[IRCA] KOAL?

2007-12-15 Thread Pete Taylor
Someone is out of whack just below 750 giving KXL a growl. I suspect
KOAL. Nothing so far but unidentifiable talk programming and 888/800
phone #s. Noted 12/15 0015 PST occasionally equal with KXL but with
deep disappearing fades.

[IRCA] SRF-59 Redux, where the Kaito Failed

2007-12-15 Thread John Cereghin
I've been tracking an unidentified country station on 560 for the past
several nights. I first heard it last Tuesday on my new SFR-59,
mixing with WQAM in Miami with my local WFIL in Philadelphia nulled on
the SRF. But the country station was mixed in underneath. My shack
is finally coming together but I don't have my FRG-7 or my DX-150B
hooked up to my outside antennas yet so I'm basically running my Kaito
KA1103 barefoot, with my box loop and Select-A-Tenna right now.

Last night, I pulled out the SRF and tuned to 560 again and there was
my unid station, ending an ad string with ...also in Middlesboro on
US Route 25E...: then into Southern Gospel Music. The announcer had
a strong mountain accent. I didn't get the ID (didn't have time to
stay with it) but I strongly presume WMIK in Middlesboro KY, listed at
88 watts (!!!) at night. They were putting in a good-to-great signal
on the SRF with the other stations nulled out. I went to the Kaito
and the Select-A-Tenna to see if I could get it and I could barely
pull WMIK out of the mud. I think I had WMIK in the Kaito but nowhere
near as well as on the SRF.

I'm wondering how well the FRG-7 hooked up to my 200-foot longwire
would have done. I should have it on today in time for Radio St.
Helena Day, but tonight, I do want to put the SRF head to head with
the Frog on the wire. But last night's new station furthered the
legend of the SRF-59 in my mind!

[IRCA] New Pacific Asian Shortwave Log Online

2007-12-15 Thread Geralyn Hollerman
For anyone interested:
---
Updated Shortwave Pacific Asian Log Online

The latest database and pdf editions of Bruce Portzer's shortwave
Pacific
Asian Log are now online at www.radioheritage.net.

All the latest changes, new stations, new formats and much more.
Thousands of SW radio stations covering the entire Asian Pacific
region. Online search possibilities. Access remains complimentary
24/7 for worldwide users.

This is the most comprehensive listing freely available anywhere
online. Well over 23,000 data entries to make your listening easier.

Some shortwave countries are close to becoming extinct, with only one
entry each for places like Afghanistan, Antarctica, Bhutan, and
Nepal. Others have only two or three entries.

However, China has 865 current entries indicating that shortwave
broadcasting remains very healthy in this growing Asian powerhouse.

Whilst at www.radioheritage.net, read our new articles and stories as
well. Plenty of interest for everyone wanting to know all about radio
across the region.

The updated mediumwave database version is already online as well.
The New
Zealand @ A Glance AM database now contains 200+ stations and has
also been updated. The New Zealand Low Power FM Radio Guide is
updated daily.

Thanks for visiting www.radioheritage.net, home of the Radio Heritage
Foundation.

[IRCA] Total Recorder Question

2007-12-15 Thread Marc DeLorenzo
Dave,

My guess is that you probably entered a parameter incorrectly. As an example,
if, on Dec 14 at 2200 you wanted to begin recording on Dec 15 at 0355 but
entered Dec 14 at 0355 by mistake, the status of the job would probably be
expired because Dec 14 at 0355 was already in the past.

If you have some spare time, try scheduling several short recordings during the

2007-12-15 Thread John Callarman
I've had a gift certificate from Amazon since my birthday in June, and, with a
couple of books I thought I needed, I determined I'd check out the SRF-59. The
tuning will take a bit of getting used to ... even the slightest adjustment
could move the dial 50 to 100 kHz ... but the reception is amazing.

On FM, the little ear-bud headphones fill my head with lush stereo sounds,
making me even sadder that I've reached the age where nobody wants to niche
program to me anymore!

On AM, I'm tempted to kick-start a brand new SRF-59 only log. Probably won't,
because of all the other stuff I'm doing, but I might!

2007-12-15 Thread Les Rayburn
Willis,

TWR 800khz is currently NOT in my log for Central Alabama. I did hear them
on a number of occasions on business trips to Florida. If you hear them
coming in well at your location, please do alert me. This is the kind of
thing that I wish more folks would post on the NRC DX Tips service. I got
your
e-mail but not until nearly 1AM...just not near the computer. The DX Tips
list has the advantage of going to my cell phone.

Thanks for keeping all of us in the loop.

Thanks Gil. I try and be a help to those who want help, and don't help
 anyone who doesn't want it!

I have two QSL cards from 1963, for reception of TWR. I was in Texas at
 the
 time.
In 1967 and 68, I was down in that part of the world and listen to them
 nightly, with a protable radio

2007-12-15 Thread satya
Hi Dennis:

I managed to get up this morning as well. 693-JOAB was coming in pretty
well near Seattle here with old Carpenters music (which was weaker but
audible on 747 and 774) with TOH pips (3 short and 1 long) at 1500 UTC.
Other frequencies had decent hets but no audio.

I tried to get the SRF-59 to duplicate the 693 catch but didn't dare wake
the XYL to retrieve it. Better planning will help next time...or maybe
one SRF-59 for the shack and one for the night table?

Kevin,

I heard Karen Carpenter singing Merry Christmas Darling on JOUB 774 at 1445
ut.
My favorite song heard on JOUB was WhiterShade of Pale by Procol Harum.
Heard one morning after getting home from work, a little after 2:00AM. Just a
little fading of the
signal, which added to the song.

The SRF-59 is so inexpensive a person could have one in different locations
throughout the house. Take the SRF-59 out to the coast and away from strong
 locals, you'll hear TP stations.

[IRCA] SRF=59's Special Canadian Mission

2007-12-15 Thread D1028Gary
Recently five brave SRF-59 units were recruited from Amazon for a top-secret
mission: spread the SRF-59 boom into Canada, and provide our Canadian
friends with exciting DX fun in the cold winter months.

If you are a Canadian DXer and would like a free, new complimentary
SRF-59 radio to thrill you this winter, simply send an email off-list with
your
name and address, to the chief SRF-59 Promoting Culprit at the address above.
Although five SRF-59 units have volunteered for this exciting mission, the
Promoting Culprit may expand the program, if more requests are received.

This mission is being executed for the following objectives: To spread
the SRF-59 Boom into Canada, to provide exciting Ultralight DX to our
Canadian friends during a long winter, and to express a small measure of
appreciation to two very special Canadians for making the SRF-59 Boom possible.

Re: [IRCA] Amazon Lowers Prices on SRF-59 and SRF-M37V

2007-12-15 Thread D1028Gary
To Ed MacDonald, KR0I:

I am very happy to hear that you are ordering the SRF-59, and you can
rest assured that it will Zap your locals like a little Star Trek Phaser.

Here at my suburban location, all of the locals can be nulled down into
the noise, and the tiny SRF-59 has even pulled in other stations right on my
locals' frequencies at night (like it has done for Kevin, another WA state
DXer).

When you hear TA hets around sunset, Ed, go ahead and try to pull audio
out of them... the SRF-59 has received 3 TP stations for me. It's truly the
medium-wave equivalent to ham radio's thrilling QRP activity. Have fun this
winter!

2007-12-15 Thread Les Rayburn
Jim,

I recorded the test last night, and have the files here at work with me
today. Not hopeful, but when I get time I'll go through them all and see
what I might have caught.
My sincere thanks to KLAA, Jim, and the BTC for setting up this West Coast
test. Always grateful for the chance to put new ones in the log.

Prior the test (around 1AM Central) I was hearing the regulars WCCO in MN
and Radio Fabuloso. Both are nightly visitors here. I could null either,
but not both. I nulled WCCO before heading for bed, and let Total Recorder
do the rest. Fingers crossed!

Do you have the daily flag checked in the schedule dialog box? Also, make

Re: [IRCA] KLAA DX Test

2007-12-15 Thread Nigel Pimblett
Jim,
I tried for the test (well, in automated fashion), but have just
checked the tape, and no sign of KLAA here. Had nulled WCCO, but the
only station I was hearing was in Spanish. A little unusual as I'd have
expected CKKY to dominate. Regardless, thanks to all involved for
running the test.

editing the subject lines when they have 2 list names in it can really screw
up some peoples rules for seperate mail filters/folders.

[IRCA] Total Recorder Problem

2007-12-15 Thread David Hochfelder
Hi Russ and Marc,

That's a logical conclusion for you to reach, but I set up the
recording around 1 AM last night, and checked the date/time afterward.
So it's something else. I've experienced this problem before, and
even downloaded another copy from High Criteria and reinstalled it.
So maybe it's something I'm still not getting.

Thanks,

Dave

 Dave,

My guess is that you probably entered a parameter incorrectly. As an
example, if, on Dec 14 at 2200 you wanted to begin recording on Dec
15 at 0355 but entered Dec 14 at 0355 by mistake, the status of the
job would probably be expired because Dec 14 at 0355 was already in
 the past.

If you have some spare time, try scheduling several short recordings
during the day. When you get it working properly, you'll love it!

Marc is almost certainly right. You probably set up the schedules on
12/14 and failed to re-set the defaulted 12/14 date to 12/15. I've done
that a few times.

[IRCA] The Lean Mean Ultralight DXing Machine, Part II

2007-12-15 Thread Joe Miller, KJ8O
Thinking in terms of the ARRL Field Day, and the worst
conditions that I could impose on the SRF-59, I took
my unit to the Great Lakes Crossing Mall, one of the
largest shopping malls in the Metro Detroit area.

Predictably, I was getting too much QRN to hear any MW
stations, even the strong locals such as WJR and WWJ.

Switching over to the FM band was another story
entirely. Very first station heard was low power WBFH,
88.1, Bloomfield Hills, running 360 watts from a
distance of about 7 miles. The major stations posed no
problems from inside the building, to which I then
tuned to 97.1 WXYT-FM where I was able to enjoy the
Detroit Red Wings Florida Panthers hockey game while
my wife was shopping.

Hi Patrick and Nick,

Thanks to Nick's 774 NHK2 Barreling In post at 0739 UTC, I checked
the band around 0830, and found not only 774 but also 747 with decent audio.
972 soon followed. With one of the new Ultralight contestants for the 2008
Shootout, the cigarette lighter-sized Sangean DT-180V, I tried hard to pull
audio out of the strong carriers, but the tiny thing just didn't have the
chance to seal the deal. The SRF-59 has shown the ability to log
medium-strong
TP's like last night's levels, but this extremely tiny Sangean competitor may
need more Japanese RF horsepower to get it done. Anyway, its 9 kHz split
capability (and 5 memories)gives you hope of success, even if it doesn't make
any contacts, hi.

[IRCA] The Lean Mean Ultralight DXing Machine, Part III

2007-12-15 Thread Joe Miller, KJ8O
More neat stuff to do with your SRF-59.

Unless you're out shopping, jogging, or laying in bed,
headphones are all too frequently not fun to use.

I have a Realistic SP-150 Communications speaker that
is rated for 8 ohms, 2 watts of input power. Of
course, it uses the 1/4 jack, but I made a patch cord
to convert from 1/4 to 1/8, plugged it into the
SRF-59 and voila, I have sound. Another alternative
would be to cut off the old plug and wire the 1/8
size in it's place

A couple of cautions: The speaker is mono, so I'm not
sure if I'm picking up both channels or just one.
Also, don't expect ear-splitting volume.

Although I have a preference for the SP-150 (which
sometimes shows up on eBay) I would think that most
CB/Ham radio external speakers would also work just
well.

Just some more fuel for thought from a happy owner.

[IRCA] E-W paths opening up again

2007-12-15 Thread Saul Chernos
We've had a decent CHRB 1140 Alberta mixing with WRVA-VA.

Also from the west: MN 560, WI 580, IA 600, 1060 very strong Mexico City
(though no sign of Calgary). Winnipeg 990 in but not as strong as it could
be. Not that this precludes further stuff...

Halifax earlier on 1140 was quite decent. Earlier had Boston on 1150 for a
new catch.

TAs: 1143 Croatia did quite well, Spain very weak on 999, Longwave Germany
183.

Looks like the A/K indices are dropping, hopefully that bodes well for the
1400 CA test tonight (I highly doubt I'd hear that one even under great cx
but I will try for it nevertheless) and 1210 AZ tomorrow night (I might have
a shot at that one).

Re: [IRCA] OFFLIST.....SRF=59's Special Canadian Mission

2007-12-15 Thread D1028Gary
Hello Paul,

I can see that we need to change the secret military code for
communications to Canada. With your intelligence-gathering skills, you would
be a
natural for the C.I.A., although they may give you some training on keeping
things secret, hi.

Anyway, no problem on your request, and the Chief SRF-59 Promoting
Culprit has already decided that you are deserving of a new SRF-59 Promotional
Unit, because our top-secret records indicate that your vote for the
Ultralight name was the deciding factor in the ultimate christening term for
this
thrilling new form of AM-DX. Accordingly, it is the desire of the Promoting
Culprit that you enjoy your new SRF-59 with full military honors, and the
sincere appreciation of all Ultralight Fanatics both here and (very shortly)
in
Canada.

Your question concerning headphones will not be discussed on this list,
but privately. There will be no further communication provided on this
matter, on the IRCA list. Really. Really. Really.

73, Chief SRF-59 Promoting Culprit

[IRCA] Ever so slightly off topic: who doesn't love CBC or NPR?

2007-12-15 Thread cafe

The power of radio was proven once again this morning
at 7AM local time on CBC British Columbia (Radio-1)

I was a guest on the show North by Northwest this
morning - a show that features eclectic music selections
and profiles of B.C artists.

Several MP3 streams are available here on http://www.twooldgoats.ca/
They are good for a chuckle - it is 6 minutes long and
features music and commentary from my debut music CD.

After getting up at 6AM to set-up a couple of recorders,
I listened to the show at 7AM and then fell back asleep.
When I woke up 1.5 hours later and checked my e-mail,
much to my surprise there was a small deluge of CD orders.

God bless radio.

I noted all of those (well, not the 580, where I have a local), and
also heard quite a few other western stations tonight: CBK-540,
CFFR-660, CKLQ-880, CJGX-940, KOMO-1000, and CKWX-1130, plus CW on
910 that is likely CKDQ.

So, much better than average conditions to the west, but with 160+
closer stations on 1400, I sure don't expect to hear KQMS!

first because they are much more tasty than those of us on the US side

[IRCA] KLAA DX Test

2007-12-15 Thread Phil Bytheway
I RADIOYourWay recorded 830.
At 0100, I had a couple of sweep tones but absolutely nothing else. Since
no one has reported any sweep tones, it must have been something local or
in the R-7 now KLAA.
Listened for the full hour and just heard WCCO.

Earlier (at midnight recording) I heard a Spanish station with Radio
Mexicana ID... who would that be.

Also heard some CW music off and on.

 Jim,
I tried for the test (well, in automated fashion), but have just
checked the tape, and no sign of KLAA here. Had nulled WCCO, but the
only station I was hearing was in Spanish. A little unusual as I'd have

expected CKKY to dominate. Regardless, thanks to all involved for
 running the test.

[IRCA] 800kHz PJB TRW Bonaire

2007-12-15 Thread W. Curt Deegan
I have an at times near local signal from 800kHz PJB TRW Bonaire,
Netherlands Antilles.

This is possibly not significant to others, but there were requests
on this forum to know when this happened.

I'll not post to DX Tips as was suggested by someone because the only
time I did, I was chastises for bothering people on their precious
cell phones, so hopefully more conventional notification will be
sufficient. If not, who cares.
