[IRCA] 660 WLFJ Greenville, SC On Late... AGAIN????

2007-11-20 Thread Paul B. Walker, Jr.
I got an Instant Message at 3AM this morning from a friend in the immediate
Greenville area who said he was listening to Dave Ramsey on 660 WLFJ, and
that the signal was quite clean and clear.

In the year I've been in Abbeville, this makes.. the 4th or 5th time this
has happened.. that they've stayed on late. They are 50KW non Directional
Day and 10KW directional for critical hours.
Equipment issues are one thing, and happening once.. maybe even twice is
acceptable.

I think it's time for our friend Powell to make a phone call.. AGAIN!

[IRCA] TPs for 20 November

2007-11-20 Thread Nigel Pimblett
A very unscientific survey, as I haven't had a chance to do more than a
cursory scan of the band in the mornings this week, but the activity
seems considerably lower than it has been the last couple of mornings.
The big Japanese are only fair carriers, unlike audio I noted
yesterday. One oddity - there is a decent carrier (perhaps the
strongest on the band) on 1017, which is definitely not the norm.

[IRCA] Not TPs for 20 Nov

2007-11-20 Thread Nick Hall-Patch
This is going to be easychecked the band briefly around 1400, and
should have listened then, because it seemed worse by 1505UT.

Darn good audio, if briefly: not the remotest hope

Reasonable audio (though often battling w/splash) dream on

Not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise: none

Burbles in the splatter: 747, 828  (774 was in the hole at this time;
had recovered to this level by 1513 as I write this)

strong carrier, no audio: 1134

Nowit might recover...but think I'll go to work instead, hi..

I noted 1017 (Tonga) last night at 0630UTC significantly stronger
than usual for this (or any) time of the year.

Maybe the antenna engineer went out and replaced a bunch
of cables and hardware - When they first installed
their new transmitter and antenna in 1997, their signal was bigger
and better than 738 Tahiti - an almost nightly visitor for months.
Within the year their stellar signal had dropped into the ranks of
the occasional (for me) visitor.

[IRCA] Geomagnetic Storm

2007-11-20 Thread Russ Edmunds

Current value of the K index is 6. A major storm is in progress. The A
index, which is a composite index mirroring the K is currently at 4.
Typically it lags the K by 6 hours or more. If the K stays at 6 for any
significant length of time, we can anticipate values of A at 30+ to
follow.

Looks like LA DX'ing for the upcoming long weekend...

Re: [IRCA] Fwd: TP DX...with a Sony SRF-59 Walkman

2007-11-20 Thread cafe

Gary meant to say...

Hello All,

Intrigued by the recent postings about MW DXing with Sony Walkmans, I
went out and purchased a Sony SRF-59 for about $20 at a local store here in
Puyallup, WA. Although it has an analog design like I wanted, I certainly
didn't have much hope for its DX capability, since its very compact size, low
price, and included stereo FM circuitry (and headphones) made me think that
Sony
probably cut corners on the AM side. But I was greatly mistaken!

This little radio not only has good sensitivity (enough to pull in the
all the usual fringe stations in the daytime here), but decent selectivity
too. Not only can it receive KONA-610, CFAX-1070 and KDZR-1540 (all over 100
miles away), but it can split off CHMJ-730 quite well from KIRO-710, and get
KPQ-560 in the null of KVI-570 (tough for most portables to do). Another big
surprise was turning to the low end of the dial, and finding no image
reception of my locals... almost unbelievable for a $20 radio.

Because of its daytime performance, I couldn't wait to try it out at
night. Just after midnight here last night, I set the analog dial just to the
left of KXL-750, and immediately got a decent signal from JOIB-747, using
only the set's 1.5 ferrite bar antenna. Very surprised, I then set the dial
just to the left of CKBD-600, and was rewarded with a weak signal from JOAK-594
(although this was more challenging). Two other JA powerhouses on 774 and
828 cannot be heard easily here because of local slop, otherwise I think this
little radio would have a decent shot at them, too. If you are looking for a
little fun with a very inexpensive radio, consider giving it a try!

 73, Gary

Comments: Not bad for a little analog unit... 20$ in the U.S. - 29$ at the Sony
Store in Canada -
Just goes to show that you do not need to spend 400+ dollars for an Eton E1 to
enjoy the
rapture of Trans-Pacific DX.

Yes - but in order to do this you need to be prepared to
have somewhere to live... and in order to do that,
you need to shell out an extraordinary coin for some basic digs.

Anywhere other than the Pacific Northwest you can buy a decent

$200,000 on Vancouver Island won't buy you a Yield sign on

2007-11-20 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

Thanks to Colin for re-posting my mini-review of the Sony SRF-59
Walkman, an incredible overachiever for $20..00. The TP conditions certainly
were
not the best last night, so I am eager to see how this tiny analog DX radio
will perform when conditions really improve. Also, if there is sufficient
interest, I would be happy to do a comparison test of this surprising Walkman
against other BCB DX portables.

It wouldn't come up this afternoon, but the upgrades
are mostly for FM. But the radio does work well. I
need to get some more if the ones I have are dead.

Re: [IRCA] Geomagnetic Storm

2007-11-20 Thread k4ape

Current value of the K index is 6. A major storm is in progress. The A
index, which is a composite index mirroring the K is currently at 4.
Typically it lags the K by 6 hours or more. If the K stays at 6 for any
significant length of time, we can anticipate values of A at 30+ to
 follow.
Russ-
I do hope it is over by this week end. But on the up side the A and K, even
at 30 isn't the end of Dxing. It becomes a great time to look for those
stations that are within 100 to 300 miles that you haven't logged. It is a
good time for the grave yard channels.

2007-11-20 Thread Gil Stacy
Dr. Xin also comments on the AM sensitivity. He likes the SRF M-59, 83 and
M-35V for MW sensitivity. He attributes performance to Sony's proprietary
IC and Sony's secretiveness about it--like Coca Cola recipe. As far as
unmodified performance, the M-35V, performs the best, according to him.
It's also digital which facilitates dx id. The radio operates on 9 kHz or
10 kHz splits which are enabled by an easy procedure. CCRane rates it the
best performing pocket radio without internal speaker. Prices run from
$26-$42. Most of the current and recent Sony radio manuals can be found:

I think Roscoe could use another radio.

Re: [IRCA] am iboc

2007-11-20 Thread Craig Healy
Some interesting conversations recently...

First is with a salesman at the Best Buy auto radio department. I asked if
there was any call for HD Radios. Took him a minute to figure what I meant,
but after he understood his answer was no. It seems this specific Best Buy
has not sold even one of them. None were on display. It's a very busy
store in the corridor between Boston and Providence.

Similar conversation at two local Radio Shacks. No interest, didn't
remember any sold.

Chatting with a guy who works in a local sandwich shop. Early 20's and
would like to work in radio. He was well aware of what HD Radio was and
called it a scam. Bear in mind that he would like to ba an announcer and
has no technical interest at all. His quote was pretty much that radio
sounds fine now and why would he spend the money for something that will
give no improvement. My question to him was what he thought about HD Radio.
Nothing that would lead him in one direction or another. He was much more
negative about HD Radio than I would have expected, and also differentiated
it from HDTV for which he had praise.

There has been a fairly big deal made about the fact that Ford now offers a
dealer installed HD Radio. What they have ignored is the Ford Sync that is
standard in some Focus models, among others. This offers voice-controlled
iPod and other audio choices, but *no* HD Radio. This is a factory-equipped
option and not something the dealer has to do. Seems like Ford isn't really
behind HD Radio after all. Just tossing iBiquity a very small bone.

Local WPRO-630 has had the IBOC turned off for quite a while. And a couple
other local IBOC stations don't decode well at all, even in the city grade
coverage.

I don't see any big interest in IBOC developing for this holiday season.
Maybe even less than last year, if that's possible.

The Fat Lady is warming up in the wings, and she's in analog.

[IRCA] Cuba - 600

2007-11-20 Thread Craig Healy
I've had the SDR-14 at New Bedford, MA on the south coast for a few days.
Unfortunately, my internet connection was off from Friday afternoon until
this evening. Finally had a chance to listen again.

The antenna used is a 5 foot copper loop about 150' from the WNBH-1340
tower, set to null it. The null is roughly E-W and pulls down NYC and
Providence stations a lot. I had a notch filter in line, but it was
removed as it wasn't needed. With 1340 nulled by the loop, the signal level
is actually less than the 1420 station which is a mile away. Audio is sent
by a streaming encoder. The server software that comes with Spectravue
hasn't really worked yet. No clue why. But, the stream combined with
control by PCAnywhere has been a decent workaround.

Right now the SDR is tuned to 600 and Cuba owns the frequency. Can't even
hear anything under it.

I had a chance to tune through the band when I was there this morning around
8am. There are some odd static noise segments here and there through the
band. Quite obvious in the SDR visual display. About 10-15db above the
noise floor. Just as noticeable with the antenna outdoors away from the
building as it was indoors. It could be related to the 50kw FM there, even
with the two outboard 30MHz low pass filters.

At some point I'll set it to record some TOH segments for later review.

Re: [IRCA] Sony SRF-59 Review

2007-11-20 Thread D1028Gary
Hello J.D. Stevens and Others,

I haven't yet written any formal review of the Sony SRF-59 Walkman, but
I have offered to do so for Colin's excellent dxer.ca web site, and he has
expressed interest. This Walkman's sensitivity, selectivity and image-signal
rejection seem incredible, for a price of around $20.00. If anyone else is
interested in receiving a full review, please let me know, and I will send it
directly. Current planning is to compare its performance to the ICF-2010,
ICF-SW7600GR, and ICF-S5W.

Reception of TP signals last night really wasn't much of a challenge
with this radio, J.D. Anyone that can receive KOHI-1600 in Alabama has a much
greater accomplishment, in my opinion (hi).

RVC 530 was thundering in fairly well, though not quite at Colin's
