. I was hoping that I
had a good chance at this one, since 5kw ND at approx 850 miles on a
relatively open frequency here would seem to be very favorable circumstances.
WOC and
WVJS dominated the frequency at times, but mostly it was wide open. I do
note that no one reported hearing this test on either the NRC or the IRCA
listservs-- highly unusual, considering how alive these lists usually are
during
successful tests.

When conditions are changing, it often seems that is when unusual
catches pop up. So some of our "weak carriers" could well have been
your interesting DX, John, but unless we're into "minimalist DXing",
using accurate frequency measurement and direction finding on those
carriers, we'll never know what we missed, hi.

It would be interesting to know if the signal strengths at sunrise
were generally down on some of the more normal signals, even at your
location. (Other than Harbin on 837 (not normal here by the way)
which you mentioned as huge). Were the Korean on 891 or the Chinese
on 1017, which I'd guess are normal for you, generally at the same
level as other mornings, for example, or did they fade up for a
shorter time and with less overall strength?

Certainly, the propagation monitor showed a suppressed morning here,
at least at sunrise, with only a short enhancement from generally low
signal levels.

Nick

[IRCA] WIGG DX Test

I was happy to hear that the test did happen last
night. Unfortunately, I did not last that long, as I
fell asleep and woke up twice while waiting for the
test to start, and finally went to bed about an hour

My gratitude goes out to the WIGG Chief Engineer and
to Jim Pogue for arranging this test. Mississippi
would have looked very nice in my log book, but
hopefully, we will have another opportunity again.

Just got through the 1 hour recording; WHK-OH dominated but, at times, the
channel was more like a graveyard. Heard a gospel station under WHK most of
the time but also caught bits of oldies and standards.
At 0927 UTC I heard a tone for ~ 10 seconds, and *maybe* two characters of
morse code a minute later. The code could have been part of the music, but
the tone was pretty distinct.

at 1435, 612 has faded up to the best audio of the morning, meaning
mildly readable, DU of course.

If I were you, I'd seriously consider overwriting it with XP. While
Vista shouldn't have had anything to do with your difficulty with that
link, it shure could cause problems with audio files, as it has some of
the DRM/RIAA protections built in so that some files simply won't play
because they're protected with a digital key.

So far, I've found there may have been two Gospel stations. The station
heard here with Gospel between 0430 and 0500 ID'ed at 0430 as WVOT-NC,
last heard by me in North Jersey 30 years ago ! At 0400 there was
something also Gospel but much more traditional. Just prior to 0430
there sounded like some "Boy Band" stuff.

No sign of WIGG here - including what Brett noted. But just prior to
the WVOT ID there was some kind of an ad or promo from somebody which
features a rapid tone beeper which could easily be mistaken for code in
the mud.

Semi-local WCOJ was a bit of a problem here as it's at about 260
degrees from here and MS is about 230 or so.

[IRCA] TPs Nov 4: Ugly!

2007-11-04 Thread John H. Bryant
Was up early, again and the first run at 1300 (2 hours before dawn)
was VERY promising and actually better than the early run
yesterday. Had useable audio from China on 639, 756, 918, 963, 1017
and 1377. Those were joined by Vietnam 675, Japan 747 and 774, Korea
1188 and the usuals on 1566 and 1575. I was quite hopeful for a
decent Chinese morning ...

Instead, things really went in the toilet at dawn everything was
either gone completely or fairly weak hets and nothing much had risen
to take their places. The only useable audio at dawn was: 774, 819
(distorted), 873 Korea and 918 Shandong. Those four were quite poor,
but I could ID the language, at least.

Have we had a solar event? Is Nick's cloud back and nearly solid? I
even had time this morning to knock out my last pending reception
report the first time that I've totally caught up with my report
writing since mid-September. That is not a good thing!

According to my Japanese DXer friends, North Korea is not on that

I'll second that. Vista is not a good operating system. I'd put XP Pro on
it. The DRM/RIAA intrusions are something that should never have been
allowed. FWIW, Vista sales are dropping and not increasing. That should
say a lot.

I have made it perfectly clear to my clients that I will not support or even
work on a Vista-equipped computer. There are driver issues and other things
that may not be able to be resolved. I don't want to be the Don Quixote
tilting against that insidious windmill.

If you check with your computer vendor, they may have a program in place to
give you Windows XP Pro at little or no cost.

How recent is the Japanese DXers' listening, Bill?

Certainly, there was a powerful North Korean there when I visited
Japan in spring 2005 //2850. It used to give fits to the big
Kumamoto NHK2 transmitter even in southern Kyushu.

I've logged it here at home, though not this fall; last heard March

Nick, I am checking this out now with my Japanese DXer friend who
happens to speak Korean. I think that maybe the Japanese DXers may not
fully aware of this station because the North Korean broadcasting
authorities are publishing lists of stations that exclude this one and
the NHK station on 873 may be blocking the North Korean to the extent
that they do not give it a second thought. Please stand by while I
receive an answer from my Japanese DXer friend.

Bill Harms wrote:

John, I am curious about the Korean on 873. do you have a clip of it?

Bill, I confess that I pretty much blow the Koreans off I have
difficulty recognizing the language unless I can hear it well and I
speak not a word (both my fault, of course) and most importantly to
me, neither KBS domestics nor the North Koreans seem to QSL. I'm too
QSL oriented and obviously need to DX some with you to learn about
the finer points of DXing Korea. I've pretty much been list logging
the Korean on 873. That has been quite prominent this season, but not
in the past.

However, Guy Atkins logging from our QCI DXpedition is pretty
definitive. To quote:

873 NORTH KOREA KCBS Sinuiju, Sep 22 1355 - Korean Orchestral
music, very strong and parallel to 2850. 3+1 Time Pips and ID exactly
as per PAL 'Choson Chungang Bangsong imnida' at 1400. (Atkins-QCI)

I wonder if KCBS have reactivated sometime this summer and the
Japanese are just operating on old information??? They do have NHK2
Kumamoto in Kyushu to contend with.

Look forward to meeting you one of these days, Bill We can regale
each other with stories of Americans stumbling their way through East Asia :>)

[IRCA] KOHI 1600 KVRI

2007-11-04 Thread vroomski

Good Day:

Listening to a replay of KOHI's hour talk show from Friday morning, host Marty
Rowe said that he is working with KVRI on the interference problems they are
having in KOHI listening area. Listeners have been complaining that a station
in a foreign language is interfering with their reception of KOHI in the
morning and evening.

Marty said that one of KVRI 11 antennas is not working properly. KVRI is
working on the problem antenna. 11 antennas? Checked the FCC data base and
found that they are using 6 antennas for day and night patterns.

KOHI is 180 degrees South of Blaine at 216 miles. The deepest null on KRVI
antenna pattern is 180 degrees South.

Marty also mentioned that they still working on their antenna problems.

[IRCA] North Koreans on 873 and 882

2007-11-04 Thread Bill Harms
Okay, the WRTH and sources are wrong. There are North Koreans on 873 and
882.

I received this from Toru Yamashita in Japan.

 > Wonsan is now on 882kHz, and 873 is from Sinuiju.

 > Wonsan can be heard under Daejeon MBC.

I sent this to Bruce Portzer last year and the PAL is correct.

Re: [IRCA] Korean on 873

2007-11-04 Thread Bill Harms
John:

If the truth be known, we all do list logging, especially if it is a
stations we have heard numerous times and when the action is fast and
heavy. I sometimes wonder if on occasion we miss something new, perhaps
even a new station by jumping over stations like that. I am into
recording local IDs and that makes up for list logging, I think.

QSLing the Koreans on both sides is problematic. In South Korea, many of
the MBC stations have printed QSLs (except Seoul!). The CBS and the FEBC
stations also have their own QSLs. The KBS stations are problematic. It
is personnel dependent. I have had better luck with Korean reports than
with English reports. They also like you to log local or regional
programming.

I will be in Spokane in April! That is the closet I will get to the San
Juans or Grayland in a while.

[IRCA] WIGG-1420 DX test

2007-11-04 Thread amdxmail

Heard with code, test tone, many Floyd Cramer tunes and one voice ID.? Rather
weak for 5kw n-d; WHK and WVJS, the usual top dogs on 1420, were in control
nearly all the time.? Heard March 26, 1971 (on a frequency check, I think) and
happy to hear it again.

[IRCA] WIGG 1420 test reprot

2007-11-04 Thread Bill Harms
I just finished listening to my recording of the DX test last night 11/4
for WIGG 1420. I nulled WHK but it was still rather strong. The number
two station was WVOT with gospel music. I am not sure I actually heard
the test. I did hear some test tones and what could have passed for
Morse code IDs. However, the audio was muddled. I may send a tentative
report anyway.

[IRCA] WIGG DX Test NOT Heard Here

Haven't listened to the entire recorded hour yet, but I'd guess this

The test from Georgia on this channel was heard several years ago, so

[IRCA] more on TP conditions Nov 4

2007-11-04 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
Finally got to look at the propagation monitor records for last
night, and although this morning's sunrise enhancement wasn't, there
were actually quite good signal levels overnight, comparable to other
nights in the past week. This was in contrast to November 3rd when
signal levels were suppressed overnight as well.

So the big "cloud of absorption" waited until people got out of bed
on the west coast.

Will be interesting to see if this is the end of the morning
enhancements, or just a passing phase.

best wishes,

Re: [IRCA] KOHI 1600 KVRI

2007-11-04 Thread WALTER SALMANIW
I've driven by KVRI a few times.  It's very close to Semiahmoo near Blaine, and
is in a presumably salty marsh facing north across to White Rock in B.C.  The
target audience really must be pretty exclusively in the lower Mainland of B.C.
which has a huge east Indian population.  A messy transmitter too, which
splatters over a large hunk of bandwidth.  Often pretty overmodulated
tooWalt.

Re: [IRCA] KOHI 1600 KVRI

2007-11-04 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
Guys:

Just because the technical data on radio-locator.com, fccinfo.comk or
fcc.gov shows 6 towers in the pattern itself, doesn't mean that's all there
is at the transmitter site.

KVRI has 2 directional pattern, the night pattern being a bit looser then
the day pattern. With 2 different patterns being needed, it's likely.. and
very possible that the night pattern can't be created by the same 6 towers
that the day pattern uses. While KVRIs day and night pattern comefrom the
samepieceof property, I wouldn't doubt that there's 11 towers up there
spread out to meet the pattern requirements.

The Day and night patterns may have some towers in common, might not. When
they switch to the night pattern, they may only use 1 of the day towers and
include 5 other towers only used at night.

KVRI is owned by Way Broadcasting, Inc aka Multicultural Radio Broadcasting
and the station is targetting an ethic audience so I guess they'll do what
it takesto put up that many towers. Being on 1600Khz, the towers arent but
130 feet or so. even if they're guyed towers, it'd only require aobut 25 to
30 acresof land.. which ISN"T alot. And although it might be expensive,
itprobably palesin comparison to what tyhe station makes in an LMA and block
time fees.

I think Paul's correct.  Staples up here in Canada had XP ?Pro a few months
back for some pretty hefty change, and I know that Microsoft is not going to
allow a "free downgrade" to XPno way.  When I next buy a laptop, I'm
purchasing mine from Dell that still offers a choice of Vista or XP, and I know
which one I'll be going with.

AsI said Jim, nothing here.. just some spanish station, a gospel station and
WHK.

Oh well, I was actually up and hoping for this, but no big loss that I
didn't hear it.

Thanks to Paul, their CE for staying up so late to do this. They've got a
nice little station in Wiggins that I heard for several days when camping in

There's a point that I make every time this question comes up, and it's
worth making again:

It's VERY important to understand what the FCC's database is, and is
not, supposed to be.

Anything on the FCC database that's outside the US is there for one
reason and one reason only: because it's entitled to protection from
interference from US-licensed stations.

It matters not one bit whether the international station record is
"accurate" in the sense that we as DXers would like it to be (correct
call letters, for instance, or even on-air status). As long as Canada
reports to the US that there's a station on 1190 in Charlottetown, PEI,
for instance, US stations are required by international treaty to
protect that "station" - never mind that it migrated to 720 two decades
ago and then to FM a couple of years back.

Nor does the FCC care whether 1150 in Hamilton, ON appears in its
records as "CKMO" or "CKOC" or "PAUL ESTHER BLODGETT WALKER" - as long
as the technical record correctly reflects the station's parameters as
reported to the FCC by Industry Canada, that's all that matters.

That's why the FCC won't accept "corrections" to the list from DXers,
and it's also why web-based directories that treat the FCC data as
gospel for stations outside the US (I'm talking to YOU,
radio-locator.com!) are so untrustworthy for our purposes as DXers.

There are three sources I trust as gospel for Canadian stations: the
Industry Canada BASERAD database, which is unwieldy and not accessible
via a direct web interface; Barry McLarnon's list, which is based on the
BASERAD data and DXers' observations; and the NRC AM Log, which is also
based on a combination of BASERAD and DXers' notes.

As many - but probably not all - on the list know, I am the news editor
of yet another station-directory site. 10watts.com is not a free
site (it's really meant for broadcast industry professionals, but access
for DX club members is available for a discount rate of $44.95 a year),
but I and my colleagues there take pride in our level of accuracy. It's
a complete list of all US-licensed stations, checked directly with each
station on an annual basis for accuracy. It's NOT a complete list of
Canadian stations - just the big-market border ones - but those are
checked directly with the stations, too.

I'd be curious to see exactly wat the problem with ONE of the 11 antennas
is. I find it hard to believe one bad tower out of the 6 would cause this
much of a problem. The people complaining are probably on KOHI's unprotected
fringe coverage anyways.

WBET? There's a 1410 and 1460 in Brockton, MA but neither are WBET. However
I think 1460 used to be WBET.

No station has the WBET calls today.

It's possible, with just a few minutes of actual research in place of
random guesswork, to determine whether or not KVRI's six night towers
are the same six towers it uses during the day. They are, and the answer
is as close as fccinfo.com, where we find that the same six Antenna
Structure Registration numbers appear on the nighttime record for KVRI
as on the day record.

What's more, four of those towers are also used by sister station KARI
550, which was there first. (The KARI records at fccinfo.com don't
include ASR numbers, but the coordinates are the same as KVRI, the tower
heights match - 97.5 meters all around - and a look at the KVRI records
show that four of the ASR numbers are fairly old, while two more were
issued later on, when the two additional towers were added for the KVRI
diplex.)

I have no clue where the "11 towers" business came from.

If the KVRI array is in fact out of whack, that's not just a problem for
KOHI. Any RF that KVRI is sending south is going away from that
station's target listeners north of the border in the Vancouver market,
and it needs every watt it can get to hot those listeners up north.

The 1460 in Brockton changed to WBZB from WBET in the last week of November,
2006. That lasted only a few days until the WBZ legal department sent them
a nastygram. They went back to WBET intil mid-December, 2006 when they went
to the current WXBR call. As far as I know, all IDs that mentioned WBET
were updated to WXBR, so there should not have been any accidental WBET
mention by them.

It's a shame they changed calls. WBET was very well known.

Re: [IRCA] KOHI 1600 KVRI

2007-11-04 Thread VROOMSKI

KOHI fans,

I'm 12 miles Southeast of KOHI and the interfering station here is KOPT Eugene,
OR at 123 miles.
At one time the owners of KOPT were thinking of buying KOHI and shutting it
down. KRVI is
219 miles from here and is not a problem with KOHI's signal in the morning
here. The way Marty (owner) explain the problem was that listeners have
complained to him about KOHI coverage in Columbia county. He admits problems
with their own antenna and they are trying to fix the ground problem and find a
new site.

It would be nice to hear KOHI around 7 am without interference from a station
123 miles away, and the next few months it will be worse because sunrise will
be as late as 7:51 am until January 8th when the sun will rise earlier each
morning.

Marty also mentioned that KOHI web-site can only have 120 people log-on at one
time. Soon they will have band width for 1,000 people to log on at any given
time.

KVRI's big signal and salt-water propagation path make it tough to hear KOHI
and KOPT in Puget Sound, but the strange thing is how the FCC could allow
such a daytime QRM mess (assuming that KVRI's signal is going north as
planned). Driving from Olympia to Kelso on I-5, all 3 stations mix badly with
each
other. It seems like the FCC really dropped the ball, on this 1600 mess.

do get out well judging by repports here. I also had

Not sure yet who that is. I see the test was not as

I have been listenings to KOHI since the 60s here on the coast, and they
do not have the signal they used to have. It is much weaker than even a
couple years ago. There is something wrong with their signal. KOPT was
never an issue with KOHI during the day unless I phased KOHI. It was
dominant on most antennas. Even on the car radio, KOHI's signal was
weak, but alone on the frequency and I am about 60 miles from KOHI here.
If they ever get their signal back up where it is supposed to be, I
doubt KOPT or KVRI will be an issue in Columbia County. Some days it is
hard to even get KOHI QRM free. They are several DB weaker here.

Of course, not a peep on the west coast. What dominated that hour was KITI
Cenralia Chehalis, WA and even they weren't that great. A hodge podge of
cochannels in and out. Shows the limitations of remote recording. I had used
AM, which caused muddy audio (had a very narrow bandwidth). Should have
either used a wider bw or USB or LSB, I guess. No chance for anything making
it through this time. Thanks to all involved in making this happen!

Re: [IRCA] & Cuba 530

2007-11-04 Thread satya
Hi Nick:

Good going! There's so many TIS stations around me on 530 that Cuba would
probably never punch through.

Last year, on a barefoot Sony 7600GR no less, I heard a few "Radio
Progresso" IDs just after my local sunset on 900 khz; naturally it faded
before I could find my recorder...maybe if CKMO can be nulled you might
hear it as well?

2007-11-04 Thread Patrick Martin
Walt,

CX last night were terrible as well as tonight. The Eastern beverage
seems about useless. Pocatello ID with their loud Ranchero mx pretty
much wiped out any chances of hearing the test anyway. Pocatello cannot
be running 12 watts. Not with that signal. Their sister station on 1480
often runs high power too.

Thanks...it was Colin Newell who alerted me to it; others have heard
it in this part of the world, so on a good night, maybe you
also. The one I really think you might hear is the Turks and Caicos
station on that frequency. A very frequent and sometimes quite
strong visitor here.

CKMO can sometimes be phased out reasonably well, so another one to
add to the hunt list. Just have to find the time...

best wishes,

Nick
